New to the Worldloppet circuit, this has to be one of its most beautiful.

This race has a good claim to be one of the most spectacular on the circuit. Though only given Worldloppet status in 2015, the Fossavatn was first run back in 1935 and has been attracting those looking for something different for many years. Against a backdrop of Iceland's West Fjords words like 'spectacular' and 'unique' spring to mind, yet don't quite do it justice. Led by Andy McKee our Fossavatn trip gives race fans the chance to explore one of Iceland's most beautiful regions whilst also having the chance to ski in the Blue Mountains near Reykjavik. There are few countries on earth like Iceland, making this a truly memorable experience.

Itinerary

London
to
London
  • Day 1

Fly to Keflavik; transfer to Reykjavik, evening ski in Blajfoll

We waste no time in getting out on skis. If flights go to schedule we aim to spend a few hours skiing in the Blafjoll area a short drive southwest of Reykjavik. We finish with a transfer back to our Reykjavik hotel.

    Meals included: Lunch
  • Day 2

A day skiing in the Blue Mountains

Our first full day will be spent skiing in the Blue Mountains, the same area we will hopefully have skied the night before, a wonderful area just a short drive from Reykjavik. As an introduction to skiing in Iceland this is certainly effective, composed as it is of sharp mountains and a vast lava plateau. Depending on conditions we may ski in Skalafell, another popular ski area in the Greater Reykjavik Area.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 3

    Ski in Skaftafell and Blafjoll

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 4

    Skiing in Isafjordur

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 5

    Skiing in Isafjordur

Isafjordur is the largest town in the Western Fjords or Westfjords as they are also known. The town has long depended on the fishing industry but its popularity, and that of the region, has grown in recent years thanks to the natural beauty provided by the mountaineous landscape and dozens of glistening fjords.

We will tailor our skiing here to suit the conditions, however there are events laid on in the run up to the race, such as a 25km race offering a great chance to test out parts of the course and hone our skills. Andy will ensure enough time is spent getting accustomed to the course and building confidence for the race.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 6

    Race registration and optional sightseeing.

Today is registration day, when we collect our bibs from the race organisers. The rest of the day is free to explore. Activities are available locally such as sea kayaking, and other tours of the area are also available through local providers. This is a great opportunity to see this beautiful part of the country.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 7

    Race day.

The day of the race needs no introduction. On completion there is a cake buffet laid on by the organisers, and in the evening there is an optional race party and meal with live music, providing ample opportunity to celebrate the acheivement. For those looking for a lower key ending to the week there is of course the chance to head out for a final meal in a local restaurant.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 8

    Drive to Keflavik.

The final day brings with it the drive back down south, one last chance to enjoy the stunning Icelandic scenery. We'll make an early start and stop en route for lunch before arriving early afternoon.

    Meals included: Breakfast

Essential Info

Visas

Iceland

No visa required for British passport holders.

Vaccinations

Iceland

There are no specific health risks.

Eating and Drinking

All breakfasts and 3 lunches are icluded in this trip. Breakfasts are buffet style, whilst the lunches we include are taken on the travel days. There are of course many restaurants in Reykjavik, whilst Isafjordur also has establishments serving a mixture of Icelandic and international cuisine.
Traditional Icelandic dishes consist of salmon, cod, lamb and puffin. Cafés in the old town are particularly cosy, packed with comfy chairs, and antique furniture, with wonderful selections of coffees, cakes and treats.

Weather

The country has a notoriously fickle climate, and on any day of the winter you may experience periods of sunshine alternating with short or long showers of snow, sleet or even rain. Away from the coast, in most winters, there is good snow cover for much of the season. Average daytime temperatures in Reykjavik are between 0º and -5º Celsius, and a few degrees colder on average in the Westfjords. In the interior it can be several degrees colder, and in windy weather, which is common, the wind-chill factor can be significant.

Is this trip for you?

Two distances are available to participants, the full 50km race or the 25km option. The course contains a few climbs and presents a worthwhile challenge to the confident skier. You should be at Grade 3, Intermediate level as a classic skier to take part in this race, and have a good level of fitness. In the days leading up to the race groups will get the opportunity to practise on most of the course. The Thursday of race week also sees a half marathon, covering the first 10km and the final 15km of the race course, and is a great way to prepare.
The route involves a tough first 15km as the tracks wind up from 290m in altitude up to 614m. This is followed by a long descent (approx 10km) before the next climb. The course then flattens out and is fairly gentle until the final climb up to Midfellshals. The final 7km are all flat or downhill allowing you to take in the scenery and achievement with the hard work done.
Your leader will ensure the group has as much time on skis as possible to get to grips with the conditions and the course.
Please ensure that your winter travel insurance covers you for ski racing. If you are unsure if your current policy includes this please call your insurance provider.

Iceland is well known for being a good spot to see the Northern Lights, and while this is not the focus of this trip, it would be an opportunity missed if we did not keep an eye out. Using the latest information on solar activity and local weather, we will be alive to any opportunities to head out and experience a display. As this is a natural phenomenon of course success cannot be guaranteed.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.

a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
