La Dolce Vita

This has been one of our best family holidays ever. The itinerary is perfectly balanced and accommodated all levels very well. Eduardo is a faultless guide and manages to blend the group together well. He is particularly adept at bringing the children out of themselves. The hotel in Bomerano is small enough to have a family friendly feel an yet has everything you could ask for. They go the extra mile with the children’s cooking nights. We extended our stay with a few days in Sorrento and a night in Naples which was well worth it and enabled us to consolidate our appreciation of the region.

Most Inspirational Moment

It is hard to pick off a highlight but the walk of the Gods was especially magic and Pompeii was memorable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo sets the right tone. All of the families were great and you could envisage being friends with them if they lived closer. However, I think Eduardo manages the ice breaking very well so that people mixed from the outset.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Extending our stay for a few days worked for us and is worth considering as the week will fly by. The crossing to Capri is 1 hour 20 minutes and quite a few people were sick. It was fine on the return journey as we all managed to get seats in the open air section. This made all the difference so if you are prone, make sure you are seated in the fresh air.

Tour of Mont Blanc - camping

This was a fantastic walk from start to finish, and I felt a great sense of achievement to have walked the whole route.

Most Inspirational Moment

Coming over the Grand Col Ferret from Switzerland to Italy after several days with very limited views due to low cloud, and seeing the Italian Val Ferret and all the peaks in dazzling sunshine. Reaching the end of the official circuit on the last afternoon at Plan Praz and deciding to continue alone to La Flegere where we had ascended 11 days earlier.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent leadership of the group, set starting times and kept to them, set manageable walking speeds. Good local knowledge of flora, mountain peaks, history and local land use / customs. Good fun to be with. He also allowed (and led) two optional extra climbs to viewpoints on cols which were excellent additions to the itinerary.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you really up to this. There are long ascents and steep descents. You need good knees.

Walking in Tuscany

Great food, accommodation, people, stunning area, challenging, well led walks, difficult to think of any negatives for this trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view of the coast from the top of the 'Dead Man's Stomach'.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Well organised and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

August in Tuscany can be wetter than you'd imagine, so don't stint on the waterproofs. It's also well worth making the journey to Lucca on the free day: a beautiful city.

Borneo Wildlife Explorer

This was a wildlife orientated journey and we were not disappointed as far as wildlife was concerned.
We spent very little time in cities and town but were mostly in the jungle. However, we stayed in nice resorts and comfort was not a problem.

Most Inspirational Moment

In reality, I didn't expect to see much wildlife but was pleasantly surprised when we came across a large herd of wild elephants on a river bank. (In addition we saw lots of different types of monkeys including the comical proboscis monkeys, different types of birds, crocodiles and snakes.)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was a local guide. His English was very good and he was knowledgeable about all aspects of his country. He was quite flexible and tweaked the itinerary when it was required.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a jungle expedition and so make sure that you have the right sort of gear like sensible boots. The temperature and humidity are very high and if you come in from Europe you do need to be careful and drink a lot of water. I would actually recommend that you bring packets of re hydrating salts.

Discover The Baltics

An enjoyable and informative trip. It was varied and there was a good balance between city, town and country. Each day had something of interest. The guides were excellent. The only real improvements I would suggest would be to lengthen the stay in Tallinn – a second day is definitely necessary – and to change the first hotel in Tallinn which was a disappointment. A little more walking in the National Parks would also be welcome.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were a number, particularly in the three capitals which were each fascinating for different reasons. The museums of occupation and genocide victims, whilst harrowing, are a must. Equally the restored Art Nouveau buildings in Riga are nothing short of amazing. Trakai castle is also stunning.

Thoughts on Group Leader

She was very good indeed. I thought she got the balance just right between looking after us and leaving us to our own devices. She was very caring and well informed, with a good breadth of knowledge, and her English was excellent.

Carpathian Mountains Rumania

This was a wonderful holiday in every respect, one that we will remember for many years. The scenery, location, food, company were all great. The villa and it’s hosts were superb – could not have been better. Nothing was too much trouble and they were so friendly and helpful.

It was fabulous to meet new people and share the experience with them – great fun and exhilarating.

Most Inspirational Moment

Great sense of achievement after the long walks with breath taking scenery. Loved the bear watching and walking through the gorge.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Very reassuring to have around and a great guy all round!

Advice for Potential Travellers

You DO need proper walking boots and waterproofs. Generally the weather is warm and sunny but with very heavy usually short lived rainfall in the afternoon/evening. Be prepared!

I want to do it all again!

I went to Borneo because I wanted to see Orang Utans in their natural environment, but I knew little else about the country. I saw Orang Utans in the rehabilitation centres and in the wild, but I also saw Sun Bears, dolphins, Macaque and Proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants – every day had a WOW moment. The jungle trekking was tough going at times but our excellent guides made sure they were still enjoyable treks, willingly sharing their knowledge and pointing out things of interest to our group. I learned so much about the local culture from visits to various centres, but also by chatting to our group leader Manuel. The accommodation was excellent and the transport provided was very safe. All activities were enjoyable and interesting – the camera was always in use! This holiday was intended to be a once in a life time trip, but now I want to go again. The holiday was everything I had hoped for and so much more.

Most Inspirational Moment

After completing the 9k Sepilok trail, we went for dinner at the Banana Restaurant. There was a board walk leading from our accommodation to the restaurant and by that time of evening, it was quite dark. I was sitting with my back to the rails above the water, when I realised that people were looking at me or beside me... I turned round to look straight at an Orang Utan sitting on the rails! I had never heard him arrive. Seemingly Boogle, for that was his name, was a naughty escapee from the nearby Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre and this was his habit - to visit the restaurant, get a baby's bottle of milk and some bananas, before returning to the Centre! He was very calm, as he was still being handled by humans at the centre and was happy for the diners to take photos. It's not often I have had an Orang Utan at my table in a restaurant! We were making our descent from a viewpoint at the beautiful Danum Valley when our guide directed our attention to the trees - not easy when you are watching where you are putting your feet in a trail made from exposed tree roots - but as I looked up, I saw a mother Orang Utan, with her baby clinging to her chest, swing through the trees. She came into the trees above my head and I could look into her eyes. If I had stretched up, I might have been able to have touched her, she was so close. She paused for a moment but sensing no threat from the spell-bound human travellers, happily continued on her journey. Just after our arrival at the Myne Resort on Kinabatangan River, the group went on a river trip. Our Guide Manuel had said that some elephants had been sighted grazing, so off we sped. As we turned a bend in the river, there was a whole herd of Pygmy Elephant - approximately 60 of them - grazing and bathing on the opposite bank. The boat was stopped on the river and we sat initially in silence and awe, gazing at these magnificent animals - then the cameras went into action! The guide and boat crew were happy to wait for as long as we wanted - there was no rush or urgency to move on to see something else - so we sat for almost an hour!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Manuel Gidiun and he was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the animal and plant life of Borneo and was always able to answer our queries. He also knew good places to eat, shop or the places of interest for sight-seeing. Manuel also helped us to deal with the practical issues e.g. where the nearest chemist could be found for those with tummy upsets or where to get laundry done cheaply - there is only so much that can be done in hotel basins! When any problems arose, he dealt with them immediately and effectively. We had a flight cancelled at the last minute due to weather problems, but we were not alarmed as Manuel immediately sorted out accommodation for us and made sure our boarding passes were ready for the next morning. He then re-arranged our remaining itinerary to ensure we did not miss out on the activities that had been planned. Manuel was a very sociable leader, remaining with the group at all times and sharing in our excitement and fun throughout the trip. He would tell us stories of growing up in Borneo, which added to the rich insights of the country. He was also a very organised team leader - every evening we had a briefing on the next day's activities - what clothes or footwear were advised, how much water we should take with us, whether we would be visiting places where we would spend money etc. - the little practical aspects which ensured we were able to enjoy all the activities. He was a team leader in whom we all had confidence and that reassured all of us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plenty of memory cards for the camera! When you think you have enough packed, then add a few more - I have never taken so many photographs and videos on a holiday as I did in Borneo. You don't need to pack fancy clothes - it is definitely a tee-shirt and trekking trousers holiday. Good trekking shoes/boots, trekking sandals and a pair of flip-flops. Some of the treks can be a bit tough - I never knew there were so many steep hills in the jungle! - but they are still worthwhile and very enjoyable as the guides will ensure you get plenty of rest and water stops . You are in very safe hands in Borneo.

Backroads of Sri Lanka[cycle]

As I am getting older these sort of adventure trips are more important to me than one can imagine because the time will come soon where I will act my age.Having started the trip on a disastrous note where I fell very ill on the plane trip to Sri Lanka.Combination of a virus and my medication[inappropriate medication for the trip/climate]the big tip is check with your local doctor before embarking on said trip.I thus missed a couple of days cycling and wasnt as strong re cycling as usual. The trip went like clockwork from the beginning to the end and the group jelled really well .As luck would have it we had a doctor and a nurse within the group [lucky me]The trip staff were excellent and food was great and the country worth the effort to see The locals were tremendous and never saw a cross word to anyone anywhere,a serene country.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me not able to perform at my best the downhill rides were a chance to express myself and really fly as physical effort was far less.Chased relentlessly by a passenger bus for several kilometres, horn blaring desperatly looking for somewhere to bail safely was awesome and when finally achieved wondering where the hell I was but it was all good. The real inspiration when sick in the mountains and unable to ride for a couple of days was to watch the others fight up a huge mountain climb finishing in darkening weather and all elated at the achievement.I also felt a little left out and downcast but the group were so good and so helpful that was inspirational and touching.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Outstanding.Suresh and his team are easily by the length of the straight and I have done some ten or so adventure trips, some into very dangerous enviroments[isolated areas of the andes white water rafting for extended times 10 hours from help]The teams I travelled with then were good but Suresh and his staff were the best even though the enviroment was far safer.I wa sso impressed I left my cycling jersey[s],pedals, pedal spanner and cleated shoes for the team. The reason I saw them all discreetly show acts of kindness to local poor people Drivers and especially the bike mechanic were outstanding as well

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are older like me but still capable check suitability of any medication and attend your doctor to make any adjustment.A virus and inappropriate medication nearly cost me the trip.Never feel too old and stay within your limitations. Most importantly train correctly before hand and dont rely on natural ability.I also noticed several people elected to have their own room which I have never bothered to spend the extra.I as with this trip have always had a good room buddy.I really observed this situation on this trip and came to the conclusion that it is possibly a good thing as keys and coming and going ,packing the wrong gear etc etc isnt an issue.Exodus it may be an area to look at keeping the cost for single rooms close to share arrangements.I am guessing you would lose a few prospective clients who baulk at single supplement.

Discover the Baltics

A very enjoyable trip. Well organised, as usual with Exodus, well led, surprisingly hot weather (30+ degrees) and three very interesting counties. We visited several fascinating cities, and heard a lot about the dark days of soviet rule, the struggle for independence, and its eventual achievement in 1991.

Most Inspirational Moment

Several highlights: the beautiful cities of Tallinn and Riga, the Curonian Spit, Trakai castle, a cold war nuclear weapons site, the "hill of crosses", and lots of churches!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nice lady, from Lithuania. She didn't know much about Estonia or Latvia so we had (very good) local guides, but when we got to her home city of Vilnius there was no stopping her!

Mt Blanc Circuit

Rightfully described as one of the world’s iconic trekking trails, the TMB met all my expectations. It was challenging and tough going in many parts. I can sit here back in England and reflect on something I am proud to have achieved and with every intention of encouraging friends to have their own go at. A great team of people to accompany me and led by a first class Mountain Leader in John, fed, watered and spiritually strengthened by our Cook, Graham.

Most Inspirational Moment

A glass of grappa and a toast to Walter Bonatti, in the refuge bearing his name. John our guide had told us the story of the famous Alpinist and his independence of spirit. On the wall a photograph of the man himself and the inscription 'L'aventura e dentro di noi' .

Thoughts on Group Leader

John was first class from start to finish. He had the gift of knowing when to talk and when not to. He allowed us to enjoy the mountains for ourselves but at the same time and at the right time, knew how to enrich that experience with his knowledge and love for the area.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get yourself fit before you take this one on. If you can't walk in hills or mountains then regularly run or cycle or swim or do some serious gym work, just to get you used to exertion and recovery. It's 100 miles and 10 000 metres of ascent and descent that is not to be underestimated.
