KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

Trip of a lifetime, did what it said on the tin.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit, and the attention that the African walking company gave to me, without them it would not of been possible.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Florence, simply the best, happy, smiling, motivational

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be physically and mentally prepared for what the trip holds, not for the faint hearted.

Suggestions

You have to except the conditions of the country you are visiting, I have returned with a very nasty skin infection from the cups that we used.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

A fantastic trek, excellently organised and guided by the team. Don’t be fooled that it’s easy just because Chris Moyles or Cheryl Cole can do it – 6 out of 12 in our group made it to Uhuru, with 9 out of 12 to Gilman’s point. The summit evening is a real slog but well worth it at the top.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top and walking by the glaciers on the way to Uhuru. The summit day wasvery difficult but well worth it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide was excellent (as we have always found with Exodus) - he really helped some of the team make it to the top and looked after the group very well. The entire team of guides and porters were excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

The full moon trek ascent was well worth it so it wasn't pitch black when climbing to Gliman's point. Take a SIGG water bottle so you can fill it with hot-water and use as a hot water bottle in the evenings. Get an insulated tube cover and mouthpiece cover for your camel bak.

Suggestions

Brilliant trip. Well worth it. And perfect if you're lucky enough to be able to tag on safari and zanzibar too.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

Overall a lovely holiday with trying & emotional times mixed in with absolute dlelight and pleasure.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Kili, not just on my own but with oldest and youngest of the group.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He has very good, very informative and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Listen to what you are advised to do on this particular holiday both before and during there were some golden nuggets both in the written advice from Exodus and the team which helped a lot.

Suggestions

Not really except it is a holiday and one of lifes experiences that one does not often have the opportunity to take and I would definitely recommend it it - with Exodus.  I found no fault with any of the travel arrangements or accomodattion which were superb.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

An amazing time. From start to finish one of the most enjoyable things that I have ever done. Cannot fault it at all. Great food, great company and many friends made

Most Inspirational Moment

Obviously getting to the summit was special but I also found the tipping ceremony to be very humbling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Naihman (spelling) was an absolute star although it would be wrong not to mention all the guides who did their upmost to unsure that as many as possible made it to the top

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's all been said before - listen to the guides, pole pole etc. A few people have suggested a nail brush to help clean hands. As the rongai route is so dusty I would also suggest a thin pair of gloves to be worn as well because the nail brush will not cut the mustard on it's own. Also wearing gaitors from the off would help. (you may not win any style awards but hey who cares) A few of the group took diamox to help. I took one tablet and it made me feel quite ill. Nausea and an awful lot of toilet trips. 2.5 litres overnight. I took anadin extra after and didn't suffer again from any symptoms. Apart from that give away as much kit as you can afford (or even if you cannot)- the porters and guides work exceptionally hard and when you see them running past you with a massive bag on their heads and their own kit but flip flops on their feet and old T-shirts etc it makes you realise how fortunate we are. As the head guide said to me at the tipping ceremony "in Tanzania we have a saying that what you give in this world god will give you inthe next" it does make it worthwhile.

Suggestions

Perhaps better arrangements for getting back to airport. There was no rep when we had to leave and the bus was 45 minutes late which wasn't ideal

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

A truly memorable trip to Tanzania and reaching the roof of Africa – no better way to spend your honeymoon!

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the sun rise at Gilman's point was breath-taking - a welcome relief from the trek up to the summit in the dark and cold. The final hike to Uhuru peak was surpisingly straightforward and the photos at the true summit were amazing - and have no formed the basis of out wedding thank-you cards!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was very experienced. Some of the rules and advice for high altitude trekking may seem counter-intuitive but the leaders explained the kit, clothing and techniques simply and effectively. They all had a great sense of humour and motivated us throughout.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice for potential travellers -  1) make sure you are fit! There were marathon runners and tri-athletes in our group - we all found the final summit hard to reach but it was a real team effort to get there.2) Try to keep your water bottles warm during the summit ascent - trying to drink semi-frozen water is a horrible experience when you have to stay hydrated3)  If reaching the summit is your goal do everything you can to maximise the acclimatisation. Arrive a few days early and walk around the local area which will be at more altitude than you are used to.4) Don't forget the suntan lotion on the summit ascent (like I did). Sun at 6000M will burn your face to a crisp - I had chapped lips for days after5) Get a comfortable 35 litre day sack (eg Osprey)

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

Once in a lifetime, stunning experience….Exodus did it again!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching Gilman's and realising I could try to reach Uruhu which I thought was beyond me. Also seeing the posters do their ceremony at the end of the trip, watching their faces light up, seeing their appreciation and sharing the donations we had supplied to them.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Awesome! Priscus was not only great with us but also ovserving him with his team, he always seemed really fair, in control and encouraging by letting the other guides get involved in everything. He clearly wanted what was best for us AND for all of his staff. Was really refreshing to see. His knowledge was brilliant, all the guides had amazing knowledge and all did their best to get to know us all and that made us pull together as a team. What an amazing group of people!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pole, Pole! Slowly, slowly! No need to rush, take your time, enjoy the views. Drink loads and eat pleanty, you need the energy - the food made was amazing throughout the trip so enjoy it!Take some snacks with you, you will especially need something for summit day, so try some sugary type things, squares of chocolate or nuts/dred fruit.Take babywipes and a flannel for 'washy, washy' and a small bar of soap. Might sound obvious but I didn't realise we would have access to a small bowl of water most days which was great.Take layers, also if you have some old clothers that you may not wish to keep after the trip, please take them with you and leave them for the porters once the trip is complete.

Suggestions

This was an amazing trip, be prepared to work hard, it might look easy-ish on paper but it's not all easy peasy! It was the trip of a lifetime, the group bonded so, so well and EVERY single porter went out of his or her way to help. The trip is organised brilliantly so you don't have to worry about anything.Stick it out, the views are simply stunning and pictures don't do them justice.POLE, POLE and when you are ready...TWENDE!!!!!!:-)

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

From the minute I arrived in Tanzania, I felt looked after. The hotel stay was brilliant, the guides were awesome, the porters were fantastic, the food was amazing and reaching the summit was the cherry on the icing on the cake! I enjoyed every moment of this trip, it was well organised, with great communication and a fabulous support team! This was an unforgettable trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

There are so many parts of my trip that left me feeling inspired and humbled. The work of the porters to completely look after you and support you, the commitment of the guides to keep you safe and get you to the summit, the cooking on a mountain in Africa. The views and sunsets. The people of Africa. I loved it all and feel inspired by the whole trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Makeke, was friendly, committed, knowledgeable, thorough and hardworking. He had an omnipresent ability, always there to support but never in your way or in your face. Just always there if you needed him. I will never forget his efforts to get us to the top of Africa, and the emotions he showed when we made it down too! A very nice man who worked very hard for the whole group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travel lightBe as fit as you can be, do some long long walksHave a good sleeping mat and bagMake sure your walking boots are v comfortable and well wornTake lots of baby wipesTake lots of small notes in your currencyKeep a positive mental attitude

Suggestions

This trip was definitely a highlight in my life. It was something I had wanted to do for a long time and so glad I was in a position to be able to do it.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

An amazing experience, great scenery, long hard days, excellent food and catering, great guides. The trip is tough but well worth it as one of these once in a life time events

Most Inspirational Moment

The most impressive sight was mid way in when i walked out of my tent and saw that we were above cloud cover. At 3,500m in the morning, feeling like you are standing on top of the clouds is an odd sensation. That was a better sight than the summit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledge, had been up the mountain 104 times and our trip was his 105th! I didn't see him much, the other guides were the main people who walked with us, but the best kind of group leader is one who makes sure everything is done and sorted and the one you don't see rushing around shouting at people. It was all very professional. The other guides were amazing, they didn't talk too much, but you always knew they were there, ready to help.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't underestimate this trip. Even though Kilimanjaro has become commercialized with 30,000 people going up each year and the whole fan fare of the celebrities going up it, the trip is still hard. Altitude is hard to adjust to and you will have no idea how you whilst you are sitting at sea level reading this. I got bad altitude sickness which actually prevented me from gettting to the true summit, I only managed to get to Gilman's point, as I was being sick for a good 4 hours prior to getting there. If you are getting headaches and feeling ill early one, i.e. before base camp, take altitude sickness pills. I acclimatised slowly and usually over night, but at base camp (Kibo Hut 4700m) you may be able to acclimatise, but once you start summitting you are climbing 1000m in one night to the true summit (5900m), there is little chance to acclimatise whilst climbing, so if you get sick it is too late to take pills. In heinsight i would begin starting altitude sickness pills from the start. If you weren't going to get sick its fine, but if you were, then taking them may reduce the effects of the sickness. Essentially I didn't take them and if i had, i may have summitted, something which i am gutted about. The only problem about pills is that the side effects can be the effects of altitude sickness, so if you don't think you are going to get and then take the pills, the side effects from the pills could be make it look like you have altitude sickness when you don't. Hard choice. Obviously you need to seek professional advice around this, and I can only say what I would have done.

Suggestions

Firstly enjoy it, the days before summit are managable and enjoyable. Summit is hard, cold and long, don't underestimate it. Pack well, but don't over pack. Don't worry about water purification tablets, i bought some but the guides would treat the water every day, so buying it was a waste. Layers are good, but also good quality gear is key, especially a down jacket on summit night, it was so cold, water froze in my bottles and froze in my camel back tube! Exodus's guide to what to take is pretty good. In terms of cash i took $200. I tipped $130 (the big general tip at the end), and the rest was spent on drinks and tipping other guides/porters individually. Other people took much more, some $700, which i thought was far too much. You wont spend anything on the mountain, except say the odd coke($3) or snickers ($4) at Kibo Hut, the rest you can spend on drinks at the end, up to you i guess. Also take some entertainment for the evenings, thankfully one person in our group brought some cards, that made the evenings go quickly, no one wants to go to bed at 7.30pm! I would probably advise on doing a different route than Rongai as Rongai i think is the hardest. But then again having walked back down through another route, I would say the Rongai is more interesting in terms of scenery than the other ones. You also stay in tents, rather than everyone sleeping in a wooden hut together.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

The stars don’t really do this trip just.  The trip was INCREDIBLE and I would recommend climbing Kilimanjaro to anyone, without hesitation.  I’d do it again, just not with Exodus.   Exodus added no value (in fact at times they negatively impacted my trip); the real superstars were African Walking Company.  AWC made the trip the unforgettable, fun, safe trip it was.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trail of lights snaking up the mountain on summit day.Getting to Uhuru despite hours of altitude sickness and the constant fear that I couldn't go on.Arriving at Mwenzi camp in the glorious sunshine and being faced with the awesome terrifying beauty of the rocky landscape.Singing with the guides.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tosher and his assistant guides were rockstars.  They're genuine and kind and have awesome senses of humour.  They were incredibly patient.  My Kili Angel was Christopher who kept my buoyant (and held back my hair when needed!) on summit day.  He kept me smiling and walking.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Eat lots the day before summit day.  You'll need the energy.Bring with you waterproof cover for your pack.A body warmer/gillet is an essential clothing item.Don't forget hand sanitiser or tissues.  You'll need to blow your nose a lot.Camel pack is the best water carrier.

Suggestions

I'll never forget this trip.  I can't tell you how much it means to me.  Do it; just don't book it with Exodus.  The trip was brilliant despite the company letting me down; however, that's to the credit of African Walking Company.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

This trip is a wonderful experience.  It is do able if you listen and follow all the advice you are given by the guides.  It is hard work in places though!  It is a well organised trip and nothing is left to chance.  Our group were well looked after every step of the way.

Most Inspirational Moment

Waking to bright sunshine on Day 2 and discovering all the clouds below us with a clear view of Kibo was one.Seeing the sunrise on the horizon just before reaching Gilmans point was truly spectacular for me.  Something I will never forget.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Meke is a fine leader. He is always positive and calm and the camp runs smoothly under his guidance.  His team of guides; Saide, Stratton, Godfrey, Ami, Julius etc helped and aided us all the time.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just read and follow advice about drinking lots of water and eating well (the food is good at camp and plentiful).I was surprised at how much dust is on the mountain.  A thin silk scarf across the mouth or very fine guage buff could be an advantage to keep the dust from your mouth and nose.Do take a nail brush!P.S. this was my first experience of camping in a tent-and it was fine!

Suggestions

Kilimanjaro is a total experience, I feel very priviliged to have been there.
