The Primate Survival Project

Fighting primate extinction in Vietnam

A last chance for some of the rarest primates on Earth.

Deep in the misty forests of northern and central Vietnam, some of the world’s most endangered primates are clinging to survival. Creatures found nowhere else on Earth – like the Cao Vit gibbon, Cat Ba langur, Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, Grey-shanked douc monkey, and Delacour’s langur – are teetering on the brink of extinction.

Habitat loss, poaching, firewood collection, livestock grazing and the illegal wildlife trade have pushed them into smaller, fragmented patches of forest. Without urgent action, these extraordinary species may vanish within our lifetime.

What your support makes possible

In partnership with Fauna & Flora, the Primate Survival Project puts local communities at the heart of the solution.

Project timelines

1. In the first year, the project will focus on bringing more people into conservation – from forest-edge communities to trained rangers.

2. Local teams will carry out drone-based surveys to assess primate populations

3. Community members will be trained to track wildlife signs and monitor habitat change

4. Rangers and conservation staff will receive tailored training to boost the impact of forest protection and biodiversity monitoring

The Primate Survival Project

Later in the year, the focus will grow to include eco-tourism. Pilot experiences – like guided wildlife walks, forest treks, and conservation-themed village visits – will be designed to attract responsible travellers and give communities a financial reason to protect their environment.

This is conservation powered by people – and made stronger by travel that gives back.
