Trails of Vietnam

Wow, full on Vietnam! This trip was great, if a little rushed at times. You get to see a lot of different areas of Vietnam, from rural villages to chaotic cities. Also many varied experiences such as religious sites, historical sites, walking, cycling, kayaking, boat trips, cooking class, local music and dance shows. Be prepared to be on the go most of the time.

My favourite part of the trip was the homestays. To experience local /rural life with friendly people is such a contrast to the chaotic, bustling cities

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cong was great and his English is excellent. He managed to keep a group of 15 all together and heading to the right places and excursions on time. The itinerary was very busy but ran smoothly thanks to Cong.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As the trip notes suggest these items are very useful: refillable water bottle, day pack (for shorter day trips), overnight bag (for 2 or 3 nights away from your main suitcase), sleeping bag liner (for the sleeper train & homestays), insect repellent, sun cream, small hand sanitiser. Personally I wouldn't pack (but this is up to each individual): cycle helmet (this is provided), walking boots (I was fine with walking trainers), sleeping bag (unless colder months).

Absolutely Fabulous!

If you want to learn about the culture and history of a country as well as seeing some spectacular scenery then this is for you. There is a lot of travelling involved and a few early morning departures (8:00am) but enough time for rest to compensate. Maybe a little more space in the mini-bus would have been nicer as the back 4 seats were a little cramped but there were plenty of breaks during the journeys to from Marrakech to Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fes, Merzouga, Skoura, Tigzha, Ouarzazate, Essaouira and back to Marrakech.

If you fancy something different here are two examples; 1) A camel ride onto the Sahara to watch the sunset, eat and sleep in a Bedouin Camp with some traditional music, up before dawn early for another camel ride to watch the sunrise then back to the hotel for breakfast, and 2) Two nights in a mountain retreat and a 4 hour morning walk in the High Atlas mountains.

Food was good and sometimes exceptional. All accommodation was acceptable and in some cases fantastic.

Our tour guide, Ahmed, and driver, Mustafa, were absolutely marvellous. My 15 travelling companions also contributed to the enjoyment of the holiday.

This was my first holiday of this type and I will certainly try another – most likely with Exodus. They obviously have years of experience organising holidays like this.

Most Inspirational Moment

I suppose the very most inspirational moment was the mountain retreat and a 4 hour morning walk in the High Atlas mountains.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes a few times so there are no surprises - although surprises can be good. So, just be prepared - although no preparation can be carried out for your first camel ride! LOL

Porto to Lisbon bike tour October 2019

It was a great tour along Atlantic coast with good weather, many good views, excellent guide and driver and great&fun group.

Most Inspirational Moment

The day we arrived in Nazarè with beautiful views of the ocean and of the beaches.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ruben (our guide) was great. Always smiling and having a good word for every person of the group. He supported the all group very efficiently and in a friendly/professional manner.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some bike training is recommended before to start the tour due to some hilly parts and eventually rent an e-bike to have full fun.

Rhinos and Deserts

A trip into the deserts of NW Namibia to experience the desert landscapes and wildlife. The emphasis was on desert adapted animals, before moving to the rich wildlife of Etosha later in the holiday. There is a lot of mileage covered, and some long days, but Namibia is a big country. The ability to go off road in a 4WD onto the gravel tracks and dunes when wild camping provided an atmosphere of adventure which you don’t get when staying on tarmac roads.

Most Inspirational Moment

I found the whole trip inspirational, by its very nature what you see on any particular day isn’t guaranteed, but watching 3 desert lions having an argument over the springbok they have just killed, and watching a cheetah gorging itself on its kill was riveting. I had hoped to see a black rhino and we saw one on the first evening, got out of the vehicle and sat and watched it, after that we saw black rhino every day we were in rhino areas. Watching desert elephants meet up in a canyon and just sitting around the campfire of an evening reflecting on the day, with the stars above and the desert around were also highlights.

Thoughts on Group Leader

PJ was an excellent group leader. He worked extremely hard to try and ensure we got as much out of the trip as possible. He had a good knowledge of plants, insects, birds and geology as well as the larger animals and tied in our wild life watching to the environment in which they lived. He worked hard, with the camp staff, (who were also excellent), to put a good meal on the table in camp every day, and let us know what was happening, what to look out for and review what we had seen and learnt about.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The Swakopmund extension, which we did was on the whole worthwhile, but we hadn’t worked out before hand that it is around a five hour drive there and back, so in fact it is only one day in the town itself.

Where the wild Things are.

I have just returned from this trip which was very good indeed. We were a very diverse group and I don’t think we were very easy for our leader Anthony but he coped very well with a difficult person and a demanding situation. H was helped by the crew Melo an excellent cook and Ronald and KT who worked so hard and were always kind and helpful.
We were all struggling with the tremendous heat and I would not recommend october as the best month. it was exceptionally hot, drinking hpt water was something we had to get used to, to keep from dehydration, very diddifcult indeed,
We had elephants in camp which was a treat and at night could hear the lions and hyeanas outside the tents. We saw numerous birds and wonderful lions also saw a cervil a real treat.
Dont expect it all to be easy but it is worth it.

Anthony was very capable in sometimes difficult circunstances.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Please take wet wipes because you cant always get the chance to wash, sunhats and scarves which can be soaked and wound round the neck in extreme heat. rehydration powders were very useful too. You dont need many clothes but as it is hot and sandy everything gets covered a few pairs of socks are good as they get very dirty. Just read the trip notes on clothing and that should be enough.

Wadi Rum and Petra cycling

We throughly enjoyed our cycling trip to Jordan. Gave us a fascinating insight into a completely different culture. Unique and amazing cultural sights and enjoyable cycling through stunning desert landscapes. Our guide was excellent and gave us so much information on Jordan. Hotels and food generally OK. Although we would recommend this trip it is more of a sightseeing tour with opportunities to cycle rather than a predominantly cycling trip. There is quite a bit of coach travel but this is well worth while to see the breath of the country covered by the trip.

Petra, floating in the Dead Sea and the overnight stay and jeep ride in the Wadi Rum.

Excellent. Very knowledgeable and keen to inform us on the country. Worked very hard to ensure we enjoyed our trip despite some issues that arose that were outside his control. Socialable and engaging with the whole group. Went that extra mile.b

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring Mosquito spray for the overnight stay in the Wadi Rum. Think about buying a Shemagh (traditional bedouin headdress), as well as being stylish it's very effective in keeping the sun off when walking around.

Magical mountains in Italy

This beautiful undiscovered corner of northern Tuscany was both a delight and a surprise, and especially gorgeous in all its autumn glory. If you love mountains and views come here. If you love trees, they make the walking even better. There are Medieval villages too and gorgeous local food and wine. Perhaps a little more strenuous than other grade 3 trips, but with a good pair of boots, walking poles, lovely Braccicorti cooking in your belly and the best guide ever, you will reach heights, literally, you hadn’t imagined. With two exceptions, all of our group were 60+ and it was all achievable and a good challenging mixture of climbs and descents (with a fine hostelry at the end in most cases!)
The walks were all interesting and varied in the amazing geography of Garfagnana with a brilliant day out to Lucca in the middle of the week. Don’t hesitate – just go there!

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing to the top of Monte Prado in clear warm weather in late October. The autumn colours of the beech trees, which extend to the tree line, were just beautiful - and catching a glimpse of a golden eagle on the way down. Walking up through the dappled light of the beech woods, knowing there were wild boar, deer and even wolves (higher up) unseen, but there nonetheless.

Sara is probably the best guide I have had the pleasure of walking with. Her love and knowledge of the area shines through as well as her vast skill and experience at getting the very best - plus a bit more - out of us motley crew. If I knew she was leading another trip (assuming the endurance levels were within my reach!) I would not hesitate to choose it. She went above and beyond to make two birthday celebrations on the final day most memorable - especially her home made cakes!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take good boots, definitely walking poles - and learn how to use them properly. Layers and rain protection. Late October was lovely and warm on most of the days, but a hat and fleece at the summit was welcome, even in bright sunshine. Leave your busy life behind and be ready to immerse yourself in the amazing peace of the mountains.

A fantastic trek and Machu Picchu

Memorable hike in the Andes without any other turist on the trek, fantastic valleys and mountains plus 1 day Inka trail reaching Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. This was an all-in-one trek.

After an Exhausting steep hike to 4600m ridge suddenly getting the first glimps of Mt. Veronika...wow!!!

Thanks to our leader, Fabrizio, I know much more about Peruvian life, culture and the Inka history.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Add an extra day in Cusco for acclimatisation just in case your flight is delayed or cancelled.

A wonderful trip

We have just returned from a lovely holiday. There was so much variety – safaris, whale watching, vineyards, penguins, wonderful natural coastal scenery, desert, mountains, history and so much more. The places we stayed were all lovely and different. Our guide, Petro, worked so hard to make sure the whole group enjoyed the holiday. She organised meals for us, told us when we needed to stock up on shopping and gave us good advice on extra excursions and got us up table mountain on the only day we could see it!

Most Inspirational Moment

It is very difficult to pick out one thing - the safari day on the first day was amazing - especially the optional second one which the whole group went on. Perhaps this should be included in the trip as it was so much better in the safari vehicles than the mini bus.The whale watching was excellent too. In a completely different way so was the township tour and showed something of the country which I don’t think we would have seen otherwise. Then there was all the amazing scenery .....

Thoughts on Group Leader

Petro was excellent. She was responsible for everything for 14 of us - driving the bus, explaining everything, making sure we got where we needed to be, making sure we had somewhere to eat in some really lovely and interesting places. She was very cheerful and always helpful and never complained.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to be flexible. There is such variety that plans may have to change. Temperatures are also very varied - more jumpers, long sleeved tops and a cosy jacket would have been useful. Although they are optional some of the best experiences were the optional excursions- the extra safari, whale watching, Robben Island, Table mountain, would have all been a shame to miss. Some extra time in Cape Town after the tour was very worthwhile as there is so much to see there.

Garden Route tour

The usual well-planned and well-organised Exodus trip. A varied and interesting tour in a beautiful country with amazing flora, fauna and spectacular scenery. The only disappointment for me was that in the trip notes, it stated it would be possible to visit a township on the morning before returning to the UK. The trip leader insisted this was not possible. The visit was arranged on the previous afternoon but by then I had already planned to do something else. This was a minor hiccup as I know from my many previous Exodus trips that a degree of flexibility is to be expected.Perhaps this needs amending in the notes to avoid misunderstandings.

Most Inspirational Moment

Gosh - too many to be able to choose just one but I suppose I did feel there seemed to be a genuine desire from both black and white individuals to make their system work.

Petro our group leader was amazing. Hard working, competent and knowledgeable about her wonderful country. Unfailingly cheerful and nothing too much trouble. Just a point, but I think her South African travel agency could have a hands free PA system in the vehicle. Quite alarming to see Petro trying to manoeuvre the minibus around hair-raising bends and mountain roads with one hand while trying to give us as much information as possible.

Go with an open mind and enjoy this wonderful trip.
