Adventure Holidays in Djibouti

Tours in Djibouti

Djibouti is a tiny East African country that packs a huge punch. Lonely Planet named it one of their top places to visit in 2018, and with good reason: its strange geological landscape tells a story of immense upheaval and nature in its most raw, extreme form.

Lake Assal epitomises this sense of life on the margins. The second saltiest place on the planet, this harsh saline environment signifies the start of the Great Rift Valley. The lake’s vivid blue waters are even more startling against a pure white fringe of glittering salt crystals and salt encrusted rocks, and beyond that, the black volcanic rocks of the lava field with the mountains beyond.

Yet, incredibly, life persists. From Lake Assal, the coast beckons, where the waters of the Gulf Aden and the Red Sea are saline but buoyant with creatures great and small. The greatest, of course, being Whale sharks.

Djibouti Adventure Holidays

In focus: Whale Sharks

Djibouti’s coast teems with life. In season, Whale sharks flock here and Djibouti is known to wildlife connoisseurs as the best place in the world to swim with these mighty, gentle giants. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the oceans, and whilst some places they are baited, in Djibouti you can enjoy your own private slice of marine heaven as you swim with these magnificent creatures. It’s like your own episode of Blue Planet.
