Overview

Head to Norway and hike trails surrounded by immense beauty, while also avoiding the tourist hotspots

The Norwegian fjords are one of the natural wonders of the world: a cinematic landscape of snow-capped mountains, steep green hillsides and powerful waterfalls plunging into calm, clear fjordic waters. Purposefully avoiding the tourist hotspots, we stay at a guesthouse in the fjords, providing easy access to some of the most picturesque walking trails in Norway. There’s also time to take a ferry through the sheer cliffs of Nærøyfjord (Narrow Fjord) and ride the Flåm railway, one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.

Begin your adventure in the picturesque coastal city of Bergen, deep in fjord land and wrapped by seven mighty mountains.

Around 4pm, say hallo to your tour leader and fellow travellers in the hotel lobby, where we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

This is also an excellent time to take your first fika, Scandinavia’s traditional coffee and snack break, with the free homemade pastries and freshly brewed tea and coffee available at the hotel.

After, we get our bearings with an orientation tour of the city, before your tour leader ensures a big Norwegian welcome by arranging a group dinner at the hotel.

Arriving in the village of Flåm, we jump back in the minibus and continue to Nes Gard, our hideaway in the fjords for the next five nights.

After a short transfer, embark on a picturesque walk to the top of Molden (3,360ft/1,116m), where we can marvel at the profound chasm that is Sognefjord, nicknamed the King of the Fjords.

Molden is often called the finest viewpoint in Sogn, with an amazing fjord view. With 1,970ft (600m) of elevation gain over 2.6mi (4.2km), the path is neither too steep nor strenuous.

Halfway, we stop at the mountain farm of Svarthiller, where we get the first scenic views of the fjord. After, we visit Urnes Stave Church, the oldest stave church in Norway and a World Heritage site.

After breakfast, we have an approximately 40-minute transfer to Jostedal National Park, the home of Jostedal glacier, a mammoth ice cap covering vast swathes of the park itself.

It has nearly 30 glacial arms and today we visit two, starting with a walk to the Nigards Glacier, where we get really close to the glacier. If you’d like to get even closer, you can join an optional guided walk on the glacier, using crampons and an ice axe to help you navigate.

After, drive to the Bergset Glacier, a mighty ice wall covering the upper part of Krundalen valley. Here, we have a short walk towards this glacier fall before we head back to Nes Gard.

Hike into Mørkridsdalen today, one of the most scenic valleys in Norway. The walk starts in a narrow canyon dominated by a waterfall. As we continue, the canyon opens into a wide valley of moorland with wildflowers and traditional Norwegian summer cottages.

After, we return to Nes Gard for another evening to enjoy our scenic location on the banks of the Lustrafjord.

Start the day with a one-hour transfer to the start point of today’s hike. The route (which takes three to four hours) is one of the most popular in the area and when we reach the top of Besshovden viewpoint, we see why. From the summit, enjoy majestic views of the Fjærlandsfjorden and Jostedal glacier. During summer, you may even see people securing hammocks here to spend the night under the stars.

Then take a short transfer to the Norwegian Glacier Museum in Fjærland, an angular slice of modern architecture backdropped by the ancient mountain peaks. Here, we can spend 1hr 30min enjoying a fascinating insight into the local landscape, the glaciers and how the climate crisis is impacting them.

After, enjoy free time in Fjærland, Norway’s book town, where old cow sheds and pig pens have been converted into book shops.

Please note: the order of this day may be reversed, depending on the weather.

Bid a fond farewell to our fjordic home and transfer (2hr 15min) to Flåm, where we ride the Flåm railway, one of the most beautiful and steep train journeys in the world. Our journey takes us to Myrdal railway station, where we get out and take a zig-zagging path back down. The car-free route is reserved for walkers, offering fantastic views of waterfalls and the valley.

After, we jump back on the railway, normally at Blomheller station, and return to Flåm, where we catch a transfer (1hr 15min) to our hotel in Voss. Arriving around 4pm, there’s free time to explore before our farewell dinner.

Begin our Norwegian adventure in the historic Bryggen district of Bergen. It’s in the perfect location to explore with the Fisketorget fish market, St Mary’s Church and Bergenhus Fortress all within walking distance. The hotel itself has modern rooms, a gym and sauna, plus free fika in the afternoon – fresh tea and coffee accompanied by homemade baked goods.

Lustrafjord: Nes Gard (nights 2-6)

Walking the Fjords

Enjoy five nights on the banks of Lustrafjord, staying in a welcoming private guesthouse. It’s situated on a family-run farm, now managed by seventh-generation custodian Anders, who ensures “good food and good experiences” to all who stay there. The 20 individually decorated rooms, some of which have sloping ceilings, are split across several farm buildings, a mix of double rooms with private facilities and two-bed apartments with shared facilities.

Voss: Fleischer’s Hotel (night 7)

Walking the Fjords

Ideally situated mid-way between Flåm and Bergen, Fleischer’s is a contemporary hotel with a historic atmosphere, housed in a 19th-century building by Lake Vangsvatnet. It includes a wellness area with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, solarium and gym, and the restaurant has one of the best wine lists in the region. A perfect hotel for a relaxed finish and a warm farewell to the fjords.

Norway

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Norway. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Seven breakfasts, seven packed lunches (made yourself from the breakfast buffet) and seven three-course dinners are included.

An evening meal at the hotel is included on the first night in Bergen and on the last night in Voss. At Nes Gard, the owner prepares excellent home-cooked food, often with fruit from their own farm. There is a strong focus on locally grown produce.

From June to September, Lustrafjord has about 15 days a month with some kind of precipitation. When the sun shines, temperatures are around 18C-22C (64F-72F). Expect some rainfall, even though warm and sunny weather is not infrequent in this area. Summer rain is also common.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

Awesome Fjord Experience

Amazing discovery of the fjords via hiking, cruise, ferry rides and mini-bus travel. The accommodations at Nes Gard and Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel added to the spectacular hiking. Views of the fjords and farm-to-table food was amazing at both Inns. Each day of hiking was a unique experience ; all of...

Most Inspirational Moment

Our most challenging hike on the 4th day with picnic lunch at Marifijora, a spectacular view of several fjords.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Flo, our leader, was a great guide. Friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating to all hikers.

Fjords

This trip was very good regarding place, people, guide, food and hikes. It was true to level 3 hiking.

Most Inspirational Moment

Glacier hike/trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Flo was GREAT. He truly made this trip what it was. Kind, patient. He was attentive to everyone’s needs, monitored everyone during hikes, knowledge of area was top notch. I can’t say enough good things about Flo as a guide/leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

DO THE glacier walk/hike if you go on this trip. Costs extra but DO IT. It is worth every penny - when will you get another chance possibly! The food AMAZING - much better than anticipated, 3 course meals at dinner. READ TRIP NOTES - the NES Gard facility DOES have shared bathrooms for single people even if you pay single supplement. Norway is a beautiful country worth visiting if you love nature. The hiking in my opinion was very doable - level 3 but lower level 3. The pace was not fast at all, everyone was able/capable on our tour. I would highly recommend this trip.

Majestic landscapes - superb itinerary - outstanding guides

One of the best Exodus tours we have done. Norway is staggeringly beautiful, and we experienced it in a way that is simply not possible from the deck of a cruise ship. All the walks are linear, but the landscape is so varied that it never seemed repetitive. The accommodation...

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say - Mt Molden, the glacier walk, the unpronounceable valley.....

Thoughts on Group Leader

Flo was outstanding. Always professional, caring, knowledgeable, and empathetic. He made a great trip an unforgettable one.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get ready for all weathers, and bring a pair of gloves, even in the summer. The walks are harder than they look on paper - some of the paths are seriously uneven, and need attention, particularly on damp descents. Bring poles!

Walking the ffjords

Fantastic week walking in beautiful Norway. Think I have fallen a little in love with the country and the people. Views were breathtaking. The itinerary was moved around to accommodate weather and later finishing. This worked well and we got a bonus trip to a local farm with an excellent...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Flo was first class. Very organised and worked hard to ensure we all got the best experience. Anders at Nes Gard went above and beyond in many ways including providing plasters for my blisters, and rustling up extra homemade bread. Both Flo and Anders made a huge effort to make us feel welcome.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Norway was not as expensive as I had feared. There are some long drives on this trip but the scenery definitely compensates. This trip is right at the top of my favourite Exodus holidays.

Great leader, great group, great trip

Anders and Flo provided a great support on this trip. Beautiful walks, breathtaking scenery, great accommodation throughout. Perfect balance between walking, sightseeing and down time.

Most Inspirational Moment

Glacier walk, hike to Molden with some amazing views of the Sognefjord, Stave church to name a few.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We couldn't wish for a better leader. Florian was very helpful, approachable, inspiring and knowledgeable. Nothing as ever too much trouble and he was a pleasure to talk to.

Advice for Potential Travellers

- take a few thin layers, as the weather may be changeable, even during the day. - enjoy the amazing fjords and embrace the cultural heritage of Norway

Amazing week walking in the very beautiful Norwegian Fjords

As a first time hiker I was worried about what to expect from this trip but I shouldn't have been. Spent a truly amazing week hiking varied and incredibly beautiful landscapes, interspersed with some breathtaking ferry trips. The pace was manageable (although I did start with a good base fitness)...

Most Inspirational Moment

There are too many to really mention but the two stand out moments were getting to the top of the mountain on the first day and looking down over the Fjord. The sun was shining and the water was an incredible turquoise. Our group had laughed and bonded all the way up the mountain and there was a huge sense of achievement at the top. The second was on the last day at the waterfall. We'd all spent an amazing week with each other and there was a poignancy that it was our last day together. The waterfall was magnificent and the scenery breathtaking- it was my favourite hike and it was sad that it was the last.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anders was a really fantastic group leader. He was knowledgable, kind, funny and you knew you were safe with him. He went above and beyond to spend time with the group, flex the schedule to take is to the bakers for cinnamon buns and overall look after us. He never pushed anyone to their limit and took time to understand the individual needs of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You do have to have a base level of fitness for this trip to really enjoy it. Some of the ascents would be tricky in the rain and the terrain is full of rocks so you also need to be steady on your feet. That said in out group there were 4 people over 70 who managed just fine and had a great time!

Stunning Norway Hiking

Nes Gard Farm, what “a little gem” of a place to stay for the week. The team, food and wine pairing option was truly amazing at this special place which was also surrounded by incredible scenery. The evening hike briefings for the following day took place either in the charming...

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip highlight for us was the glacier walk as we had not done one before, my partner only wished it was longer as it was such a fun experience to do. The photos on the Exodus website truly do not represent how stunning this country is with some extremely memorable hikes.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide Anders was a very good guide. He held an evening briefing every night before dinner. He used the briefing to get feedback about the hike of the day and if there were any problems. He then covered the details for the next hike, providing information about departure time, distance, terrain, weather and hike time length. The briefing allowed guests to ask questions and get sound advice on clothing, equipment and food/water to bring and on the last day offered an shorter route alternative during the hike for some of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We would recommend the glacier walk option in the itinerary if you have not done one before. There was a lot of boulders on some walks and so we would recommend bringing walking poles if you use them.

Suggestions

We were very lucky with the group, 14 of us from all corners of the world, a wide variation in ages with a good mix of solo and couples. Not forgetting our guide and wonderful owner of Nes Gard Farm, Anders. The group provided a-lot of laughter and fun along the way which proved extremely entertaining at times. We haven’t laughed as much as this in a very long time! Great first trip back with Exodus after Covid. The connection flight between Uk - Amsterdam and Norway outward and return was a little too tight for comfort and some running and panic did take place otherwise a very memorable holiday! Our baggage got lost coming home but hopefully still at Amsterdam and will be returned home to us very soon which was also not great but at least we got home! Thank you from Han and Lucy.
