"The balloon ride, walking along the Ihlara Valley on Friday Cooking experience and lunch with the family"
We were in expert, caring hands with Ioana, whose guidance, knowledge and advice ensured a wonderful holiday.,
Matera has to be the highlight, but getting trulli trollied in an Alberrabello trulli will live long in the memory. We loved the walk to the beach and the swim in the clear aquamarine waters before a sumptuous fish lunch. Beautiful Ostuni, although as already mentioned more time here to appreciate the culture of the town would have been welcomed.
So caring, so patient, so welcoming. Her regional knowledge and love for her homeland did much to make this holiday so memorable. With a locality that has been inhabited continuously for over 9000 years it is rather good to have a guide that has a degree in archeology and anthropology.
Just returned from 11 days in the beautiful Balkans with 16 other great people making up the tour group. The itinerary was well planned, considered and delivered and gave me a greater insight into this part of the world I had longed to visit. The range of landscapes and cityscapes we journeyed to and through were breathtaking with enough guided and free time to learn, explore and absorb.
One of the standout experiences was the visit to the home of a family in the village of Podgora. We were offered the most delicious lunch, most if not all sourced from their land. Their hospitality was so warm and welcoming. The city tour of Sarajevo with guide Alem was really interesting and his delivery was superb as was our tour of Kotor and Cetinje with the fabulous Ivana.
Fatima was the most wonderful guide to us from start to finish. From the depth of her historical/social/ political knowledge of the places we visited to her care and compassion towards us was above and beyond. She clearly loves her role and we enjoyed the enthusiasm, humour and smiles she bought to each day. The world needs more Fatima’s!!!
Be prepared for some quite long coach journeys but you are certainly rewarded with stunning scenery. Our morning trip to Durmitor National Park with walks around the black lake -you’ll find a toilet block at the beginning of the walk with a wooden decked path up to it. This decking was very slippery on our visit. It had been raining the night before. So perhaps under similar weather conditions it would be safer to use the toilet in the adjacent cafe.
I enjoyed a fabulous trek doing the Camino de Santiago in September. Our leader Aitor was excellent and very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and patient guide. We were fortunate also in enjoying great weather too. The scenery and villages along the way were beautiful. To anyone thinking of doing this trek I would say go ahead! The camardarie from other pilgrims/trekkers along the way was an absolute inspiration too.
Reaching the square in Santiago, the Cathedral is awe inspiring and the mass very moving. I also enjoyed the many cafes and rest stops along the way where there was always a great welcome and tempting treats.
Our leader was very approachable, nothing was too much trouble. He was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the route and great fun to walk with. I can't recommend him highly enough, he is a real credit to your organisation.
Take plenty of photos and blister plasters!!
Well organised before and during. Everything within Exodus’s control ran like clockwork.
Crossing the high passes and the boat trip on Komani lake went through scenery reminiscent of Norwegian fjords. Cities of Kruges and Berat gave a great contrast having spent a few days in the empty spectacular mountains.
Bleaerd was a great guide, very knowledgeable and personable, we always felt safe in his hands.
Go now before the mountain villages become like a modern Alpine resort. Understandably the local economy will benefit from all the new hotels being built and this cannot be denied in one of the poorest countries in Europe. But as I said go now before there is a massive increase in tourism. The guest house accommodation was a challenge for some people who did not realise they might be sharing a room with other members of the trip. This is because there is a shortage of accommodation in Theth. It is only 2 nights but be prepared.
This was a trip selected for its variety and travel in South African Spring – from whale watching to wine tasting , underground with cave tour to the heights of zip lining – alongside superb locations and great food – and as it’s outside of the main season we had beaches and locations to ourselves the majority of the time
Whale watching from the shore in Hermanus was incredible and staying in a log cabin so close to the edge of the thunderous ocean were two of many highlights … and of course your safari on the plains of Addo and Scotia were perfect in every way .
We struck gold with Andrew, he was the best type of guide - knowledgeable , supportive and good fun - took all the stress out of travel and created a great atmosphere for everyone .
Remember the season - if you travel in September it’s still early spring so take warm clothes and waterproofs .
We’ve just returned from this trip and it was amazing. The views are stunning on this trip, Maria was our guide and he was just great. He got us safely round, motivated us when we needed it and was a pleasure to spend time with. The lodges are great, there’s towels and shower gel provided. Some had hairdryers but not all. After a days trekking it was great to have a few drinks and a nice meal with the group, we did the pack ups just for easiness which were pricier but good, there were more options for buying your own stuff the second half of the trek. We ended up with 8kg in our bags and we had everything we needed, packing lightly is the key as you’ve also got water and pack up to carry! Fitness wise it’s a hard but doable trip, the fitter you are the more you’ll enjoy it, the uphills are a slog but the views are worth it. We personally found walking poles a necessity, they saved my joints a lot especially on the downhills. We had a few dips in the rivers but just in our walking gear, it was cold but very refreshing at the end of the day! The last two nights we spent in Chamonix and it was great to have your spare bag for fresh clothes and a few little luxury’s. Highly recommend this trip, if your in doubt just book it, Exodus are a great company to travel with, thanks again Maria for being a great guide!
The views on the high passes are just stunning! Finishing everyday feeling like you’ve accomplished something.
Maria was just brilliant, he had the right level of letting us get on with it and managing us when we needed it. He was friendly, personable, funny, knowledgeable and a pleasure to be around. We had some lovely evenings with him, he was great with anyone that was struggling and went above and beyond to help them.
Pack lightly, follow the trip notes for what you need. Walking poles helped massively. The pack ups are pricier but nice, bed your boots in, take blister plasters if in doubt!
where do I start!! we saw the big 5 and more it was amazing to be so close to the animals in their natural environment, watching a lion walk towards us was breath-taking and seeing the migration is a once in a lifetime experience. our leader a massi warrior Jackson was incredible at spotting animals for us even the birds, a tortoise, cheetah with her kill, leopards up a tree with its kill, elephants I can go on the migration season is the perfect time to see them all. I am blown away by the close proximity that we got to most of the animals without disturbing them that we could hear then pull the grass out and hear them chew. To have zebra crossing Infront and behind us, seeing the giraffe so close you can almost touch them, I’m bowled over by the whole trip, I have priceless memories for life!! I feel very lucky that I have had the chance to experience all I saw on this amazing trip
floating above the mara in a hot air balloon at sunrise was magical!! seeing how vast the mara is and its many colour from high above is something I will never forget. Then after the balloon ride our driver for the morning found us a pride of lions that had a recent kill, we got so close to them we could hear them breathing!! also seeing the local maasi village and hearing the beautiful voices of the men and women singing their songs with no instruments was amazing, the pure joy and welcoming nature of all the people we met was beautiful. they seem to have music pulsating from their entire being!!
Our Maasi guide Jackson was amazing!! he has amazing eyesight spotting all the big 5 for us even the black rhino which looked like it was 1km away!! Jackson was amazing giving us answers to questions we had about the animals and his life too. he went out of his way to help me when I was purchasing some goods at a shop and got me a good price. I have made a friend for life in Jackson!!
you will eat lots the food at all the hotels is amazing!! there will be noises at night so take ear plugs!! this trip will leave you smiling and feeling so lucky to be in the presence of such majestic animals
Easy flat cycling. excellent guide’ good weather. great group
hearing the personal stories of the locals
Excellent
Come prepared to listen and learn
We had an amazing time. Our tour leader, Fatima, was absolutely wonderful. Our driver, Samir (sp?) is the most chilled man in Bosnia and an excellent driver on all those narrow windy roads. Our group gelled really well and we had lots of fun together. The tour had a good balance of city highlights, combined with rural villages and getting out into nature for short refreshing walks and swims. We had some excellent homemade traditional food as well as great restaurants, especially Babylon in Mostar where we had a great view of the bridge and Red Bull bridge diving competition. And another restaurant set on the banks of a river. We learned a great deal about the complicated history of the Balkan countries as well as current political situations. Bosnia, Montenegro and Croatia are all phenomenally beautiful countries. But Bosnia in particular blew me away with its gorgeous mountains, rivers, lake, waterfalls and warm, genuine people. A feast for the eye and soul.
There were so many highlights and beautiful places on this trip that it’s hard to choose… We drove up a narrow windy gravel and dirt road, passing the most magnificent landscapes, up to Lukomir, the highest village in Bosnia. We went for a short walk up the hill overlooking the gorge and mountain ranges for spectacular views. After, we had a wonderful homemade lunch of locally grown and prepared food and the strongest coffee I ever tasted. Just enjoying the sound of the wind, crisp clean air and peace up there was such a gift.
Fatima was an excellent leader and her enthusiasm and sincere commitment to make sure everyone had the best possible time was amazing. She helped us carry heavy suitcases up stairs, made sure dinner arrangements were made and orders placed ahead of time to maximize free time. She dealt with two serious medical issues in our group professionally and with great care and empathy, and even after a long night at the emergency room, joined us for breakfast bright and early with her usual smile. She translated where needed, shared difficult stories of her own family history during the war and made personal connections with each person. She is a beautiful person inside and out.
If you’re prone to motion sickness, bring your meds. The roads are narrow and windy, but the views truly make up for it.
