A week in Jordan

A busy and hugely varied week in Jordan. Every day we did something and saw something new – I loved the variety of the holiday and the different experiences you can have in such a short time in relatively small country

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many - but seeing Petra for the first time really was amazing. And we all loved it despite the freezing weather! Also getting a sense for the dramatic scenery of Jordan in the hills - this was something i wasn't really expecting, but the scenery was absolutely outstanding.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Zahair was a good leader. He was ill during the middle of our trip, which was unfortunate, but overall his passion for his country and his pride in it shone through.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If travelling in the winter months, bring plenty of warm clothes. A sleeping bag for the night at Wadi rum is essential (not optional as the trip notes suggest!).

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling on sandy tracks through the jungle alongside the walls of the ancient temples around Angkor away with monkeys watching our every move. A real mix of straight roads, paddy fields, jungles, history and cities.

An outstanding experience, exceptionally organised!

This was truly an incredible experience, with great attention to detail in the organisation, health and safety of the group. From the beauty of the mountain range to the knowledge shared by the expedition leader, the Everest Base Camp trek is definitely worth doing!
The tea-houses were basic in nature (as you would expect), but don’t let that deter you as they are very comfortable with an extensive food and drinks menu. The locals are also very helpful and generous! Our group was managed by a leader and 3 other guides, so everyone was looked after.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational moments were not just the epic views and getting to EBC, but speaking to the locals at the tea-houses. In particular, we met a sherpa called Passang, who has summited Everest 8 times to date. His stories (although insane), really put Everest in perspective - how tough it is and what attracts people to summit this magnificent mountain.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Shailesh was an outstanding group leader, we were definitely lucky to have him. I'd go so far as to say we have made a new friend. He was kind, respectful and took your health very seriously. Being ex-military, we were in safe hands.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You are very likely to suffer symptoms of altitude sickness on this trek, but managed correctly and these will be significantly minimised. The expedition leader does carry out daily checks on your health and wellbeing and will do the best possible to get you to EBC. Please do take AMS seriously, get the correct medication and seek good advice about its use before you go - fatalities (although rare) can occur. The trek is physically and mentally challenging, so DEFINITELY train, don't expect this to be a walk in the park. If you're generally fit and active, along with positive attitude, you will have the best time!

The Amalfi coast over Christmas

Had a great trip to the Amalfi coast over Christmas – the scenery was amazing and the walks fantastic. Really amazing scenery and such a photogenic place. Hotel was good (although room for sharing a little small and not really cleaned every day). The walks were really great and a good pace and a little tough for some people who probably weren’t at a suitable level of fitness. The hotel food was really excellent with a great Chef who produced different and plentiful food every day. Was fun watching him cook pizza and other dishes. the hotel family owned and all staff were so friendly and helpful. The only problem I had was getting home as the BA flight was full so I had to take Easyjet and they cancelled my flight and it took almost 2 days to get home – nonone really helped so it was a nightmare!

Most Inspirational Moment

The amazing hike along the Amalifi coastline - especially the first day when we walked from the hotel to Amalfi.

Severio was a great group leader, very warm and friendly and ready to help.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some of the walks a little tough for some people and recommend a good level of fitness or the pace gets slower and have to wait for the ones who can't keep up which was annoying for some of the group. If you go over Christmas/New Year book flights in good time and preferably go with the recommended airline BA and let the company book as since I booked a little late this flight was full and I had to book my own flight which turned out to be a nightmare and Exodus won't help if flight cancelled etc.

Brilliant time in Italy

We had a brilliant week, cross country skiing in Italy. Unfortunately there was not much snow, and it didn’t snow while we were there, but artificial snow had been laid for the tracks so we were still able to ski as planned, just not in as many different places.
The hotel was lovely and the food was really good.
We had good leaders who made every effort to find good tracks to ski, and who helped us all to improve our skills, and the company all week was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was a good mix of people in the group, and everyone gelled together really well. It was great soon after we arrived to watch the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree by Nonna, with real candles! Only a whole heap of snow would have made it better.

Andy was the leader of our group, and he helped everyone to improve their cross country skiing. He went out of his way to find decent tracks, not helped by the weather!

Advice for Potential Travellers

These days Christmas time is too early to have anthing like a guarantee of snow in this part of the Alps.

Sri Lanka -Cycling Tour

Very enjoyable tour of Sri Lanka, fabulous scenery and lot of distance and varying scenery over 2 weeks.

Safari tour and seeing wild life, elephants, crocodiles, sloth bear, etc.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Group leader, Suresh, gave a great introduction to Sri Lanka and created a lovely group atmosphere from the outset. He brought us to many local spots that we would never visit as a tourist. His upbeat, happy personality worked its way through the group. He went out of his way many times to ensure that everyone's needs were looked after and 'No' was not part of his vocabulary.

Bring a gel saddle if you are not saddle fit!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Driving on Xmas Day in the heavy snow and blue skies from Zion to Bryce Canyon. The amazing views got even better in the snow! It was my first white Xmas as well.

He was kind, friendly, courteous and professional.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The tour does not leave much time to explore San Francisco and Las Vegas. I recommend arriving a few days before and/or staying a few days after the tour ends for city sightseeing.

Wild and wonderful

Just back from an amazing way to spend New Year. I was slightly hesitant that skiing may not be my thing but it’s so accessible to get involved even for the complete novice. What great fun…I’ve never fallen over so many times and my knees are still bruised but it was worth it!
The lodge and the couple running it were so hospitable, the facilities simple Scandi ‘hygge’ and there was nothing more pleasant than a hot sauna to warm up in at the end of a day in the cold. As a veggie, I was also pleased with the care and attention to providing protein rich options for dinner – the food was hearty and wholesome.

Most Inspirational Moment

As an absolute beginner, staying upright on a small slope was an amazing feat. Snowshoeing up to the top of the plateau and seeing the wilderness for miles around Spending New Year in the snowy wilds and with such great people!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Illse and Mary were really great at coaching us in less than favourable conditions and keeping the options open to all abilities and inclinations for activity. They also provide evening 'entertainment'..but I will keep the content a surprise!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely take the advice of others and pack a bottle or buy supplies in the duty free at Oslo when you land. Drinks are available at the Lodge with high Norwegian tax added! I packed way too much, inside the lodge is super warm and cosy so a t-shirt is fine. Cosy boots useful for traversing between lodge and sleeping hut as are some sort of mini-crampon overshoe as it can be an ice-rink out there! Bring an extra towel you can use in the sauna...bikini's too if you don't fancy going native. A flask and sit mat are essential but you can borrow one if you forget them. Extra snacks are good to pack for when you need a burst of energy out on trail Hiking clothes are perfect unless you're extra sensitive to cold. I just wore merino long johns with trousers over the top and a couple of merino base layers, a wind proof top and a lightweight hard shell.
