Floods but no famine

A great cycling trip through the beautiful scenery of some less touristed areas of Sri Lanka. We started the trip with a whole week of very wet weather which did impact on the enjoyment of visiting some of the main cultural sites on the itinerary in that first week – and cycling very wet roads on bikes with no mudguards also challenged my love of being on two wheels! However in adversity the group bonded fast and our leader Suresh worked overtime to make sure we could make the best of the hand the weather gods had dealt us. When the rain finally stopped we were treated to some fantastic riding, scenic views and of course the warm smiles of the local population. A shame we didn’t have the good weather from the outset but all told I was still happier to be visiting Sri Lanka on a bike than on a bus. And by riding it meant I’d worked up a good appetite for the amazing buffets…!

Most Inspirational Moment

The advice given to me when early in the trip I highlighted that, during the monsoon rain, a leak in the roof of my accommodation was gently dripping onto my bed - "Move the bed sir". Simple, effective and a good reminder to put the little things in life into perspective!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh did a fantastic job. Organising everything ahead of time so that the trip ran like clockwork. Obstacles (like landslides and fallen trees) were avoided and the kettle was already at a rolling boil by the time we got to the local tea-stops along the way. The Ace up his sleeve however was to organise booze for us on Christmas Day which is an alcohol free day in Sri Lanka - Suresh knows how to keep his guests happy!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I enjoy my travel photography but my camera only made it out of the watertight safety of the support bus on a few occasions due not just to the rain but also to the hassle of carrying it whilst on the bike. If you are in to photography I would suggest you bring a watertight bar bag with you to fit onto the rental bike so you can keep your gear to hand without the need for a rucksack (too hot in the sun and too wet if you cycle through monsoon conditions). I may also be tempted to invest in a cheap waterproof camera so that I can continue clicking even when dripping!

Christmas walking in North Cyprus

Having had a busy year with house renovations, we left our holiday booking rather late. We always plump for warmth, we like islands, exploring and walking. Two years ago we managed a brief border crossing in Cyprus when visiting the old walled city. That was a highlight and so I was delighted when John suggested joining a guided walk in North Cyprus this year. The booking was simple, making us wonder if we had completed everything necessary. A few days later following phone calls to let us know things were in hand, our booking was confirmed. We were able to join the group flight to Ergo, transfers and accommodation were complete.
Everything fell into place, the hotel was excellent making an extra effort to give us a truly memorable Christmas.
Our group of 16 fellow walkers gelled really well and our Austrian leader ensured each day went smoothly.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fact that we received brilliant service throughout making every moment memorable and enjoyable. The itinerary, the transporting and consideration given by the leader and his driver, the timings i.e. lengths of walks and visits to places of interest and relaxation before evening meals were much appreciated enabling us to maximise our time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leaders commentaries were informed and interesting. The walking pace was good allowing time to take in the views, linger a little longer in the atmosphere of the many historic sites visited. Places to picnic were well chosen, picnics provided enjoyable. Attention to detail and to the group was excellent. On a day when we had the choice to please ourselves, the leader organised an extra trip and came with us each evening including Christmas day.

Advice for Potential Travellers

For a pair who enjoy meeting people but like to do their own thing, this was a first and we really enjoyed every minute.

Charles Marwood

Undoubtably the best way to see Cuba in two weeks. On a bike with excellent guides, like minded group members head from plain to mountain range, village to city and cathedral to desert island.

Most Inspirational Moment

Drinking fresh piña coladas, classic car rides in Havana, cycling into the Sierra maestria mountain range and leaving the town of Gibara of a perfect Caribbean morning.

Ichael was fantastic, funny, well organised and knowledgable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Approach this trip with an open mind, don't expect 5 star all the way, you're in Cuba. Embrace the dodgy busker, eclectic dining and Cuban culture. Take water bottles and sunscreen, toilet paper and insect repellent. It's not worth taking your own bike, the local bikes are fine for this trip, worth taking your own pedels and saddle if you have your own.

Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

A fun filled trip in a stunning part of Europe with excellent guides who made the most of the limited snow we experienced. Combining scenery, history, sightseeing and relaxing in the wellness centre, it was a lovely Christmas break.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the snow-filled trenches of the First World War, and the War Cemetery at Bruneck/Brunico. All of the stunning views of the Dolomites.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex and Simon were great guides - finding the best of the snow in challenging conditions. They were great fun too, and a were an integral part of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If it's icy, buy some mini-crampons. They are cheap and invaluable, and useful at home too.

Finnish Wilderness Week

An absolutely fabulous winter adventure spent in a log cabin in the most beautiful Finnish wilderness, with plentiful and delicious local food and a good variety of interesting winter activities, this is a trip not to be missed- if you love the outdoors and adventure, book now, you will not be disappointed!

Most Inspirational Moment

I particularly loved New Years Eve dog sledging with the huskies, the sun was just coming up and shining onto the snowy trees, so beautiful and peaceful and I will never forget it! In fact I loved it so much that I then chose to do a full day with the huskies. You drive your own husky team and led by Lauri the lovely owner of the huskies we stopped half way for lunch and sat on reindeer skins by a fire in the middle of the wilderness and ate Elk casserole and Finnish pudding, both delicious, cooked by his lovely wife before heading off again. I also loved building the quinzee ( a hollowed out pile of snow) with the team and then sleeping in it all night in -15! I loved the snow shoeing through stunning snowy forests and by raging rivers and exploring the frozen lake on cross country skis with a sunset and a mist on the lake. Too many amazing memories to mention!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bjorn (Teddy) was a brilliant leader, so friendly and welcoming right from the beginning and really shared in our enthusiasm for the activities and the great outdoors. He has a true passion for nature and the national park and really looked after us in every way. He was also very good at looking after everyone whatever their level of ability. Marty did the survival skills with us and was equally as lovely. All the staff at Basecamp are just so friendly and lovely and I cannot praise them highly enough.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice is to book this holiday! I have been on a lot of trips but this has for me surpassed them all. You get the opportunity to try lots of different activities and do more of those you enjoy. There is a fair bit of spare time when you can go off snow shoeing or cross country skiing and to use the sauna and outdoor hot tub (and roll in the snow Finnish style!) and its a good idea to take a book to read by the fire. It's a real chill out in the most wonderful scenery. You really don't need to take any winter clothes at all (apart from a base layer) as you get given them all and they are all clean and in good condition. Just take something warm to arrive and leave in and take casual evening wear with you. I really recommend you sleep all night in the quinzee, such a sense of achievement!

snowshoeing in the Dolomites

This was my first time traxelling with Exodus and I was very impressed by the efficiency of the trip.Despite the lack of snow for snowshoeing we all had a brilliant time walking in the breathtaking scenery. It felt great to reach the summit and see some wonderful views.

Definitely take lots of layers as it can be really hot one minute and cold the next.Also if lack of snow get grips for the bottom of your walking boots to avoid slipping on the ice !

Discover Chile

Great way to cover a lot of the country.
Not for the faint hearted. There are 5 internal flights. This means you are packing in a lot on every day and not really enough time to do any real justice.
Atacama and Patagonia were must sees. The lake District was disappointing. I would recommend taking out if this stayed as a 14 day holiday and add to Patagonia and/or Atacama. However keep if ever to go to 21 days.

Christmas Eve with a clear view of Torres del Paine while eating our Xmas meal (which they celebrate on Christmas Eve). Penguins (unfortunately not on the island in Megallan Straight) Flamingos in the Atacama. Night sky in Atacama

Thoughts on Group Leader

Charming and helpful but was obviously a trekking Leader and looked out of sorts trying to work out what to do with us at times as it was a non-trekking holiday. Most of us wanted to stretch our legs instead of short 15 mins pointless walks. I believe he was brought in at last moment as a standby.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Look at number of internal flights and work out if you could make better use of your time by booking an alternative holiday. If you want to go to Easter Island book a LONG time in advance (8-9 months especially over Christmas and New Year). Most of people that went there booked it separately from the trip. If you book your onward flights separately then allow for delays with internal flights Many of the options are now integral with the new brochure as what is the point going if you don't get to see some of the major optional high-lights Be warned. Some options are weather dependent with a reasonable chance of cancellation (as both ours were, Penguin Island and Serrano Boat Trip). If you want some walking (even as long at 3 kms) then not really trip for you

Atlas Panorama

The stunning and varied scenery, the friendly Berber villagers, the tasty food came up to expectations and the mountain gite turned out better equipped and less basic. The days were sunny, warm (compared to home) and dry which was a lovely way to break up the winter. There was too much time in Marrakech for my liking and too little time walking compared to the trip notes and any other walking holiday I have been on, which was a bit of a disappointment.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were parts of the last days walk which although difficult in some ways at the time were also enjoyable for the sense of achievement at the end. Recent rains had made the streams swell and crossing difficult and a bit hairy but we all made it across. There was snow for a good hour or more on the outward end which made walking tricky and falling easy! but also a very beautiful and picturesque sight. Local kids coming up to chat and show their curiosity about us on one of the afternoons at the gite was noisy and chaotic at times but also special. The cook, coming up on 'dinner donkey' with our picnic lunches was also an experience

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan is a very experienced, calm, friendly, hard working man who looked after us all very well and was very knowledgeable and helpful. The staff at the gite have little English but are smiley and hospitable and will help when they can.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Winters especially in the mountains can be very cold and the gite is not heated other than having a heater in the room where we had our meals. Go prepared with layers for the day as well as for sleeping. The gite sells a small selection of chocolates/biscuits and crisps you may want to take something with you for the walks and if you have a sweet tooth. There was always fruit and no desserts for afters! If you like a drink you can buy some alcohol to take with you from Marrakech. Water and soft drinks are available to buy at the gite. The Hamam experience was not one to be repeated. It was not warm, let alone hot and we all shivered for much of the time. Do check if they have made improvements if you are going to go for it in the winter.

Amazing Country

Amazing country, fabulous campsites, dramatic scenery and great wildlife.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many, I cannot decide between sossousvlei sand dunes, sipping wine at the watering hole watching lions, cycling through the moon landscape, or watching dolphins and seals in a boat trip. Then their were the many beautiful sunsets.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great leader, flexed the trip to fit around the weather (scorching sunshine). They worked all hours to fix the bikes as they get a battering and cook us delicious meals.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared there may be some flex on the trip notes to account for the weather and also some early starts. Be prepared for some long transfers, although the early starts meant we slept through some of them. Take in the scenery, racing through it you will miss so much.
