Sri Lankan Highlights April 2019

Exodus does an excellent job in showcasing this jewel off the tip of India. This tour gives you the highlights of Sri Lanka in a short amount of time. The itinerary is varied with sightseeing, hiking, biking with a little down time thrown in. You do need a basic level of fitness even though this trip is rated 1.
Accomodations are mostly 3.5*. Super clean, friendly and unique accomodations.
The food at the hotels were plentiful and very good. Focus is on Curry and Rice dishes with many vegetarian options. Our guide Suresh directed.

The Elephant Safari, Lion Rock and biking were some of my favourite activities.
Sri Lanka is suited for all including families.

Most Inspirational Moment

I am not sure there was a moment. But the people of Sri Lanka are beautiful people. They are a kind and gentle people. It was lovely seeing the families including several babies at the temple. Families enjoying the beach together. The children running out to say hello to us when biking.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader Suresh was A-One! He was well organized but laid back. He imparted much information. A lovely man who is approachable, kind and funny. He truly made our trip wonderful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a great stepping stone before visiting India. You will have some of the influences without the craziness. Some level of fitness is required if you would like to bike, hike etc.. January and February are peak seasons. The off season of April was a wonderful time to travel. Not as many people and weather still pleasant. Sri Lanka has it all: Beaches, Temples, Elephants, Monkeys, Lion Rock, beautiful Scenery.

Brilliant!

Excellent rating for the leader and route. However a few hotels were damp and musty due to the early date of holiday. The first and last hotels were by far the best.

Most Inspirational Moment

Completing the whole trip without having to get in the support vehicle at any time! Cycling through rain, thunder and lightning on the last day to finish without any mishaps! My inspirational room mate who kept me going all week.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Inspirational, encouraging and very supportive. He went above and beyond the hours he needed to work. Very organised, kept us informed and organised as a group and brought us together. I would definitely book another holiday with the same guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Mind over muscle! You can achieve if you think you can - and train more than you think you need to. Enjoy yourself too - the week goes by too fast.

Sunshine and cycling with the wind behind us

Good cycling beside the Atlantic Ocean. Blue sky and sunshine with wind behind us. Lovely hotels, great beaches and lots of surf. Nice bikes, and fun cycling.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view of the Atlantic Ocean as we cycled, particularly if we came round a corner and saw it below us blue with the white surf and the cliffs ahead.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nino was great. Good leader. Assessed the Group on the first day, and let people go at their own pace, so if they wanted to race ahead they could but had to wait. Gave enough time for those of us who didn’t want to race to get our breath back before setting off again.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for 80 euro lunch kitty. It also paid for drinks at the cafe stops and saved a lot of time, and the picnics were great, as well as the buffet lunches we had. When they say there may be a point that vertigo sufferers may not like, don’t worry, you’ll be fine. I hate edges and drops, and it was ok. It was only one small part one day. There is a barrier at the worst bit. Only slightly hairy bit is coming down the road, with cars behind you. Just stay in the middle of the road and make them wait! We were given the option of going in the van to miss it out, but I’m glad I did it.

Excellent trip with a top guide, great walks and amazing food!

Truly memorable! One of the best group trips I have experienced as a result of an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, the amazing natural scenery, history and culture we experienced and the wonderful Due Torri hotel – and food! The other members of the group were all great fun and it was a joy to walk with them and swap tales over dinner in the evenings.

Most Inspirational Moment

Well... there were a few All of the walks were good: those with a view of the sea/ down the coast were great! Walking the path of the Gods was a special experience Optional visit to Herculaneum was great I loved Pompeii - and our guide (Fabio) brought it to life

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vania was amazing from start to finish! Her enthusiasm and sense of fun were catching and her ability to lead the group from the back, the front or the middle allowed everyone to walk at their own pace. Vania was relentless in her pursuit of ensuring we all had a great time - any minor issues were dealt with immediately and she was keen to ensure that everyone's needs were met. Really good company at breakfast or dinner - she didn't seem to get a minute to ourselves! Two of us were keen to do some extra walking on the 'day off' and Vania opted to come with us as it was a walk she hadn't yet done - of course, she ended up leading by default and even apologising that there wasn't a coffee stop en route! I would happily recommend Vania as a guide to anyone wanting to walk the Amalfi Coast.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring clothes for all weathers! We had fog on Vesuvius and temperatures can vary enormously from the top of a hill to sea level. Really, everything was taken care of in the trip notes, I think. However having seen a few people struggling in groups other than ours, it is definitely worth paying attention to the nature of this trip. It's mostly coastal walking, so LOTS of ups and downs - and most importantly, via many hundreds/ thousands of steps. Some of these steps are very uneven and there are a couple of walks where they seem a bit relentless for a while, but it's all worth it! The views they afford are incredible. My calves felt tired and a bit sore every morning (along with everyone else's except Vania's!) but were easy to walk off. Consider a trip to the hotel masseur - she's very good!

Brilliant trip - would definitely recommend

Undiscovered Atlas was a brilliant trip. 5 days without internet or phone reception, and just endless, beautiful scenery. Lahcen was a brilliant guide, and the chef Hassan whipped up amazing meals in the middle of nowhere. I definitely didn’t expect 3 course lunches and dinners which were all superb.

The walking was great, really varied landscapes, and there was a great sense of achievement at the end of the day when we made it to the camp.

Whilst it was April, the weather was definitely changeable, with thermals needed one day, and the next hats and suncream. Make sure you take clothes for all weathers. Views were spectacular, so a good camera is definitely worth taking along.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was a great team spirit, which made the whole tip extremely enjoyable, and lots of memories I won't be forgetting any time soon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lahcen was a brilliant team leader; knowledgeable, interesting, funny and concerned for all of us when we were walking.

Amazing Adventure

This trip more than satisfied my curiosity and interest in Albania. We cycled in lots of different regions facing different countries and seeing Albania in all its beauty. Each day offered a different type of ride, the scenery forever changing and the views always spectacular and breath-taking.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing just how beautiful Albania is on so many levels. I felt honoured to have been able to get a glimpse of a country that has just opened its doors to the outside world. Everything from my perspective looked unspoilt and natural. People were really friendly and cheered us on along our journey.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Erlis was an amazing group leader and had a lot of work to do making sure we were all OK. I loved the way he spent time explaining things and helped me to understand the history of Albania from his own perspective and how it had affected his upbringing. Both him and our driver were really supportive and helpful at all times making sure we were OK, had enough to drink and kept us entertained especially when we or rather I struggled up some of those continuous hills that never seemed to end.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go as soon as you get the opportunity. Make sure you have a good pair(s) of shorts as you will be in the saddle for a long time. I brought a pair for each day of cycling and was happy they were well padded as I really needed them to be for the sake of my sanity!!!

A marvellous trip crammed into a week

A wonderful trip with a fabulous guide and great travel companions. I wasn’t sure about doing a tour as I usually travel independently. This time, I didn’t have time to plan logistics, learn Arabic (though most do speak some English), or manage/research all the destinations, and I only had a week of time off, so I decided to try a pre-organised trip with Exodus to a place I’ve always wanted to visit. So glad I did.

I learnt about Roman cities by walking amongst the pillars, I marvelled at mosaics away from the distractions of the 9-5, I climbed up rocky out-crops formed of incredible reds and oranges, I learned about the Nabateans and the Mamlucs and the Bedouin and the history or a tumultous region steeped in history for thousands of years. Not only do you get to explore Petra and Wadi Rum, float in the Dead Sea, snorkel in the Red Sea, admire Jerash and Madaba and Karak Castle and the flowers in the desert (in April) (thanks to our guide for hunting out the end of season black irises), but you get to taste local food (delicious Shawarma and Falafel) sip delicious mint concoctions, and hear about day-to-day life in world full of refugees, intense politics, history and conflict on all sides. Things come to life when you are in the landscape. Thank you.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sitting on a sand dune in the desert of Wadi Rum watching the light change.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fabulous group leader - highly recommend Jihad.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Really look at the weather forecast before you go. It can be cold and wet in Jordan (North and Middle) in Spring, even though it will also be hot in Aqaba, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea.

Springtime with Severio

The variety of experiences, from steep climbs down steps hewn into the hillsides to walking the rim of Vesuvius or marvelling at the mosaics of Herculaneum, made this a memorable trip.
Our group, christened ‘the joyful’ by our leader, contained an assortment of Britons (including Scots), a couple from Sydney and another pair from California. We all enjoyed each other’s company, avoiding the clique-forming which can occur within a group, and all choosing to eat out in a restaurant together on our day off.
The hotel staff at Due Torri were attentive, friendly and helpful and the food was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

The thunderstorm and drenching rain which struck while we were walking the Way of the Gods was pretty awesome, as was making it to the scheduled lunch stop later that day! I loved the visits to Pompeii and Herculaneum: so extraordinary to see every day items, along with beautiful art that has survived for two thousand years.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio is an exceptional leader, knowing exactly how to get the best out of every team member and appraising both individuals and situations with skill and patience. His enthusiasm never appears to wane, however many times he must have gone over the same ground. I must also praise his kindness: having returned home and realising I had mislaid one of my purchases, I contacted Seve to see if he could help. He went back to Amalfi, sought out a replacement item, then posted it to me in the UK, entirely at his own expense of time and money. That must be way beyond anything that the job description requires!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do go prepared for all kinds of weather conditions on the Amalfi coast. Warm weather clothing may be needed, even in Spring and Summer.

Walking Amalfi coast

I think people should be warned more about how strenuous the walks are if people are not fit…
the trip is rated as moderate fitness, but moderate to a young fit person is not the same as someone older or not as fit.
All participants should be advised that they MUST where appropriate walking boots to improve grip on unpredictable ground.

Most Inspirational Moment

Team work, helping each other, looking out for each other.... being considerate of others around us and being so grateful for this opportunity in life to visit such a beautiful part of the world.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was very relaxed and laid back. Good help and advice when we needed him. Very sociable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Wear good walking shoes. Get fit before you go, do the exercises Exodus send in the itinery.

Tailormade a week in Jordan

A week in Jordan
fly into Amman and transferred to a hotel for the night then travel along the kings highway towards Petra via Mt Nebo , Madaba and Kerak.
Two full days to explore the sights of Petra
visit little Petra
quick visit to Aquaba (for supplies )
Wadi Rum desert, four wheel drive and two nights in Bedouin camp along with one day hiking through the desert.
visit and swim in the dead sea staying at a 4 star (5 star I think ) hotel

Most Inspirational Moment

I cant single one inspirational moment as they all were but if I really had to then it would be the sunset in the desert Wadi Rum

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ibrahim was fantastic from the moment he picked us up at the airport till the moment he dropped us off there he looked after us really well. Anything we wanted he was there for us. he gave us all the information and more that we needed to complete our trip. He made sure every guide we had was the best and helped us understand the countries customs and language. I would absolutely recommend him to any of my friends that are planning to visit Jordan

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes please do not think of Jordan as a country in the middle east or in an area of trouble as it is so much more than that. It has a very western European outlook and the people are so friendly and they actually believe they are half English and have Jordanian. Our trip has open all of our eyes to a completely different view of the middle east. go and see for yourselves I promise you , you will be blown away with how friendly and open this country really is.
