A WEEK IN JORDAN

Great trip! We did so much in just one week that I now need another holiday! If you are interested in history and culture , this trip is for you.

Most Inspirational Moment

A few things which stood out for me. Floating in the Dead Sea. A weired experience , a bit like floating in oil. Petra. What can I say. AMAZING! Sleeping under the stars ( and shooting stars) in the beduine camp and then riding a camel at 6am the following morning. Scuba diving , seeing the corals, colourful fish and even a shipwreck in the Red Sea. ( my first time scuba diving so I was particularly pleased with this.)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Funny, friendly and seemed to know just about everything. Ala was great. He was incredibly organised and was willing to accommodate the group and change plans when some of the group wanted to visit the site of John the Baptist which wasn't on the itinerary. In his own words, " The food is lovely, the weather is lovely. Everything is lovely! "

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is a lot of walking involved so make sure you have comfy shoes. We found that hiking boots were not necessary and in August you certainly didn't need a sleeping bag for the desert. A sleeping bag liner was fine as there were blankets provided. Food and drink was a lot more expensive than I thought but I suspect that there is some sort of two tiered pricing system for tourists. Most meals were between 10 and 13 pounds and cans of soft drink ranged from 1 to 2.50 pounds. Food was good but quite similar wherever you went. I will now not be eating houmous or pitta for quite some time!

MONT BLANC TO THE MATTERHORN-ISH

An outstanding and challenging trip. The mix of day walking and light backpacking, and the slow transition from France, French Switzerland to German Switzerland meant every day was subtly different and interesting. The reward of the Matterhorn on the last day was mesmerising.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, there were several. Finally getting to see the Matterhorn was superb. I don't know who Exodus pays to do the weather, but they pay well - it was bathed in shining sun and was a worthy end to the trip. The challenge of getting up the Fenetre d'Arpette, Col du Reidmatten and Col du Torrent was immense. It was hard work, no doubt, but the views and feeling of elation was worth it. The best of all was chatting to a fellow tripper Mike, an engineer, experienced alpiniste, mountain walker and an inspiration. More of one of life's adventurers really, who had some amazing tales, like pushing a pram from London to Leicester in under 12 hours! It goes to show that the group really make the holiday and in this case, ours was excellent.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I felt Simon was an excellent guide. His hands off style really suited me as I felt I could try and walk on his (very fit) heels if I wanted to push myself, but equally, I could stroll at the back in my own time and not feel under pressure to be in sight at all times. It was quite refreshing to be "off the leash" a little as some Exodus trip-notes describe how a leader might allow everyone to walk at their own pace, but I'd yet to experience it. Again, it underlines how having a sensible, fit and smart group can really be the making of the holiday. Simon dealt well with the variable walking styles in the group too. Some wanted to walk and stop, have a paddle or take photos, others just wanted to push on, so it was nice to see trust from him to allow people to come on in their own time while he steered the diesel engines who just ploughed on relentlessly up front. I suffered with an ongoing injury that mean I had to sit out two days of walking (hence the ish), but I communicated with Simon each night as required to get an idea of what was coming, how I was feeling and so on and always felt looked after. In the end it came down to this for me - I had total faith that if there was a problem, Simon would deal with it perfectly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for it. It's a great route, and don't be put off by it sharing some of the TMB route at the start, if you've done that before. Even a month apart, the hillsides are totally different. If you're new to alpine dorms be aware, you might get a bunk bed, but equally, you might end up in an eight person wide mega-bunk. There's plenty of room and your own pillow and duvet (plus your liner) but private it ain't. It pays to get in early and bag a tidy spot, preferably next to a good friend. Earplugs and something to cover your eyes, like a Buff, really help too. Eat many rostis. With cheese, egg, bacon, ham, whatever. They're such good fuel and super tasty. If you're thinking of saving money by bringing your own chocolate bars in, this works really well, until they all melt horribly and you have to put them in a stream to make them solid again. Maybe muesli bars are the way to go?

WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

Memorable for:the people, the scenery, the walks, the fun and laughter which contributed to creating an unforgettable experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Our visit to Herculaneum which provided an insight into the lives of the inhabitants and their environment. The walk to the top of Vesuvius and around the crater rim where steam could be seen rising from the crater. The reaching of "the final flight of steps " on several occasions and the arrival at our destination where Christine would guide us toward a welcome café.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Her warm greeting of our party at the airport set the tone for our week's stay. Her professionalism was manifest in her extensive knowledge of the Amalfi coast, the walks and of the local community; its characters and history. It was also evident that she is welcomed and respected by those who live and work in Bomerano. She was also adept at motivating the group when necessary through her catchphrases and snackettes.Thank you Christine for all your hard work.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared: footwear that is comfortable and supportive, walking poles ( just in case you find yourself gently toppling over!), if you do not like flights of steps try a different holiday.

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

Excellent adventure holiday – just the right amount of physical and mental challenge. I also learnt so much more about Chinese history and culture than I thought I would thanks to our fabulous tour leader Jerry. All in all a fantastix experience and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Most Inspirational Moment

From start to finish it exceeded my expectations. The wall was very diferent to what I had imagined. Each day was different and the variety of the treks really added to the experience.  The most inspirational day for me was overcoming my own fears and challenging myself to walk the 'stairway to heaven' on day 2!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic. He was genuinely enthusiatic about trekking and the history of the Great Wall which allowed him to teach us more about Chinese history and culture than I had anticipated and it has certaintly wetted my appetite to learn more. He had a great sense of humour, looked after us amazingly well and was there to answer all our questions and help us whenever we needed him. I cannot rate him more highly!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would advice anyone who is considering this trip to read the exodus grading system. If you do not feel you are physically capable of taking on the challenge then don't go. If you do feel like you are up to it - go for it - it is an experience I will treasure.

ESSENTIAL PERU

Essential Peru packs a huge punch. It’s 14 days of none stop action, sights and experiences. It’s tiring at times but gives you a wonderful flavour of a wonderful country.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Machu Picchu from the sun gate.Flying over the Nazca LinesExperiencing the warmth, friendliness and peace of a village stay on Lake TiticacaExploring the streets of Cusco

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marciel was the star of the show. A consummate entertainer, informer and educator who never failed to go the extra mile to ensure every member of the group gained the maximum from the tour. He was a man so obviously in live with his wonderful country that his enthusiasm swept us all along with him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that there is a wide range of temperatures within the day and pack accordingly.Be aware that mosquitoes can be an issue for some people.Be aware that much of this tour takes place at altitude and strenuous activity can, quite literally, take your breath away!!

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

This trip was one of the best I have ever taken. From the moment of arriving in Morocco to the day I departed I felt like I was looked after and having a great time taking in all the stunning views and meeting new, interesting people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal! The whole group reached the top and it had been a fairly difficult hike due to the altitude, but we all made it and had a lovely picnic at the top, whilst enjoying the extensive views across to the Sahara.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Mohamed was excellent. A very knowledgeable and friendly guy, who took a real interest in the group and who we were. He is highly competent in the mountains and knows his stuff!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book this trip if you want a challenging, but extremely rewarding holiday. Also, ladies, make sure you take clothes that will cover you up for walking around Marrakesh.

WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

This is a superb holiday with just the right mix of walking and sight-seeing. The group leader was outstanding and the hotel staff superb.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the rim of Vesuvius.Visiting Herculaneum.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine is the best group leader that I have ever had and an absolute asset to Exodus. She is a consummate professional. From the minute she met us at the airport until the minute we left she smiled. Christine has built up an enormous network of contacts within the local community which meant that the holiday ran without a hitch. At various moments she produced little treats for us, all paid for out of her own pocket. Christine's knowledge of the local area is second to none. This holiday would not have been the same without Christine's guidance and humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare for steps! The neighbours can be quite lively.

AMALFI COAST: POMPEII & PIZZA - FAMILY HOLIDAY

This is a great introduction to small-group holidays with lots of elements sure to appeal to families. There was time to swim on most of the days either at the hotel pool or at a beach and this was popular with the children in the group I joined.

Most Inspirational Moment

My family loved the section of 'The Walk of the Gods' and the lunch that day.  The views were fantastic and the lunch was lovely. The water-taxi trips gave us great views of the coastline and a chance to appreciate its beauty while avoiding the twists and turns on the roads. One of the highlights for my son was making his own pizza in the hotel and he talks about it often now we're back home.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Eduardo was born in the area and knows it and the people well.  He likes people and is happy to take suggestions for changes to the finer details. The trip included some opportunities you'd need local links for eg to see local people at their work making cheese.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The younger children seemed to struggle with the late dinners and/or late nights. Some were very fractious as the day went on. The hotel dinners started at 8pm so families might like to know this before they book.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

Food was ok but bland. Although the group were asked at the beginning if anyone had any objections to the owners dogs walking every day I felt that the majority group agreement ruled but my interest is wild life whilst walking so hung back from the group when walking, having that said they were on leads and well behaved…I am not a dog lover

Most Inspirational Moment

General landscape of Tuscany

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent very friendly, helpful, organised and extremely informative in all aspects of holiday

Advice for Potential Travellers

I felt that some of the walkers were not prepared for walking in Tuscany in terms of footwear it was far more than just rolling hills, the trip notes and advice are spot on

A WEEK IN JORDAN

One word…. Wow!

Most Inspirational Moment

I don't know where to start! From floating in the Dead Sea, being touching distance from Israel, having tea with a Bedouin; sleeping and flying in Jeeps over the desert;.... Just brilliant!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

A human encyclopedia! Very knowledgeable and had a passion for the country that was infectious!  Watch out for being ripped off for what I suspect was swapped for commission and freebies (meals and stops at shopping places) though.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it!
