A superb ascent of Kilimanjaro on the little-trekked Shira Route

Lava Tower, Kilimanjaro, Shira Route

Our route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, crossing the caldera of Shira Volcano before traversing beneath the southern icefields of Kibo, Kilimanjaro's highest volcano. We have eight days of trekking on Africa's highest mountain, an extra day added to the standard seven-day Shira climb, allowing maximum time for acclimatisation. This improves your chances of reaching the summit while allowing time to enjoy the variety of scenery in the different climatic zones. Other trekkers rarely use the route so we can really savour the immense wilderness of the Shira Plateau, with stunning views of the glaciers high above on the crater rim.

Please note the Kilimanjaro National Park tax is not included in the package price.

What makes this trip responsible?

Responsible Travel

Tanzania Porter Education Project
During the long rains (April-June), the non-trekking season, Exodus supports a project to teach English to its porters and other local staff. Being able to converse with clients in English is an essential skill and this successful initiative has enabled porters to become cooks, assistant guides and even chief guides. With your support our aim is to develop this programme further in the future and provide continued education to our porters during times when work is limited. These skills can also help with employment opportunities for our guides, who can also work as teachers and/or classroom assistants.
