With some of the most stunning coastlines in Europe and mountainsides adorned with lemon groves, the Amalfi Coast is a hiker’s dream whatever the season. This special summer edition invites you to discover its magic in the warmer months, balancing outdoor activities with more chances to relax. We still hit the highlights, including the Path of the Gods, Pompeii and Sorrento, but with extra chances to unwind, including leisurely beach time in Conca dei Marini and a blissful sea swim in the coastal town of Atrani.

Enjoy a warm welcome from our local hosts, the Acampora family, who run our base for the week: Hotel Due Torri. If you have time, you may want to get out and explore the village, Bomerano, a quaint retreat high up in the hills and away from the often-busy Amalfi Coast below. Once everyone’s ready, we enjoy a welcome briefing at the hotel – a great chance to get to know the group a little, meet our leader and ask any questions you may have.

Please note: It is possible the order of the itinerary will be changed to ensure the best possible conditions for each activity during the trip. All listed activities and services will be included. Your leader will inform you of any changes locally after assessing conditions.

Our walk starts in Ravello, a town favoured by the Bloomsbury Set and other artists and intellectuals due to its secluded location and inspirational scenery. Before setting off for the walk, we have free time to explore the town and visit Villa Cimbrone or Villa Rufolo with their meticulously landscaped gardens and breathtaking sea views (optional). The route today is mostly downhill but does include a considerable number of steps. After descending across the Dragon Valley, we follow a stream until reaching the coastal village of Atrani for a refreshing dip before ending the walk in Amalfi.

Today, we enjoy an easy-going walk to Bagni della Regina Giovanna. This beautiful natural pool is a wonderful place for a scenic swim, but it’s also home to the ruins of Villa Pollio, a Roman home from the first century BCE.

After our relaxing morning, enjoy free time to explore the delights of Sorrento.

Transfer to the slopes of Vesuvius to view the volcanic crater, which also overlooks the beautiful Bay of Naples, the waters of which span between Naples, the regional capital, and Sorrento, the town famed for lemon groves. Depending on weather conditions, we will join an expert volcanologist on an extended walk around the caldera and beyond.

After lunch, we travel by bus to Pompeii. On the lower foothills of the volcano dominating the Gulf, Pompeii was a thriving port town until Vesuvius catastrophically erupted over two days in 79 CE and the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for 1,700 years, it is now a Unesco World Heritage site, the perfectly preserved remains providing an amazing insight into life in a Roman city, complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes – some of which still have walls adorned with detailed frescoes. We will explore the site this afternoon accompanied by a local guide.

Leaving the hotel, we have a short stroll through Bomerano before we join the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), one of the finest walking trails on the planet. It follows rolling hills, the contours of the land and the coast, providing highly evocative views as we go – ragged cliffs speckled with tiny villages and extensive vistas over the sparkling Mediterranean. The trail is broken by insights into local life, passing shepherd huts and ancient houses carved into the limestone. We can admire Positano from the last viewpoint before returning to Bomerano, where we are transferred to Conca Dei Marini (30 minutes) by private bus. The afternoon is free to relax in this idyllic bay, which is quieter than most on the Amalfi Coast and away from the usual tourist crowds.

Please note: Some parts of the trail today are rocky and there are frequent ups and downs, which can be a little hard on the knees. With breaks for water and snacks, this hike is of Activity Level 3 (Moderate) difficulty but doable for all those in good fitness. The challenge will no doubt be repaid by the magnificent views.

Enjoy a day at leisure to relax at the hotel or go to the seafront. The hotel also offers a range of private transfers to some of the most popular attractions in the region. Options include visiting Herculaneum, which was also destroyed during the Vesuvius eruption. The city was buried in mud rather than ash; some say this led to the site being even better preserved than the bigger Pompeii. You might instead choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri and the funicular through lemon groves up to Capri town. Furthermore, Sorrento or the National Archaeological Museum of Naples are also possible.

Please note, all these optional excursions are subject to availability and payable locally (activity prices are dependent on the number of people joining). The tour leader will assist you with bookings and arrangements. Alternatively, spend the day by the pool or in true Italian style in a cafe, sipping espresso and watching the world pass.

Leaving the Agerola Plain, we descend by private bus to Amalfi, the oldest maritime republic in Italy. Quintessentially Mediterranean, Amalfi is a cluster of little white houses, buildings and shady porticoes, dominated by a large cathedral with brightly coloured tiles typical of the region. We wander through hidden narrow alleys and sun-filled piazzas, before continuing by fast boat (approximately 20 minutes) to Positano.

En route, we enjoy enchanting views of sheer cliffs and rugged shoreline dotted with small beaches. There is no better way of approaching Positano than from the sea – the contrast of this colourful, near-vertical town against the verdant cliffs and blue waters will leave you mesmerised. We have a few hours to explore this chic, picture-perfect village on foot before we return to our hotel in the late afternoon by boat and private bus.

This morning marks our last breakfast at the hotel, which may feel more like a second home by now. If your flight leaves later this evening, you’re welcome to make use of the hotel facilities after check-out and enjoy an optional lunch here.

Hotel Due Torri, a family-run three-star albergo in Bomerano

We spend seven nights at Hotel Due Torri, a mid-sized hotel run by the welcoming Acampora family, who turn out authentic Campanian dishes in the restaurant and put on a show with their fun pizza-making demonstrations.

It sits in Bomerano, a peaceful village that forms part of the Agerola municipality, up in the hills and away from the often-bustling Amalfi Coast.

Being higher up, the hotel benefits from cooler nights, although beaches are not too far away. There is a small heated outdoor pool (usually open from mid-April to mid-October) and energy is generated by a solar panel system.

The 41 rooms vary in style and size and are spread across two main buildings and two cosy apartments a short walk from the main hotel. A limited number of upgraded rooms, which include a jacuzzi style bathtub, power shower and fridge, are also available for a supplement payable before departure. Please ask your sales representative for further information.

Duration of walks: Usually between three and six hours including lunch stops. While our expert leaders will ensure the walking pace allows time to rest and enjoy the views, being in good health and fitness is essential to fully enjoy the walking experiences.
Terrain and path type: These will vary from paved tracks to forest trails. Some sections involve long staircases, steps, some steep climbs and descents on slightly loose terrain. There will also be some narrow pathways alongside sheer drops, so you’ll need to be comfortable with heights. The walk on Mount Vesuvius is on rocky cinder/gravel trails and likely to be loose underfoot, with steep sections and some large drops. On most days there are considerable sections of steps (more than 1,500), so the walks are best suited to those not suffering from knee and joint problems. The maximum altitude is 3,638ft (1,109m), with an average altitude of 1,970ft (600m).
Climate: The Amalfi Coast and its surroundings normally benefit from a relatively mild and sunny climate, but heatwaves and heavy rains are frequent during the summer.
Fitness levels: Considering all the above, we recommend you arrive physically prepared to tackle slightly challenging routes by exercising regularly before the trip. You should also bring suitable equipment with you, including sturdy hiking boots and walking poles, and stay hydrated at all times.

Please note, there is high demand for our Amalfi tours, so it’s likely there will be more than one Exodus group at Due Torri. The hotel is also occasionally open to non-Exodus guests. Nevertheless, our experienced team of leaders is used to this and will tailor itineraries to ensure you enjoy each activity with your own small group. Any additional groups are either on a different tour or follow an alternative itinerary. The order of each groups itinerary may be changed to ensure the best possible conditions for each activity.

Also know that during the high season, usually May to September, popular towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano, Amalfi itself and the island of Capri, can be busy.

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately a one-hour drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:

Take an Exodus transfer

Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves.
Additionally, there are two more shared airport transfers to Hotel Due Torri, which can be booked for an extra cost (about €42 per person). Speak to your sales representative for the times and prices of these two shared transfers.

Make your own way

It’s possible to reach the start hotel by public transport, but the journey is complicated. We therefore recommend joining the group transfer where possible. If not, contact your sales representative prior departure to arrange a private pick-up on arrival. This costs between €80 and €160 depending on the number of people sharing the vehicle. For more information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.

Catching your return flight

There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales consultant if you wish to join.

If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales consultant to arrange an alternative transfer.

There are no required vaccinations. However, ticks are known to be present in this region and can carry Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis and other diseases. Please take care to protect yourself. You can read more about ticks here.

Breakfast is continental style with a choice of cereals, bread, eggs, ham, cheese, fruits, pastries, yoghurt, orange juice and milk, plus an array of teas/coffee.

Included packed lunches usually consist of a sandwich filled with a choice of cold meats, tuna, or local cheeses.

All evening meals are taken in the hotel, where the standard is excellent and the chef takes great pride in showcasing the best of regional foods, including dishes such as scialatielli all’amalfitana (homemade pasta with seafood) and branzino all’acqua pazza (sea bass in crazy water). Dinners usually consist of four courses, commencing with antipasti, followed by soup and/or pasta, a main meat dish with salad or vegetables, and dessert.

On certain evenings, there is the opportunity to learn how to make Neapolitan pizza. Please note, drinks are not included with meals but available to purchase.

Several dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free, are also well catered for. Please advise us of any dietary requirement on booking.

Southern Italy, like much of the Mediterranean, has a hot, dry climate in summer and cooler but sometimes wet spring and autumn periods. Unseasonable cold spells and rain are possible at any time of year, so we recommend bringing some warm clothes, especially useful in Bomerano where evening temperatures can be lower than expected. However, summer can be very hot with daytime temperatures in July and August reaching up to 34C-37C (93F-99F) on the coast. Travellers should be prepared for periods of extreme weather.

Nothing that’s not in the notes but when in Bomerano before dinner go and sit outside Hotel Gentile or a cafe by the square and have a drink and see the real Italy. Also there are laundrettes that do service washes so you go home with clean clothes!
