“There’s no bad time to visit South Africa, but there’s something special about whale-watching season, which runs from June to November in the Western Cape. On many of our trips, we visit Hermanus, which is one of the best places in the world to watch whales from the shore. Southern right whales come here in huge numbers to mate, but you can also see Bryde’s and humpbacks. ”

Which part of South Africa is best for a first-time visit?

For a first-time visit to South Africa, many combine Cape Town, the Garden Route and a safari region such as Kruger National Park. Cape Town is a natural start point, providing easy access to Table Mountain, Robben Island and the vineyards of the Cape Winelands. From there, travelling along the Garden Route offers the chance to experience coastal drama and inland contrasts, such as the Tsitsikamma forests, seasonal whale watching in Hermanus, and the ancient Cango Caves. Finally, a safari means spotting iconic African wildlife in its natural habitat, with Kruger National Park widely regarded as one of the best wildlife-watching destinations.

What are the must-visit places in South Africa?

South Africa is blessed with many ‘must-visit places’, all of which you can find on Exodus itineraries. For culture, head to the Mother City, Cape Town, an excellent base to explore the Cape Winelands, Cape Malay heritage in the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, and Robben Island. Elsewhere, the Garden Route is often named among the world’s great road trips, ideal for cyclists and coastal culture. For a safari thrill, Kruger National Park is considered among the top destinations in the world.

What wildlife can I see on a South Africa holiday with Exodus?

South Africa is generally considered one of the world’s great wildlife-watching destinations. With Exodus, you can visit Kruger National Park to scan the bush for lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos, as well as giraffes, zebras, hippos and antelope. Along the Garden Route, Addo Elephant National Park offers another classic safari setting, while Hermanus is renowned for seasonal whale watching. Near Cape Town, Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town adds a coastal twist, with African penguins waddling between granite boulders and the sea.

What makes South Africa different from other safari destinations?

On a small-group guided tour of South Africa, the wildlife is only the beginning. You can pair game drives in Kruger National Park or Addo Elephant National Park with Cape Town’s Table Mountain and V&A Waterfront, the vineyards of Stellenbosch, and the coastal drama of the Garden Route. That route alone allows you to visit the forests and suspension bridges of Tsitsikamma, the sandstone cliffs of Knysna Heads, the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn, and whale watching in Hermanus. Few destinations make it so easy to move from big cats to big skies, wine estates and wave-battered coastlines in one holiday.

What a great way to experience four different countries in one holiday. After a few days in Cape Town, we travelled north to Namibia then east to Botswana and Zimbabwe where our holiday ended. You are immersed in the local ways of the communities visited and the only way to do this is to travel by road.

Gail Madeley Cape Town to Victoria Falls – Hotel/Lodge

As a birdwatcher I know that nature doesn’t also show up just because you bought a ticket but, from the first moment, the wildlife of Kruger more than delivered. And so much of that was due to the guides Exodus booked inside the reserve, particularly Nhlamulo Nyalungu who always seemed to know where the action was.

The accommodation was great too and meals were superb, variety as well as quality with plenty of quantity. Rooms were clean and very spacious with access onto the lawn and pool without losing any sense of privacy.

Frances Sinclair Essential Kruger Safari

What an incredible experience from start to finish! This trip exceeded all our expectations.

Frank was an fantastic guide who made the whole trip run seamlessly, alongside incredible local wildlife experts who knew exactly where to go to give us the most extraordinary wildlife encounters. There are plenty of game drives at different times of the day, so we had plenty of opportunities to see different animals and experience the bush in different ways.

The accommodation was fantastic, full of character and incredibly comfortable with all our group’s rooms having a terrace out to the pool. And the food provided was delicious – with plenty of it!

Another real highlight was the Panorama Route, which completely took us by surprise. The scenery was breathtaking and added another incredible dimension to the trip.
