Following the northernmost tip of the Mediterranean, this self-guided cycle ride takes you through three countries in one week! Starting in Venice, the route heads eastwards, hugging the beautiful golden beaches of the Adriatic coast. Heading into the region of Friuli, you will pass sleepy fishing communes and the fascinating star-shaped city of Palmanova before turning south. Crossing the borders of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, it is hard to find a more fascinating concentration of culture anywhere else along the Adriatic.

  • Day 1

    Start Mestre, the mainland of Venice

    Your trip begins at your hotel in Mestre (the mainland of Venice). At around 6pm a representative will deliver the hire bikes to the hotel and go through the details of the trip. It is important to attend this as it will be your opportunity to check the bikes are all set up correctly and also to go over any questions you have about the route.If you haven't already received your documents before departure you will find a welcome pack at your first hotel. At this point it is important to just check through all your documents and ask the representatives if you have any questions. If you cannot make this briefing, you will find your welcome pack at reception and your bike in the garage.

    If you have arrived early enough, it is very easy to catch the bus to Venice (approx. 15min). Venice, also known as the 'floating city', needs little introduction. If you have time, make sure you visit the Basilica of San Marco and Doge's palace. We can help you book pre or post-tour accommodation should you wish to take more time to explore this wonderful city; if you can take the time this is something we would strongly recommend either before or after your trip.

  • Day 2

    Leave Venice by bike and vaporetto towards the city of Caorle; chance to swim in the sea en route

    Today is the first full day of cycling. Ride across the Ponte della Liberta, the bridge which connects Venice to the mainland and arrive at the ferry port which will take you to Punta Sabbioni to start the main part of today's ride. The ferry passes in front of the Piazza San Marco and gives a great view of Venice from the water - have your camera ready. From Punta Sabbioni you cycle towards Caorle. The first section of the ride is through pretty wetland, following canals which will then lead you back to the Adriatic Coast. On this last section of the ride there are many opportunities stop off for a dip in the sea. Caorle is a beautiful town with a historic centre made up of little houses painted in various colours and a cathedral with a curious cyclindrical bell tower.

    In high season the hotels get very busy so we have alternative hotel options for this evening: please check your hotel list to make sure you follow the instructions to the correct hotel. In some instances you may be staying in Jesolo, which will make your total distance 45km today (and will add the remainder to your journey tomorrow morning). In this area we use hotels on the coast and also in the town itself; if you are staying on the coast you will be able to take advantage of the beaches and you will cycle through Caorle town tomorrow morning so you will not miss out visiting this pretty town.

  • Day 3

    Leave the coast and pedal north towards an area known for its lagoons to reach the beautiful little town of Portogruaro

    Leaving Jesolo/Caorle the route heads north away from the Adriatic coast, following cycleways and quiet roads. You will pass numerous Valli da Pesca, which are stretches of lagoon that are enclosed by dykes for the use of fish farming. Along these lagoons you can also spot the famous Casoni constructions that are unique to this area. Made from cane these structures used to house families during the war but today are a favourite spot for fishermen. Your stop for this evening is in the impressive town of Portogruaro, a once dominant feature of the Serenissima republic of Venice. It is a lovely town, full of character with a leaning bell tower and watermills along the river which runs right through the town centre. The ride today is quite flat so you may find that you get through the distance quite quickly, if so you can then enjoy a relaxing drink in the town square or next to the river.

  • Day 4

    Continue to Palmanova and the ancient city of Aquileia. Lunch by the sea at Marano Lagunare is highly recommended

    Most of the journey today is spent in the midst of the plains of the eastern border between the region of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. This area is particularly recognised for its abundant waterways, canals, rivers and ancient Roman towns. Depending on availability, your stop for the night will either be in Aquileia or Palmanova. Each of the towns are as fascinating as the other, and if you are staying in Aquileia then the route gives you the option to extend your journey and visit Palmanova so you don't miss out. Alternatively, you can shorten the ride and not visit Palmanova: the notes give directions for both options. Again the riding is flat so you have plenty of time to fit in the longer route without rushing around. Aquileia famed for its many Roman excavations and has a beautiful church at its centre with an incredibly well preserved mosaic covering the floor. Palmanova is aptly named the 'starry city' due to the shape of the city resembling a 9-pointed star from the air. It is a remarkable structure and the town Piazza is a wonderful place to enjoy a drink in the sun.

    If you are staying in Palmanova, your cycling distance will be shorter today, but you will cover the distance to Aquileia in the morning, which will also give you the opportunity to look in the church.

  • Day 5

    Option of a beautiful ride to the lagoon port of Grad, then a more hilly coastal ride through Duino, Sistiana and Miramare; arrive at Trieste

    Today's ride begins with a highly recommended option to visit the lagoon port of Grado, reached by a long causeway. Beyond Grado another option is to visit the Valle Cavanata nature reserve, where the cycleway is right next to the sea.

    You then cross the river Isonzo, which holds huge historical significance as it was the setting for the infamous '12 battles of Isonzo' during the First World War. From here you head towards the sea once again, and on to the Gulf of Trieste. Before reaching Trieste itself there are numerous places to visit on the way such as Duino with its two castles, Sistiana with its fantastic bay and Miramare with its famous castle, built according to the wishes of the Hapsburg Emperor Maxmillian. Trieste itself is a vibrant city and has many impressive buildings and piazzas which date from when it was the only port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Be sure to visit the Piazza Unita d'Italia, said to be the largest waterside square in the world.

  • Day 6

    Time to explore impressive Trieste, then cross into Slovenia; pass through Koper and Piran before reaching the spa town of Portoroz

    After seeing more of Trieste in the morning you soon reach your first border, taking you into Slovenia. The cycling today is fantastic, there are some hills but also long stretches right next to the sea. The cycle path is often on the track of the old Parenzana railway which ran from Trieste to Pula. The route takes you through several popular resorts, one of which is Piran. Often described as an 'open-air museum', Piran's mediaeval architecture, rich cultural heritage and narrow streets gives this town its own special charm. It is worth planning some time to stop here so you can have a look around and enjoy its atmosphere. From here you will cycle just a few more kilometres on to Portoroz, which is famous for its spa and bathing facilities, the perfect antidote to a long day's ride. If your accommodation tonight is in Piran you will cycle through Portoroz tomorrow.

  • Day 7

    Cycle past the salt mines of Secovljie, then enter Croatia and tackle a few hills, passing the ancient port of Novigrad on the Istrian Coast before reaching Porec.

    With the Istrian Coast just around the corner, you now head towards Croatia. Before you arrive at the border you will pass the fascinating town of Secovlje. Once a thriving sea salt producing town, Secovlje now relies on tourism as its main source of income as the area of the salt lagoons has now become a nature park, attracting an array of migratory birds. Crossing the border into Croatia you have a climb to the attractivre old town of Buje and then coast down to Novigrad in time for coffee or lunch and to enjoy the holiday atmosphere of this pretty fishing town. The route then crosses a lagoon and climbs a little to Tar before a final downhill to Porec. It is worth aiming to arrive into Porec by early afternoon if you are catching the ferry in the morning as this will give you the chance to wander the narrow streets of the town and visit the UNESCO Euphrasian Basilica with its superb mosaics.

Eating and Drinking

The price includes 7 breakfasts, which are taken in the hotels.

Self-guided routes are perfect for making up picnics and then finding a lovely spot to enjoy your lunch. However, on this trip you will also find lots of cafes in the towns you pass through to enjoy a local lunch. As you are in Italy for much of the ride you will be able to stop for really good coffee in the morning to give you a boost. If you are going to buy things to make your own lunch, be aware that shops often close 12 - 3pm so don't get caught out.

This tour passes through different regions and three different states, so you will find a wide variety of dishes. However, fish will feature highly on many of the menus due to your proximity to the sea. On the coast you will find Italian 'sardine in saor' (sardines cooked in onions), and several dishes with mussels and clams. In Slovenia and Croatia there are the famous cevapcici (small spicy meatballs) and 'buzara' prawns. Do not miss the famous zaeti (cornmeal biscuits with raisins) and in Croatia the palacinche (sweet crepes). All served with good wines such as Prosecco or Teroldego.


In Veneto, Friuli and the Adriatic Coast in Slovenia and Croatia the temperatures are cool/mild in spring and autumn and warm/humid in summer, with potential summer storms. In Istria, and in general on the Adriatic Coast, the climate is milder in winter and always breezy because of the sea currents.

This is a self-guided cycling trip for those who like to cycle independently, but with back up to take out the hard work and planning. We arrange your accommodation, provide you with a map and route notes so that you can cycle at your own pace, while your bags are transported from one hotel to the next.

Average daily distance: 57km (35 miles). Please note that this is the average of the shortest distances, on most days there is the option to extend the rides, and in some instances the location of the hotels will make a difference to the total distance covered on a particular day.

Terrain and route: The terrain on the first 4 days is flat, mostly on quiet roads with some sections on gravel tracks. The last two days through Slovenia and Croatia are more undulating with a couple of challenging climbs. There are some sections where the route has to go on busier roads, but there is nearly always a public transport alternative to avoid this if you prefer.
Vehicle Support: Bags are transported from one hotel to the next by van.

It is important that you are happy reading maps and following route notes: we make these as accurate as possible and they are regularly checked. Where possible we stick to cycle tracks and quiet roads to make the journeys as pleasant as possible, but on occasion we have to use busier routes.

As this is a self-guided holiday there is no group and no leader. There may be others on the same departure date as you, but you will not be organised together. The routes notes include a emergency assistance telephone number should you need it and in emergencies, the hotels are normally able to dispatch a taxi or pick you up themselves. They may wish to charge for this service.

Self-guided cycling holidays are a perfect option for families as they offer the freedom for you to take your holiday at your own pace. You can stop as and when you want and need, at the cafes and restaurants that suit your family and the sites that interest you. As a guide we have suggested that 14 yrs is the minimum age for this trip, but as it is self-guided and you will be leading your own family we will ultimately leave this decision up to you. The daily distances are all published in the trip notes along with a description of each days cycling so you have a good idea of what to expect. However, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact one of our experts. The principle idea is that these holidays can be as flexible as you like, with logistical support but no group or leader to dictate the daily activities.

You will spend 7 nights in 3 star hotels. These include a variety of tourist-class hotels in cities and charming hotels in the countryside. All rooms have en suite facilities. Some cities charge a tourist tax. These taxes are not included in the sale price of the tour and must be paid directly by the customer at check in or check-out at the hotels. All prices are based on 2 persons sharing, so if there is an odd number of people travelling in your party or you are travelling alone, there will be a compulsory supplement for a single room for the tour duration.

    Cycle the Adriatic

    For anyone considering the idea of cycling this trip in September please consider that you will not see any great signs of life in the towns as they are coastal resorts that are out of season in September. Most nights were pretty dead and sometimes we even struggled finding anywhere open for an evening meal. We also spent many hours on main roads cycling without any pleasing scenery to keep us going or finding an open pizzeria for lunch! In general not the prettiest or liveliest trip that we have cycled (and we have completed about 10 cycling holidays) We would recommend the self guided Puglia trip way ahead of this one.

    Returning to Venice for 2 nights in a lovely hotel we booked ourselves

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Do not book in September as the areas that you cycle through are out of season and therefore dead!

    Exodus should remove their bookings for September along the Adriatic coast. The towns are dead and therefore the nights are dull! Sometimes it was even a struggle to find an open restaurant

    Venice to Porec self guided May/June 2017

    The best part of the trip was certainly being in Venice so do make sure that you book extra days to see this unique city. We spent 2 days here but could easily have filled 3 or 4 - visiting the islands, touring the Grand Canal by vaporetto and generally getting lost on foot. Our next favourite area was Porec - the last stop. We were surprised that the trip was graded 3 initially as the first 4 days were very flat but a good distance. The last 2 days had some sudden steep climbs which were tougher.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    We loved cycling into the beach town of Lido de Jesolo as cycling near the coast is a huge attraction.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Try not to stay in Hotel alla Botte, Portogruero as there is nothing around there but a noisy motorway. The town is 2km away and there are much nicer hotels in the town.

    Check and double check if you want double beds rather than twins.

    Mestre to Porec

    We enjoyed this self guided cycle trip.The first 3 days are totally flat with the hills starting after Trieste. The hotel in Mestre was not great, the room was small and stuffy room with ineffective air-conditioning. We agree with previous comments about the written instructions, they are too wordy and therefore difficult to follow. We gave up on them after the first day and used the maps provided and followed the arrows placed along the route.When that failed we backed up with the map app on the smartphone. I disagree with a previous review that said don't start in Mestre, as the ride across to to Venice is dangerous. For us it was a Sunday morning( little traffic) and on a cycle path most of the way, the view of the city is great and the only downside were the swarms of flies so essential to keep your mouth closed. Lido di Jesolo was fine (big resort) but Caorle is a much smaller, prettier town and we would have preferred to stay there. Portogruaro, nice hotel and small town. Alquilea , hotel not so great but fantastic Basilica with mosaic floors. Trieste is an interesting city but busy traffic. The route out is hilly but actually takes small backroads so wasn't as bad as expected.Into Slovenia, lovely lush farmland often on dedicated cycle track but with a few more hills ( some steep but short) we stayed in Portoroz which is a large resort, the hotel was fine but for us Piran would have been a much nicer place to spend the night as prettier and smaller. On into Croatia where the route is on a busier road at times but the coastal scenery was beautiful and the hotel in Porec was the most comfortable of the whole trip. We averaged about 40 miles a day so had usually arrived at the destination by mid afternoon giving us time to explore.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Cycling towards Venice and through lush farmland. The Basilica in Aquilea is well worth a look. Italian ice cream and fantastic fresh fish in the restaurants en route.

    What did you think of your group leader?

    We only encountered him once when the bikes were delivered to the hotel, so can't really comment. The luggage transfer was very efficient.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    The hire bikes were very good but the female bikes are more " sit up and beg" style. I asked to change to the bike given to men (as I prefer that cycling position) so ended up with a frame that was slightly too large as that was all they had. So women travellers.....check the style of the bike you prefer ( look more closely at the photos than I did!) and relay that to Exodus before you travel so hopefully you will get the best bike fit for you. Also mosquito repellant, antihistamine cream for bites is useful.

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Better accommodation in some places would definitely have improved the rating of this holiday for us.

    Venice to Porec

    Generally good trip. Scenery worth cycling through and routes good. Distances easily achieved. We found towns and villages along the way, so coffee and food was not a problem. Routes often used good quality cycle paths. Previous comments about unclean hotels not experienced. Most hotels excellent, although a couple were a bit old and cramped. We would recommend this trip.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Many other riders from several countries are doing this route with the same land agents and their company was great. Finding our way with the directions provided was sometimes a challenge but it was great when it worked.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    We always buy maps of an area before any departure and mark up the route, even if guided. This helps to show what is happening and especially helps when self guided routes are not totally correct. The trip was stated on the Exodus website as 100% on tarmac which we found to be incorrect, although trip notes stated some off road. At least the route maps provided showed off road sections. As we were not on mountain bikes we then used our own maps to detour round one or two long off road sections.

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    We agree with previous comments that in spite of (or maybe because) the land agent is providing tours for several companies, they did not always meet our expectations. This is a tough commercial world and other land agents would surely be willing to replace them. The website states some gentle ascents. On the last day there are some tough hills, which most people finished up walking.

    Just the right level of challenge

    Four days of flat cycling through Italy followed by more hilly terrain on the final two through Slovenia/Croatia. The scenery and little towns we passed through were delightful - we saw many areas you perhaps wouldn't ever have visited in isolation unless touring. Bikes and equipment provided were solid and in good condition.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    There were some really exceptional routes via bridges across water, and paths alongside the sea; and some very enjoyable downhill rides after tough climbs in Croatia and Slovenia. A restaurant called Valentino's in Portoguaro who served us, their sole customers, superb food very late on a Monday night, when we feared we'd go to bed hungry because we'd arrived so late!

    What did you think of your group leader?

    This was a self guided holiday, so the cycle route guides were effectively our leader! These instructions were mostly very good with maybe two or three lapses. Several groups seemed to miss the Grado turn-off because of ambiguous instructions - and oddly this detour alone was not described in full. We got lost leaving Aquileia, heading at right angles to the correct route despite our best efforts! And a couple of times the instructions lapsed into different languages which provided an extra challenge. We felt the quality of the instructions was a little inconsistent, and less detailed as we left Italy There also seemed to be less arrow-stickers posted. The baggage transfer between hotels was seamless, with no problems at all.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    A cycle mirror mounted on your left handlebar will help on the very skinny fast Italian roads where one has to cycle right in the gutter, with cars passing very close. I bought one over there but it wasn't as good as my small tilt-able mirror at home. Padded cycle shorts are essential and I was glad I took an extra padded cycle cover too. A simple compass might have helped when we felt we were very offtrack! We managed with the maps provided but they are not that detailed, and often don't reference the same road names as the instructions do, so if you are concerned about your routefinding abilities, it may be worth bringing your own detailed maps, or downloading a GPS app. I was very bitten badly the first few days by mosquitoes, never usually a problem for me. I was using Jungle formula for Northern Europe, strength 3 until I switched to my friend's stronger version with 50% DEET. It didn't seem to be possible to get very strong repellent in Italy, so recommend you take a killer formula with you. Lastly, we didn't do this but it might have been sensible to check out the first few steps of the next day's route and just get oriented re the right direction to set off, before putting the bikes to bed for the night.

    We added two days in Venice at the start of our trip, which I'd recommend.

    Before booking the trip, I'd never even contemplated a cycling holiday before.  Yes I am reasonably fit and I do a fair bit of cardio-vascular work at the gym, but I'd never really used my third or fouth hand BMX, which is still sitting in my kitchen gathering dust!  However I fancied trying something different and challenging myself a little, and I liked the idea of seeing 3 different countries in one trip away.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I completed over 80kms on the first day, much of it into a 14kph head-wind.  Yes I was tired, but it wasn't a struggle as I suspected it might be.  So, the beauty of this trip is that it is suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness who fancies a holiday that takes it some beautiful and ever-changing scenery, whilst at the same time keeping you fit!  I loved the freedom a self-guided cycling trip gives you - the ability to stop whenever and wherever you want, not being limited on the amount of time you stop somewhere & the option to go at your own pace.  Also the general quality of the hotels used was excellent and mostly central to the town (with the exception of Caorle) & the buffet breakfasts were enough to fill me up for the majority of the day.  The 27 speed bikes were of excellent quality and made the ride smooth and hassle-free. The waterproof paniers supplied were spacious and easy to attached and detatch, and the waterproof box on the front of the bike was exactly the right size for my camera.  The routes chosen generally avoided main roads, which was great if you're not a confident cyclist and also meant that you experienced the real heart and culture of each country, travelling on country roads through quaint little villages and pretty coastal towns.  My only negative comment is that the directions given were sometimes vague and ambiguous, resulting in us covering a vastly increased distance on the first day, not reaching our destination until 10pm, and not having any time to stop at any of the towns/villages on route.  We did get used to the way they were written and learned to interpret them accordingly as the trip went on, but there were still times we resorted to using a map and picking our own route to the next place named on our itinerary!  Also I would suggest that Piran would be a much nicer final destination on day 5 of the trip, instead of Portoroz.  It's only about 5/6kms away and is a much prettier town with a lot more to see.  Overall though, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I would definitely do it again.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Finding out that I was actually capable of cycling that sort of distance!The views down into Piran after covering a good few kilometres of cycling on winding uphill roads, which was starting to take it's toll on my knees!

    Cycle the Adriatic: Venice to Porec Self-Guided

    We were very disappointed with the accommodation generally. The rooms were very cramped, and several were not clean ie bathrooms and dirty socks found in room. Also burns in bed linen that had to be changed! It was our second time to use exodus and previously we were very satisfied with rooms. Some of the directions were difficult to follow I.e. Aroad had been closed and our map did not show this, although some people on the trip were aware of this.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    The actual cycling routes were outstanding! The people who were also on our trip were pleasant and good company although we were a self guided tour. The luggage transfer was also great, it was always awaiting us at the hotels with no problems.

    What did you think of your group leader?

    Didn't have one

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Be fit, as cycling was quite challenging. Don't overpack, as need to be organised each morning to move on

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Just disappointed with standard of accommodation, which we felt let us down and did affect the trip as a whole. Instead of looking forward each evening, we were apprehensive as to what was awaiting us! We were particularly disappointed with croation hotel, which was very basic and had no air con. It felt like a converted prison and especially at the end of the trip we were expecting something a little more luxurious. Also bathroom at this hotel was not ideal, rusty pipes and worn looking shower and washing facilities.

    We are very glad that Josephine enjoyed the cycling and the cycling routes throughout this trip, but we are very sorry to learn that she was disappointed with the trip accommodation. The properties on this trip are well located for the cycling route and combine friendly hospitality with good bike storage facilities which is essential for this trip. The hotels are normally well received, but we sincerely regret that Josephine’s experience was not so positive; we have raised this with the local operator to ensure that Josephine’s experience isn't repeated.

    The route notes take cyclists through the best areas of the region and although the notes are detailed and require some careful attention when following them, they are checked every season by our local partner. A briefing is given at the beginning of each trip to explain how best to use the notes and maps provided.

    Good cycling and sight seeing somewhat spoilt by too detailed and useless route guide though necessary maps saved the day . Many of us got lost coming out of Trieste. Three other cycling companies were using the same material and hotels. Start from Mestre a bad idea  

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Finding correct route in spite of the misleading route guide and meeting up with fellow-lost travellersVisiting Aquileia and castle at Duino en route 

    What did you think of your group leader?

    We were all self-led so found our own way. Unfortunately we didn't realise how important it was to spot thetiny route signs which was mentioned at the briefing - we learnt ! ....but at some important crossings thesesigns were missing

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Don't use the route guides - only use the maps - and also buy large scale maps beforehand and plot the route! Be prepared to ask for route directions in middle of cities - like Trieste - we did and found help - otherwisewe might still be there. 

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Don't cycle on causeway from Mestre to Venice - bad enough by rail.  Be careful getting from Mestre to railwaystation - not easy at all.This is our second Exodus cycling holiday where subcontractor was Girolibero  - person doing their guidesshould be replaced.Despite problems - it was an enjoyable tour good weather, mostly quiet lanes, though beware busy roads and maniac motorists

    I'd consider myself an avid cyclist.  This is my 3rd cycle tour and the 1st time I've booked through Exodus.  The route selected for the trip allowed us to cycle through some beautiful countryside and see some stunning scenery!!  I loved the opportunity to cycle through 3 different countries.  I was suprised and pleased to see so many nice, paved bicyle paths for us to cycle across.I will say that we struggled, almost daily, to follow the route directions given to us.  Some of the directions were more vague than I would have like.  The very first day we cycled, it took us almost 20 minutes to find the streets that were named in the route guide, in order for us to get out of the plaza.  In all fairness, there was some construction in the plaza that might not have been there when the directions were written, but unfortunately, we experienced this same frustration almost daily.  It seemed to be worse when leaving town.  After we got out of town, things were better.  The tour company had posted their "orange arrow" along the route to let us know we were going in the right direction.  I SO appreciated seeing those and wish there were more.  The hotels booked for us along the way were very disappointing!  They were at best, in my opinion, 2-3 star hotels.  For the most part, they were clean, but very old, offered little in the way of ammenties, and were not in prime locations.  The last hotel we were booked in, Hotel Pical, didn't even have air conditioning.  After cycling for 6 days in 95 degree weather, this was a HUGE disappointment.  We stayed in a couple of beach villages.  I would have LOVED to have been booked in a hotel on the beach, rather than in a quiet corner of town.

    This was a self-guided tour, so there was no group leader.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    If you take your own pedals, as I did, be forewarned there is noone at the last hotel to help you get them off.  Unfortunately, I was unable to get mine off and had to leave them on the bike.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.


What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London  

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.


2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination. 

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.


3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.


 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
