CYCLING IN GREECE

Demanding but enjoyable cycling enhanced by the archeological sites visited, the myths of ancient Greece recounted to us in the warm evenings and the quality, variety and value of the wonderful menus negotiated by our leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

My husband Michael sang queen's "Bicycle" at the Ampitheatre in the temple of Asklepius at Epidauros which was not only clearly heard by our party in the upper echelons but earned a round of applause from the many other tourists!!!! (He sang because our leader Christiana had pointed out in the excellent background notes that the ancient Greeks were expert at acoustic design and if you spoke from the centre point of the ampitheatre you would be heard clearly in the gods of the open air ampitheatre. She was absolutely right.) Also racing over the tops between Epidavros and Tolo and eating dinner on the beach that night.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader Cristiana and her no.2 Cristos were tremendous. This is the first time we have started a cycling holiday with a poem which turned out ot be a prophecy which came true on our trip. They responded to major and minor crisis by keeping us informed acting with the calm of the proverbial swan. They also saved us significant amounts of money by buying lunch through a kitty and negotiating our eveninig menus so that the cost of our food and drink on the holiday was way below the advised amounts in Exodus literature.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Mug up on Aesops Fables! Go on a diet before you set off!

CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE

Great holiday in a beautiful part of the World.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking up through the gorge.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Knowlegable fun charactor.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't worry about what Money to take as Katherina (hostess at house) will take Euros, Pounds or Lei at the house to pay for optional activities ( and drinks, more economical to buy a wine by the bottle than by the glass!) and you don't need any Lei until you get to Bran and then can get some from a cash machine.

IMPERIAL CHINA & YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE

Not unequalled, but equal first with a wonderful holiday we spent in New Zealand.

Most Inspirational Moment

For us, there were many great moments on this trip:Walking on the Great Wall.    Interacting with ordinary Chinese people in theTemple of Heaven Park.  Seeing Red & Giant Pandas (and baby giant pandas inthe nursery).  Cycling and kayaking in Yangshuo.  Very varied and interestingregional Chinese food (most meals had eight or more different dishes).Chinese cookery in countryside outside Yangshuo.  River cruise through Yangtzegorges.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Jenny was practically perfect in every way.  She looked afterus like a mother hen, dealt with difficulties very effectively and accommodatedpeople's wishes for changes to the trip (where these weren't mutuallyconflicting).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the Trip Notes carefully.  Take your own roll of toilet paper and keep afew sheets on you. Take your own antiseptic hand cleaner and keep it handy. If it rains, the rain can be very heavy: either accept getting quite wet (notactually that bad) or take truly waterproof clothes.  If you buy an umbrellalocally, open it and try it before handing over cash.

HIKING IN THE CANADIAN ROCKIES

A fantastic holiday enabling you to see the Rockies in a way that you would not experience if travelling on your own.  Though this is a challlenging set of hikes it’s perfectly doable for anyone who walks in areas like the Lake District.

Most Inspirational Moment

Loads of them, fantastic views, great scenery and seeing a grizzly bear up close.

Thoughts on Group Leader

You will be very lucky if you get Renee and Catherine as your leaders.  Not only are they knowledgeable and relaxed, but also superb cooks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get yourself walking-fit before you go.

INCA TRAIL & THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

Unforgettable first view of Machu Pichu, but exodus could do better.

Most Inspirational Moment

I initially booked this holiday for May, but due to an ‘admin error’, exodus somehow failed to buy me an inca trail permit before they all sold out! I was not impressed (in fact when they told me, with only 3 months to go, I was very upset), and was forced to reschedule my holiday to later in the year. That said, the Inca trail and Machu Pichu were fabulous; I will never forget that first sight of Machu Pichu and the feeling of having finally made it there. It was a real pilgrimage, with each successive Inca site on the trail or fabulous view of mountain tops through the clouds building up to that final arrival at Machu Pichu. The homestay on Amantani was magical and a welcome change of pace and chance to relax. The sound of the jungle at dawn.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wilbert was friendly and knowledgeable and worked very hard to ensure that everyone in the group was OK and had what they needed, especially on the trek, despite having more than the average number of medical issues to deal with amongst the group! Wilbert was good at setting a pace on the uphills that we could all manage, with frequent stops for everyone to catch up, and he gave us tips to help with the altitude. He even started playing an Andean flute to accompany us on the last stretch up to Dead Woman’s pass, which was surreal! On occasions, eg in Machu Pichu,  it might have been better to get a local guide with more fluent English or to let one of our two Inca trail guides tell us about a site on route – I found myself listening in to other groups or talking to one of our trail guides and learning more, more quickly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

On the trek, Exodus is good at setting off after the other tour groups, and consequently we frequently had the trail and the Inca sites on the way to ourselves. Arriving at the sun gate in the afternoon also meant there were fewer people and no queue to get through. The food on the trek was great, and the birthday cakes (*3) a much appreciated surprise. In fact the food in all the restaurants was pretty good, although priced for tourists. The hotels were all good (apart from Lima which wasn’t as clean as you’d hope for), especially in Cusco; some of the rooms had lovely views. The homestay on Amantani was lovely, with 3 guest rooms of 3 beds set around a courtyard and simply but beautifully furnished. If you pay the single supplement you do not get a dome tent to yourself, but a single man tent which is much lower – it was hard to avoid bumping my head or touching my feet on the inner layer, that said, I am 5’10 and per person there is more room inside than in a shared dome tent. There are a few areas where exodus could do better. The website and staff make a big play of going back to Machu Pichu at dawn the day after the trek to beat the crowds and spending a full day there, which was the main reason I chose exodus. We didn’t get there at dawn but a couple of hours after, when there were already a fair few other groups there. And then we were told we had to leave at 12.30 to get back to Aguas Calientes in time to get the train back to Cusco. So I felt my time in Machu Pichu was more like a half day than a full day and was consequently very rushed – I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to in the main site, and there would have been no time at all to climb Huayna Pichu or see the moon temple. Some people had to queue for 45 minutes to see Intihuatana. It seems a shame to go all that way and not get chance to see it properly. The website states that exodus use their own ‘chemical loos’. It’s a bucket lined with a thick bin bag with a seat on top. And it gets grim. I had to request it was put up on the first two nights (after initially being told it had been left on the bus) as I didn’t fancy the night-time (Diamox/squits-induced) trip up the hill in the dark to the squat-toilet shed. On our free day in Cusco Wilbert organised a trip to the Inca site at Pisac which was spectacular, and other stops on route such as the animal rescue sanctuary (including condors), the view over Cusco and Sacsayhuayman from the Jesus statue and various tourist shops/markets and viewpoints. I would have liked an extra day or two in/around Cusco to see more of the sacred valley sites such as an actual visit to Sacsaywayman and the nearby sites, Pisac market, Ollantaytambo, time to visit the Qoricancha or artists’ quarter in Cusco, or just time to sit and relax with a coffee in Cusco’s main square. It was all a bit rushed, especially when you were supposed to be taking it easy when you first arrived at altitude. I would gladly swap all of the time in Lima (largely spent in traffic it felt like) for more time in Cusco. In the jungle, for ‘health and safety’, we all had to trek along for several hours with luminous orange life jackets strapped to our rucksacks for the canoe trip on the lake. Eventually we all ended up sitting on them. Even the exodus trip notes photo shows no sign of them. Better to give people the option of taking them or not, as the colour, coupled with the chatting and size of the group, rendered our chances of seeing animals much reduced. During the 2 days we saw two pairs of capybara, another large rat thing, a squirrel, some mackaws in the distance, small monkeys in the trees, processions of leaf cutter ants, some turtles and some caimans rapidly sliding into the water, but no giant otters, howler monkeys, toucans, sloths, brightly coloured frogs or other mammals, and not as many birds as I was expecting. Finally, there were a couple of days where we had breakfast around 7am but didn’t get any lunch until around 3-4pm – the day spent getting from Lima to the jungle lodge and the trip to Pisac.

Peru Andean adventure!

This trip is amazing, I can’t believe all of the amazing things that we saw in such a short time. There is a lot of travelling involved but it is all worthwhile.

Most Inspirational Moment

Machu Picchu - Seeing the site for the first time was amazing! I couldn't believe the size of the site and the location is idyllic, high up in the mountains. We were lucky and had a day of sunshine and managed to get some incredible photos.Standing at 16,000 feet high at Mirador de los Andes. The views were incredible and this was the highest altitude I will probably ever stand at!Exploring Cuzco - I loved walking round this city, the feel and atmosphere of it is great. The views are incredible of the Andes!Nazca Lines - I took the fly over the Nazca Lines and the views are incredible. I did feel sick as the plane banks sharply so if you go on this trip, take some travel sickness tablets!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marcial was brilliant, he was full of information, we could ask him any question and he would always have an interesting answer. He was very organised and we always got to places on time. We were all kept informed when a miners' strike meant that we wouldn't be able to go to Taquile and Amantani Islands on Lake Titicaca the next morning and instead thought of something else for us to do.He is fun to be around with a great sense of humour and even came clubbing with us on a couple of nights! Also at the end of everyday he would be available if you needed to talk with him in private about anything troubling you.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take part in everything that you can and also tell your bank that you are going to Peru. I forgot to tell mine and they blocked my card in Cuzco when I went to a cash point to withdraw money!I found it useful to take a notebook and write down all of the places that we visited, I would never have remembered them all back home without it.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

Best trip until now! Great country for riders, amazing people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Often when children came to say "bye!" with that amazing smile as we passed by their houses. People is comunicative although you may not share languages. Also the riding was great, the landscape is green and paradisiac and you feel the calm that we lack in cities.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He couldn't be better. Always taking care of us, he planned very well the tea stops every 20km and as we arrived he always took care that everyone has the drink they want and something to eat before having something himself... and also he had personal details, and a great celebration cake when we arrived to the top of the Nuwara Eliya hill!!Also the other staff was very good, we always had water in the van to take and sometimes fresh fruit at the stops.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be fitted for the riding, as in summer it is really hot and humid. You can always jump to the van in front or the van behind, but you will savour the travel best from the bike, working out a bit before the travel is worth it!Don't be taken aback from having local food, is very interesting and you get used to spicy food. We had no problems with our bellies as far as I know.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

Great walks…great leader…great chalet with very welcoming hosts and fab food!

Most Inspirational Moment

We had a week of mixed weather, ranging from full waterproofs, rain & low cloud, to blue sky, sunglasses and sun cream.  The 2 best walks were (a) through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Italy for a walk in the shadow of Mont Blanc giving amazing views, and (b) the walk up to Tete de Balme on the France/Switzerland border.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nick was very good.  He modified the walks to take account of the poor weather conditions, and made the very best of the days with good weather.  He managed a group of mixed abilities well, including offering different options on the Tete de Balme day.  He also entertained us with slide shows of some expeditions he had been on.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are many options for the free day.  We went to Annecy, which takes awhile by train, but which is well worth a visit to see the lovely medieval old town.  Also would recommend the micro brewery in Chamonix ;-)

PETRA & WADI RUM BY BIKE

This is a fantastic non stop week of wonder

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many it is hard to believe so much was squeezed into one week.  On the 2nd day we descended from Mount Nebo towards the Jordan valley.   The sight of the ‘promised land’ rising up from in front of us was spectacular and gave me goose pimples.During a descent on the 4th day our cycle guides started dancing to music in the truck.  They were shortly joined by the bus driver, the mechanic and a few cyclists.   Great fun and a magical pit stop. The stars in Wadi rum are phenomenal.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We all loved Zuhair!  He was a non stop story book.   He had many forthright views on the middle east and I’m not sure his explanation of the Sunni/Shi'a divide was entirely objective but he spoke with unadulterated passion for Jordan.   He was immensely proud of his country and rightly so.   Petra by night was cancelled because of issues with people from the local town however he used his contacts in the Bedouin village to give us ‘Bedouin by night’.    He arranged for the coach driver to drive us into the desert where we had dinner in a cave cooked by a local Bedouin woman, her nephew and various friends.   It didn’t feel as if it was a show to keep the tourists happy instead it felt the most authentic moment of our trip. He made the entire week the success that it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I booked my own flights and this can be a considerable saving and what is more the flight times were preferable.  Admittedly you have to purchase your own Visa but this only costs £20 and was a simple process. Do not worry too much about clothing.  Our cycling guides wore lycra and were topless from within 3 minutes of a ride beginning.

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

Such a fantastic and diverse holiday, encompassing many of the highlights of the country and smiley faces wherever we went. Made all the better by a great group who really got on well and an exceptional leader in Roshan

Most Inspirational Moment

The time, effort and kind-heartedness that Roshan has invested in trying to help some of the people effected by the tsunami and the poverty (caused by years of war) is truly inspirational stuff and a lesson to us all. His informative morning talks really gave us a different perspective on the struggles of his people and being able to meet many locals on the trip felt very special.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan is a truly exceptional group leader and deservedly won the Exodus leader of the year in 2010. The fact that he has done this trip 195 times now and still has the boundless enthusiasm, passion and humour of a newby is quite incredible. He also plays a mean game of cricket which (as a cricketer myself) I really appreciated.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't have any pre-conceived ideas on what you do or don't want to do before you leave, or how much money you are willing to spend. The options are all worth doing for different reasons - but worth deciding how you feel on the day and after they are explained fully. Don't necessarily expect to see leopards or whales and you won't get too disappointed if you don't end up seeing any (as happeend for our group). And regarding the money - it's very easy to be persuaded into buying gifts and souvenirs - most of us came back with gems of some description. But that ensures that money does end up trickling down to the people who need it. Sri Lanka is still suffering from the years of war and political mismangement and the people need all the help they can get from tourism.
