Beautiful Albania!

Had read the reviews before going and it lived up to expectations!
Fab scenery, food and great cycles!

Most Inspirational Moment

Staying on the bike and not taking the van!!! Was not always on the bike ( especially on the last day)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Arian ( ? Correct spelling) cycled with us every day. He was initially quiet and reserved but as the trip progressed he was more relaxed and really looked after us very well. Just a lovely guy! Armaund was very organised and everything went smoothly!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I have done about 7 to 8 moderate trips!! In my opinion this was a Challenging trip. Doing 2 cycles (what I did) is not enough preparation for this trip!! PLEASE do HILLS before you go!!!

Corsica Mountains

This trip exceeded my expectations. We were fortunate to have a wonderful guide who had an eye on everyone and their capabilities so that we all had a fabulous time. Our group was excellent and the village we stayed in was great. The hotel was rustic but in a lovely position – you don’t go on a walking holiday to sit in your room!

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the one day on the GR20. We were lucky to have a clear day with amazing views when we made the summit of Bocca Palmentu and the use of the wonderful train to access the start and finish of the walks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alexis was an excellent guide, very quickly evaluated all our capabilities and adapted the walks to suit. He made the tour great fun with his wonderful sense of humour. Would very much like to have him guide on another trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It can be wet but we were lucky to only have a torrential downpour leaving a bar to walk back to the hotel. So wet gear could be needed. Some of the walks are rough and steep.

Cycling in Namibia

Namibia would not be my number ever travel destination as much of the country is ordinary and the distances between the highlights are too long. That said don’t dismiss it. The two things that most fascinated me was the seeming harmony between all the races and tribes, compared with just over the border in South Africa and the maintenance of a significant German influence in both architecture (old and new) and language. And for the latter it is over a 100 years since it was a German colony.

Most Inspirational Moment

The day I enjoyed most was mouching around Swakapmund soaking up the atmosphere and talking to locals and tourists alike.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The whole support crew (3) were excellent in their own very different ways. They obviously got on like a house on fire with each other and this helped create a very sociable atmosphere.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect gravelly roads and camping, not glamping.

Walking in Tuscany (challenging)

A well planned weeks holiday taking in the high peaks of Garfagnana Tuscany.

Havng walked in the area for a week finally recognising the Dead Mans Belly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Iif you need to catch the train from Pisa to Braccicorti it is easy to do. Pisa train station is a 5 minute walk from the airport. The trains are frequent and modern. On arrival at the local station the taxi driver , who you would contact, lived in Glasgow for 25 years.

Walking in Las Alpujarras

This was a nice week and a good choice for an easy walking holiday in Europe early in the year.

Most Inspirational Moment

I can't think of anything inspirational but it was a pleasant trip - the walks and scenery got better and better as the week progressed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

At first I was surprised to be met at the airport by an English tour guide but he was great - very knowledgeable about the area and always helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Despite the name of this tour, don't expect to be walking in the Sierra Nevada mountains (it's the foothills), and only expect half a day in Granada!

Walking and More in Albania

This trip offers a combination of (fairly serious) walking and culture, and as such might be slightly mis-named, in that the walking is concentrated at the start and the trip then becomes more of a mix – this is worth pointing out in case you are expecting heavy duty walking every day. It didn’t bother me though, I loved the mix and exploring this fascinating country still struggling with its new freedom whilst also giving the old legs a bit of a stretch. There’s a fair bit of travelling around, but nothing too serious, and I found the day trip into Kosovo provided an extra dimension.

Most Inspirational Moment

Two things - the sense of achievement on reaching the summit of the mountain pass, which provided a rewarding view for the considerable effort involved to get there, and connecting with the locals. Dorian, our guide, seemed to know someone wherever we went, and these contacts were free with their thoughts and feelings and didn't mind how many questions we asked them. They were also extremely free with the raki! These were experiences I seriously doubt I'd have got if solo travelling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dorien is a great guide, very eager to please, maybe even too eager. He could afford to relax more, maybe eat with the group, but he is always thinking about how to make the trip better. This a laudable aim, but for now let's enjoy it as it is!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely pack good walking boots and wet weather gear. Otherwise, no need to overdo it (as I did). Also, make sure you are relatively fit or you won't get the most out of the trip. Finally, to reiterate if you want to do 10 miles every day, this may not be the trip for you. If you want a mix, it is.

Rowing the Lower Zambezi 10.06.16

We canoed down the Lower Zambezi river a party of 8 with two guides Cuthbert & Ahmed – what a fantastic experience watching Hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, to name but a few of the animals we were able to see.
Both Cuthbert & Ahmed had so much knowledge and experience and could answer all our questions about the animals and the area and knew how to keep us safe.

There are too many to single one out - the scenery, the animals, the sunsets !

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was excellent and was extremely knowledgeable regarding the area and the animals and also our safety - he made our trip even more enjoyable with his hard work, information and humor.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it ! - Take a travel pillow with you. The rowing can be pretty easy or it can be quite tough depending on how strong the head wind is so I think you need a reasonable level of fitness & upper body strength.

An amazing adventure on the Zambezi

This trip far exceeded my expectations in every way. The wildlife encounters were amazing, hippos everywhere, crocs, birds, impala, kudus, waterbuck, buffalo etc etc. On the second day I was beginning to worry that I would not see an elephant, then they were everywhere and being on the water allowed us to see them from a different perspective as well as on foot, at the campsite and on 4 wheels.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many - falling asleep to the sounds of Africa and hippos 'laughing' - Rafting all the canoes together to cross the river with a group of elephants - Arriving at the fly site to be welcomed by countless elephants of all sizes having a drink ( far too many to fit in a photo) - Getting a new found respect for termites and learning about the little things that are easy to miss on the game walks - Watching the sun rise and set over the water - Waking to the sound of lions roaring at 5am even if we didn't see them

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cuthbert (CB) was brilliant his knowledge of everything was second to none, he had a great sense of humour and spent time getting to know everyone. He and Ahmed looked after us so well and whilst we set up the tents would have a fire lit and dinner cooking, they always seemed to overestimate how much food we needed, there was no chance of ever going hungry. Our safety was always priority and as well as pointing out the wildlife they were always ensuring we were all ok and quickly getting us out the way when hippo encounters became a bit too close for comfort.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a brilliant trip and I would recommend it without reservation, a few tips: - pack what you need for the first few days ready to grab as we arrived rather late at the river on the first day and sorting out luggage by torchlight can be a bit of a challenge before canoeing across the river in the dark. - I was a little apprehensive about the no toilets/ washing facilities during wild camping, it was not a problem at all and baby wipes became our version of a shower. - It does get cold at night so make sure you have enough warm clothes to sleep in - The wind can get up and was never in our favour which, particularly on the first day made it hard going

Wildlife heaven!

Saw so many hippo, crocs, elephants and a few buffalo in the 10 days! Hard paddling, especially the 1st day, but wonderful animals and scenery make it all so worthwhile!

Most Inspirational Moment

Sitting with Cuthbert our guide by the riverside in the dark, listening to 4 elephants drinking on the other side of the stream. Great noises, smells and a wonderful memory that will stay with me for years!

Cuthbert was wonderful! He did all the glory stuff though while Ahmed did the hard work, looking after us all and helping keep us well fed

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack all you need for the first 4 days in your carry on luggage. Otherwise you will re packing in the dark on the side of the river, by the light of your head torch, and you may miss something. Take lots of wet wipes, you will be horrified by the colour they turn as you wet wipe wash! Nights are COLD! Take warm clothes to sleep in, as the tents are single skin mosquito netting and the chill sets in at 3am! If you sleep cold take your own sleeping bag! No pillows are supplied either. Marshmallows would be a great thing to take, toasted over the fire once the cookings done. Hot chocolate sachets are something I would take next time. Tea coffee and orange squash are provided, if you want beer or coke etc, buy it at the shop when you stop after the airport.

Superb and varied trip in beautiful mountains and historic cities

This was our first trip to the Balkans and we were amazed how much we were able to see in just over a week. The country has recovered exceptionally well from a very tumultuous recent history, and we felt inspired by the warmth and enthusiasm of all the BiH people we met. The countryside is pristine, with absolutely no pollution, and the walking very varied and interesting.

We all loved Sarejevo and Mostar, both fascinating and sophisticated cities.

Most Inspirational Moment

The entire group of 15 reached the summit of Maglic. The ascent included a challenging stretch just below the summit, including some scrambling and a short stretch of via ferrata, but with guidance and support from the guides we all managed this without difficulty. Watching Euro football matches in the open air Fanzone in central Sarejevo was a great experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eldar was brilliant at everything. It would be difficult to find anyone who knows the mountains better, he's a great team leader, all the arrangements worked like clockwork, his communication was clear and unambiguous, and he was very patient with our constant questions (as none of us spoke any of the local languages). There appeared to be no problem he couldn't solve, including repairing my sunglasses, very professionally, when the lens fell out!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get as fit as possible before you go so that you can really enjoy the superb walking on this trip. Maglic is a bit of a challenge but more than worth the effort ... Take insect repellent as the pristine, unspoilt countryside is not at all polluted by insecticides. Don't be put off by this - it's beautiful with wonderful wild flowers everywhere. BiH gets very warm - take light clothes and plenty of sunscreen.
