A WEEK IN JORDAN

A great week full of varied activities, amazing sights, fantastic food and wonderful local people. Great guide could not have done more to accomodate the whole groups needs. I would happily go back to Jordan to spend more time hiking.

Most Inspirational Moment

Ascending to the top of Aarons Tomb for 360 degree views as far as the eye could see. This was an optional hike but the whole Petra area is a real highlight.

Khaled - Wonderful, warm, intelligent, humorous, well educated confident and capable. A genuinely nice bloke.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Veggie heaven - mezze is amazing! Don't worry about the "Arab spring" - you will be safer in Jordan than you are in the uk. Be prepared for low water pressure in the hotel showers, but it is a desert country after all! The two full days spent in Petra are the really great advantage of this particular tour. Ive talked to people who have been to Petra with other tour operators and they have not had the experience that we did!

Most Inspirational Moment

Wow our hostess Katerina was a pretty inspirational woman, speaks 3 languages, runs a guest house in a national park, and has been at the forefront of animal (particularly European Brown Bear) protection and conservation in the Carpathian region.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cosmin Dan was a great leader, with imense knowledge and love for his surroundings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You will be going up and down Mountains, so definately a reasonable level of fitness needed however Cosmin was very good at breaking often and making sure everyone caught up. If I did this trip again I would take just Romanian Lei with me and not bother with ATMs or taking Euro's as you dont need an awful lot money, unless you are a serial souvenier hunter!!

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

Loved the Atlas mountains, especially the Mt Ouanalrim trek. Guide was fantastic, maintained a steady pace and was very knowledgeable. Not as challenging as i was expecting. Am now addicted to Moroccan mint tea!

Most Inspirational Moment

The Mt Ounankrim climb was much more interesting than Toubkal, the views from the summit were amazing and there was no one else there to share them with.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mohammed was a great guide. We were amazed that he was able to be so energetic whilst fasting for Ramadan.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Watch out in Marrakech, we were short changed by a market trader but were distracted by someone else so by the time we noticed it was too late to complain.

EVEREST BASE CAMP & GOKYO LAKES

The trek from beginning to end was an amazing experience made all the better for Exedus’s usual attention to detail and superb organisation. This is a challenging but really superb trek which anyone with a willingness to stretch themself can do.   

Most Inspirational Moment

Almost too many to list but seeing Everest for the first time, the sun breaking through at Gokyo after a day walking in a blizzard, the views from Gokyo Ri and Cho La and making it to Base Camp will stay with me for many years to come.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lapka was an excellent leader. He was friendly, approachable and totally professional. His sense of fun made even the hardest of days enjoyable as did the rest of his team. They were all so encouraging and enthusiastic there was never any doubt we would all make the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want to see Everest and trek to Base Camp then I would recommend Gokyo as a more challenging but satifying alternative to the straight Base Camp trek. The route to Gokyo is quieter and the views from Gokyo Ri and the climb over Cho La are a never to be forgotten experience. Get yourself reasonably fit before you go, follow the advice of the Exodus guides, drink plenty, keep the pace steady and have a great time.

Physically hard but very interesting trip.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MOROCCO

This was a great holiday that included so many aspects of Morroco.  To travel from city to desert to mountains to coast meant that there was something new to experience everyday.  This seemed to make the holiday longer as looking back we did so much.  

Most Inspirational Moment

The reason I booked the trip was the camel trek into the Sahara and camping out under the stars in the desert.  I wasn't disappointed.  It was amazing sitting around the camp fire after a delicious dinner, singing and drumming Berber style.  Teaching four Berber men how to do the Hockey Cockey was absolutely hilarious, their ability to let themselves go was inspirational and a memory I won't forget.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would pack a range of clothing when travelling in winter months.  The temperature dropped whilst travelling and walking in the Atlas mountains and it was essential to have some dry warm clothes to come back to.  A good way to warm up was going to the local Hamam or baths, lovely hot steamy water and interesting insight into everyday Morrocan life.

CYCLING CUBA

Cuba is a unique caribbean country at times it feels more African than Latino due to a large Afro Caribbean Population.  Religions Catholic and Santeria mix, music runs through the veins of the people and on a bike you can travel into the lush heartlands of the island far away from tourists. Routes are good, a few hilly sections but i am not a regular cycle tourer and i managed the trip although at a slower pace! Accommodation ranged from 5 star to beach bungalows, Some roads were empty some were busier but it was a great way to see the different forms of local transport be it a shining cadillac or a horse drawn carriage, facinating. I am a vegetarian but eat fish so food was not a problem as there was always an alternative for me. As a solo departure every one was mixing and we all became like a big family by the end of the journey!!

Most Inspirational Moment

At the end of every day i was always happy that i could keep up with the enthusiats and we could all relax with a few beers or Mojito in the bar before dinner.  We also learnt alot about the events of the Cuban revolution and Cuba's history and the vital parts played by Castro and Che. The cuban people were welcoming and proud of their country.It was refreshing to see a country not blighted by commercialism.

Jose our group leader was fab. Full of energy and laughs and every day we were told of the program and the route. The two drivers were also lovely and on a few evenings we were salsaing with them to improve our steps. We also were lucky to be invited to one driver's house for lunch. 

Advice for Potential Travellers

As long as you are relatively fit this tour is not too difficult, there is always a back up bus that i went into for two short times. Cycle shorts are a must!  If you have time and money you may want to stay on a bit longer in Havana after the tour as there is not much time to take in all of Havana. Around Trindad locals kept asking for soap i gave them my soap that we invariably received in the hotel rooms they were only small bars but they were happy to receive them!If you have a video on your camera you can record some of the fantastic music and the memories will flood back when you get home 

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

6 different and interesting days/part days walking along the wall but not enough to do everyday.  Beijing interesting historically if a little a smoggy!  Terrocotta Army and X’ian a must do extension amazing.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Terracota Warriors and the history behind them was amazing.  Well worth a visit.  The Great Wall is an amazing unbelievable sight aswell and walking along it for 6 days did it justice and showed how variable it is especially the non rebuilt bits which were better than the main stream tourist parts.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Made the trip "without sparkle" from your previous options.  Slow to impart information and normally the group leader with Exodus is amazing and you learn loads about the country, unfortunately John gave little information out.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take wet wipes as our 1st homestay had no running water and take snacks as food a little unreliable!!Take a good camera as sites worth a picture!!If you go in October it's really cold at night in homestays, take warm clothes or layers as we were all very chilly, there was frost one night!

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

 This has to be one of our most enjoyable holidays – our worry now is how we can top it this year! The camping bit was great as all were thrown in together from the start – having a cup of coffee or a cold beer with a nice cake or biscuits ready when you arrived at camp after a hard day’s walking was superb.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think the last day was really great as the views were spectacular all day, with classis views of Mont Blanc and its environs.  But there were many other days that were fantastic as we were challenging ourselves all the time. In fact we gained fitness throughout the holiday, even though we were pretty fit beforehand through much cycling and walking training.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Mel was fantastic. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of flora and fauna, being in the mountains, geography - her general knowledge was amazing. When we were with her we felt totally secure and were never concerned out our safety.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get plenty of training in beforehand so you will enjoy your trip and not be concerned about how you will manage. You need to be able to do some consecutive long walks so make the training fun and go for a few days in the Lakes or the Derbyshire hills. Another thing - it can be really very cold in the evenings in September so a good 3 or 4 seasons sleeping bag is essential unless you enjoy sleeping in your clothes!
