“As adventure enthusiasts, the Polar regions are close to our hearts. If you’re the same, join our South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula: Penguin Safari trip. It visits the resting place of Sir Ernest Shackleton, abandoned whaling stations and iconic landing sites. The highlight, for me, however, is the chance to see tens of thousands of penguins in the wild.”

An amazing experience. Awe inspiring.

Frances Attwood Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent (Ocean Explorer)

So many pinch me moments every single day… Penguins are just incredible to see waddling along their penguin highways, spectacular whale watching, stunning icebergs. I’d go again tomorrow! Loved the camping, paddling and polar plunge. Do it all! You won’t regret it. Fabulous trip, great bunch of people, delicious food.

Planning a Polar Expedition?

Wondering what to expect on a polar expedition? Read on for more details about what you can expect when you book a polar expedition through Exodus, operated by our sister company Quark Expeditions.

What is a polar expedition?

A polar expedition is an immersive small-ship adventure that takes you into some of the world’s most remote and spectacular environments. Travelling aboard an expedition ship, you’ll explore by Zodiac and on guided shore landings, where conditions allow, learning from experienced expedition staff through daily briefings and onboard presentations. Every voyage is shaped by the weather, sea ice and wildlife, making each expedition unique. Arctic and Antarctica expedition cruises combine expert-led exploration with unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Should I choose the Arctic or Antarctica?

Both polar regions offer extraordinary scenery and wildlife, but each provides a different experience. Antarctica is known for its vast icebergs, dramatic glaciers and iconic penguin colonies, while the Arctic is home to polar bears, walrus, whales and diverse landscapes, as well as communities with rich cultural heritage. The best choice depends on the wildlife, landscapes and experiences you’re hoping to enjoy.

What wildlife can I expect to see?

Wildlife varies depending on the destination, itinerary and time of year, but both Polar regions offer exceptional opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. In Antarctica, you may encounter penguins, seals, whales and a variety of seabirds, while Arctic expeditions can offer sightings of polar bears, walrus, whales, Arctic foxes and seabirds. As with all wildlife expeditions, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Do I need previous expedition experience?

No previous expedition experience is required. Polar expeditions are suitable for anyone with a sense of adventure and a reasonable level of mobility. You’ll need to be comfortable boarding Zodiacs and walking on uneven terrain during shore landings, and your expedition team will provide guidance and safety briefings throughout your journey.

When is the best time to visit the Polar regions?

The best time to visit depends on whether you’re travelling to the Arctic or Antarctica and what you’d most like to see. Antarctica expeditions operate during the austral summer (October to March), while Arctic voyages generally run from late spring to early autumn (May to September). Each season offers unique wildlife, landscapes and experiences, from penguin colonies and whales in Antarctica to polar bears, walrus and dramatic Arctic scenery. If you’re unsure which destination or departure is right for you, our polar experts are on hand to help you choose the expedition that best matches your interests.
