Amalfi 26Aug23

This was our 20th Exodus trip and one of the best run. We would place Veriano with Gum in Nepal, Martin Gray in Antarctica and Sarah in Tuscany as the best leaders.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of Vesuvius.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was an excellent leader. He juggled the itinerary to suit the weather forecast. He managed to find us shelter when it rained. He accommodated all our requests. He did it all with humour and patience. He had an excellent knowledge of the area and was keen for us to love it as he does. He is a very nice young man.

Suggestions

We found Amalfi and Positano far too busy for our taste.

Great guide, great views, great group... great trip

Wonderful from start to finish, Paulo our guide was amazing and took us places we just wouldn’t have gone without him. Loved the walk to Amalfi from the hotel and also walking the crater of Versuvius was a once in a lifetime opportunity (particularly when you see other tourists just being able to do a small stretch). Bomerano is a lovely Italian village and you do feel you’re away from the usual coatal tourist traps.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking round the crater of a live volcano...

Amazing

This was a fantastic trip walks a good pace and the scenery was breath taking Hotel food was good very accommodating to non pasta eaters like myself always had an alternative Lunches were freshly made with a choice of fillings daily Hotel clean and comfortable good location

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole group walking the rim of Vesuvius What an experience

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teressa was brilliant she was friendly and helpful with a great knowledge of the area The group bonded from the first night with a good fun vibe Teressa very quickly saw we were all there to have fun and get on as a group She seemed to really enjoy the groups company even joining us for the bbq night on her day off

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get some hilly walking in before you go I am a very regular walker and was glad I put in a bit of extra training before the trip Lots of steps down are tough be prepared for sore calf mussels

Suggestions

Stay an extra few nights if you have time lovely area and easy to get round on the bus

Fantastic trip, gorgeous views, lots of stairs!

Not only were the walks on this trip great, the views were amazing at every turn. The trip notes are not lying when they say there are lots of stairs so be prepared for some achy calves, however it is absolutely worth it. The hotel accommodation is great and the food is delicious (we even ate there on our free night) so don’t be put off by eating in the same place every night. The barman also did the best limoncello spritzer I’ve ever had! I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone thinking about going to the Amalfi Coast. Walking it really is the best way to see it.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the rim of Vesuvius was a wonderful experience. Spending time in Ravello and exploring Villa Ruffalo was also a definite hightlight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teresa was fantastic, she quickly recognised that we were a fun group and adapted very well to our personalities. She was extremely knowledgeable of the area, made great recommendations and was happy to help with any queries, big or small.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for steps. The hotel has walking poles, but if you have your own I would recommend taking them.

Exodus Excellence!

What an amazing experience, from start to finish! Exodus kept us well informed leading up to the trip and upon arrival we received an itinerary and had evening next-day meetings which was great for understanding everything we’d need to do/timings etc. The admin team were great, the tour team were great. The hotel partners were also great – basically BRAVO. For anyone considering a group walking tour to the Amalfi Coast we’d highly recommend Exodus as although it can be done on your own – the knowledge your local Exodus guide imparts is second to none – we learnt so much about the history and the environment. There’s plenty of free time too so it was the perfect balance for us. Thank you everyone and we have already started looking at which holiday to choose next!!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking up and around Vesuvius - quite humbling and an amazing day out! Also seeing Furore Bridge and visiting the cove/inlet - absolutely beautiful (although not on the itinerary)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was amazing - we loved his enthusiasm, friendliness and local knowledge

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't over think it - just go with it and enjoy every second!

Walking the Amalfi Coast

An action packed trip visiting all the main attractions around the Amalfi coast.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the edge of Vesuvius.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nico was very knowledgeable, good fun and very helpful.

Great walking holiday!

As older walkers, on our first organised walking holiday, we weren’t sure whether we would be able to keep up with the youngsters. Pleased to say that some others were slower, and our various minor ailments didn’t stop us enjoying all the walks. The hotel was lovely and traditional and the family atmosphere shone through. The meals were good and the packed lunches substantial. The hotel BBQ was excellent! The walk up Vesuvius, the walk to Amalfi and the Walk of the Gods were all spectacular. A good holiday and we’ll be looking to do another one with you.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the rim of Vesuvius with no safety rails, but with a very experienced guide.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide for the week, Severio, was good and stretched us, although it took a couple of days to get used to him. He had excellent local knowledge, and his good connections meant that we experienced good coffee, ice cream, restaurants and the best specialist guides for Vesuvius and Pompeii.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Follow the training regime that Exodus provide - it certainly helped our fitness, and therefore the enjoyment of our holiday.

Suggestions

Some of the hotel reviews suggested the hotel was dated but we felt it was traditionally Italian and was a good standard for a 3 star hotel. We had no complaints and the staff were friendly and helpful. The Tiramisu and Pizza making evenings were good fun, breaking the ice.

A very enjoyable trip

The holiday is based in Bomerano-Agerola, up in the hills above Amalfi. This means it’s away from the tourist crowds of the coast and cooler as well. The hotel is a friendly family-run establishment with good, though fairly small rooms that, in places could do with some refurbishment (like the slightly odd and unreliable means of flushing the toilet!). Meals are provided in the large dining room and are mostly very good, though perhaps a bit heavy on carbohydrate. E.g. on one day we started with a pasta salad, followed by a pasta dish and then a main course containing potatoes. The walks are good, though the long descents on staircases became something of a joke in our group. There are some wonderful views and there is considerable variety from day to day.

Most Inspirational Moment

I had always wanted to visit Pompeii, so the day visiting Vesuvius and Pompeii was a highlight. The walk around the crater of Vesuvius was really special, though quite scary at times. I was glad of walking poles and strong boots. We all returned covered in grit and volcanic ash.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The guide was excellent in most respects. He had clearly taken time to explore the whole area very thoroughly and took us on paths that some of the other groups missed. He was very knowledgeable of the area and gave us sensible advice when there were options. E.g. he warned us that the island of Capri is very touristy so those who chose to visit on the day off knew what to expect (and still enjoyed it). His instructions to the group were not always as clear as they could have been, which led to confusion on a couple of occasions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

1. The trip notes advise long trousers for walking. There was only one walk (the walk to Amalfi) where the undergrowth, for a short distance, had the potential to scratch legs. The weather was too hot for long trousers and most of us walked quite happily in shorts. 2. The notes also advise proper walking boots and walking poles. In both cases I would strongly agree. Walking boots with ankle support help to protect against twisted ankles and worse on the uneven ground and walking poles support where the ground is unstable. Also, for those with weak knees (like me) up to 50% of your weight can be transferred to poles. 3. For anyone travelling, like us, by train to Italy this is an invaluable website: https://www.seat61.com/Italy.htm.

Suggestions

1. A fair amount of time was wasted on the first day collecting insurance details from the whole group. This could have been done by e-mail in advance and shared with the group leader. 2. There are a number of additional charges that, sometimes, seem a little illogical. Why provide a packed lunch on every walking day and not include the cost of this in the holiday on just one day? Why did we collect EUR10 for a tip to the driver on the Vesuvius/Pompeii day? 3. Although most people arrived on the same plane from Heathrow we were not the only ones to choose an alternative route (though the only ones to come by train all the way to Naples!). Exodus could do more to advise on alternative routes. For example, the hotel has copies of the Sita bus time table from Naples to Bomerano and could make this available via Exodus in advance. It took a little ingenuity and Google Translate to obtain a timetable from Sita! Once you have it the timetable is not easy for outsiders to understand.

Wonderful walking trip

This was our first organised walking trip. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with such an interesting group of people who were great company – they were inspiring and entertaining! The walks were accurately described in terms of difficulty and the scenery was stunning. Hotel Due Torri staff made us feel welcome and served us delicious, home cooked , authentic Italian food. The guides who led us up Vesuvius and round Pompeii were knowledgeable but imparted their knowledge in an interesting way, adding humour to their commentary. Our main guide, Veriano, who accompanied us every day was superb.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being taken to Veriano’s special places which were beautiful and serene.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was born and bred in the area and was therefore passionate about all aspects of our trip, from the stunning scenery to the local customs.. His extensive knowledge and great sense of humour made the trip informative and enjoyable. He was very patient when some of us occasionally struggled to keep up and was very encouraging. We were all sad to leave on the last day!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip info carefully. Take plenty of cash for tips. Check flight details up until the day of departure in case the departure terminal has changed - you will not automatically be notified by text or email.

Suggestions

This trip has left us wanting more! We are already looking to book another group walking trip with Exodus.

A great Italian coastal walking holiday

Stayed in the excellent family run Hotel Due Torri – lovely meals and friendly cookery demonstrations. Meals were lovely – food intolerances well catered for. Comfortable rooms, warm. Bomerano was good to walk from to Amalfi, Ravello and Positano. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday for us – first time with Exodus and being in a group; we woud definitely consider going with Exodus again.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many inspirational moments : the views; the other people in our group; the Italian food; the Path of the Gods; the trips to Vesuvius and Pompeii: I even inspired myself by keeping up with the walking and getting over leg aches and a blister.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was an affable guide whose local knowledge certainly added value to the trip - we found out more about local history, cuisine, nature and geology on the trips - just the right amount of information. Veriano did all he could to keep us safe, give clear information, good organisation and help everyone find what they wanted to do on the free day. He helped the group to gel and we appreciated his guiding.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walk down lots of steps before you go and be prepared for steep and rocky paths.

Suggestions

I loved it: a superb experience.
