Morning and afternoon game drives in Bandhavgarh N.P. searching for Bengal tigers

Morning and afternoon game drives in Bandhavgarh N.P. searching for Bengal tigers. At only 437 sq. km. Bandhavgarh is one of the smaller National Parks and enjoys an impressive setting with a stunning cliff-top fort overlooking grasslands, birch forests and bamboo that provide cover for the plentiful indigenous wildlife. In common with many other parks, Bandhavgarh is home to a wide variety of game including leopard, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chital, jungle cat, wild pig and of course tiger. The healthy population of approximately 60-70 animals means that this park has the highest tiger density of any of India's reserves. Aside from the game and the tigers, the park also plays host to up to 150 species of birds including many on the migratory trail, such as the Steepe eagle. During our stay in this beautiful rugged national park the itinerary includes 9 games drives, plus one full day multi-route safari with photographic permission to maximise tiger sightings.

Morning game drives usually start at approx. 06:00 am and finish at approx. 10:30am. You are then free to relax and eat a late breakfast before the afternoon game drive, which begins at approx. 15:00 pm and finishes before dark.

Essential Info

Visas are required if you are British and for most other nationalities. For UK residents full details of the visa process can be found here Other nationalities should check with their travel agent or the relevant embassies.

If your trip visits Ladakh, in the very north of India, or Sikkim in the northeast, do not mention this on your Indian visa application. This can sometimes slow down or even cause the embassy to reject your visa.

When you reach immigration, you are required to pick up an immigration form. If you have an e-visa, ensure you stand in the correct queue - please follow the signs to the e-visa booth (in Delhi this is at the back of the immigration hall). You will need to fill out an additional form at the booth - please make sure that you have the details of your start hotel ready (these details can be found on your Final Joining Instructions).

There are no mandatory vaccination requirements. Recommended vaccinations are: Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A. The risk of malaria is slight but you may wish to consult your GP or travel health clinic for further advice. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for Dengue, and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Some of our India trips spend time at altitude. In regions over approx. 2000m, there is low to no risk of mosquito-borne diseases. For trips going to altitudes of over 3000m there is a risk of being affected by Acute Mountain Sickness. Our itineraries are designed to enable everyone to acclimatise to these altitudes, but you should be aware that it is still possible for you to be affected. Please see the TRIP NOTES for further information.

Eating and Drinking

All breakfasts and 6 dinners included. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and a water filter are available at the lodge. We recommend bringing a water bottle with you to refill, to cut down on the use of plastic bottles. If you are a vegetarian India is probably one of the best destinations to travel to with a wide range of dishes on offer.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided in the restaurant before your early morning game drive. Breakfast is usually taken at approximately 11:00 am, when you have returned from the morning game drive. Lunch is therefore not included, however, if you feel you need lunch before departing for the afternoon game drive (at approx. 14:30 pm), lunch is available at an extra cost (approx. £7-8). Snacks are also available.

During October/November and February/March/April the days are normally warm to hot and nights cool or mild. Humidity is very low and little or no rain can be expected. The evenings and early mornings can be surprisingly cool, so bring a jumper (scarf and warm gloves for winter departures) as well as sun hat, sun cream and sunglasses.

Is this trip for you?

Activity Level: 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) with a Safari rating of 5

This tour is not physically demanding, however there are a lot of very early morning starts as this is the best time to see tigers. There are some long days travelling, especially when taking the overnight train. The roads are generally pretty good in India, but local traffic and/or road damage after the monsoon can sometimes slow us down.

The management of national parks by the Indian authorities and the system for booking game drives has become very regulated. As a result, the number of jeeps that can now enter national parks has been reduced, and all game drives need to be booked and paid for much further in advance. In addition, we must provide a list of client names and passport details at the time of booking each game drive. Once game drives are booked, they are non‐refundable and name changes are not permitted. Due to these on‐going changes in the system, the following guidelines and conditions now apply to all bookings:

1) We cannot guarantee the operation of any departure until we have the necessary game drives secured. Our aim is to secure game drives from a variety of gates/zones as per the itinerary, but please be aware that this is subject to availability. The date at which we book the game drives will vary depending as to when the booking system allows us to do so for your departure.

2) It will sometimes be possible to book clients on to a departure of this tour after the game drives have been booked, but large supplements are likely to be incurred. If we have made initial game drive bookings for a departure we may need to wait until we have a further 3 or 4 clients ready to book before we can secure an additional jeep.

3) At the time of booking we will ask you for the standard Exodus deposit plus £400 towards the game drives as once these are booked, they are non‐refundable. If for any reason we are unable to secure the game drives and we have to cancel the trip, you will of course receive a full refund.

4) We want to encourage all clients to book this trip as far in advance as possible; we are confident that we should be able to secure the game drives needed on most occasions if clients book 4/5 months in advance of the departure date.

5) It is important that we have your correct passport details at the time of booking. If you end up travelling on a different passport it is imperative that you carry your old passport, or a photocopy of it, with you. If this isn't possible you will need a letter from the passport agency regarding the change of passport, specifying the details of the old passport and the details of the new passport issued.

We regret that these measures are necessary, but we are of course keen to ensure that we secure the game drives as early as possible and to ensure this we must work within the parameters of the Indian government's current systems.

Hotel and sleeper train

7 nights hotels, 1 night sleeper train.

At Bandhavgarh, we spend 6 nights at Nature Heritage Resort. Located in the tranquil surroundings of Bandhavgarh National Park, we stay in air-conditioned cottages, each with an ensuite bathroom and veranda. The resort also has a bar, a swimming pool, coffee shop and wi-fi. A laundry service is also available.

In Delhi, we spend 1 night at Ashok Country Resort, a comfortable hotel which also has a swimming pool.

Overnight Train Journeys - The overnight train from Katni to Delhi will be booked in 2-tier sleeper A/C (or 3-tier if 2-tier is not available). There are many excellent trains in India; however, the standard of seating and sleeping is not in line with European standards. All seats are pre-allocated at the time the tickets are issued, meaning that we cannot guarantee the whole group are together on the train: your leader will manage this as best as possible and will always check on you during the journey. Indian trains are safe to travel on but we recommend that you keep valuables with you at all times. Snacks are often offered on board (at an additional cost) but you may wish to purchase your own food prior to the journey. Whilst some trains have western-style facilities, the majority of services are equipped with squat toilets. Please note trains are sometimes delayed for reasons beyond our control, but we endeavour to minimise the impact of these delays on the overall itinerary.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
