A WEEK IN JORDAN

Visiting Jordan was a truly memorable experience with sights, sounds and experiences I will never forget.  The variety of what we did and saw, as well as, the show-stopping, awe-inspiring sights of Petra and the desert in  daylight and under a star-filled sky will stay with me forever.  A packed week which is a must for people looking for culture, history, variety, natural beauty, great food and lovely people! Jordan has it all!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many fantastic moments but without doubt, the most amazing was seeing the Treasury buliding at Petra for the first time having walked along the 1 kilometre beautiful canyon before emerging right infront of the Treasury.  The whole of Petra and the two days spend there were incredible.  Apart from Jerash, the desert and the dead sea experience, the other memorable experience was an afternoon spent on a sailing boot, swimming and snorkelling amongst thousands of fish and brightly coloured corals - and in sea so warm it was like being in a bath.  Beautiful!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sammi, our Group leader was fantastic.  He helped make the trip what it was.  He has an incredible knowledge and took time to explain so many aspects of Joran culture and way of life. He also guided us around all the sights and gave us a the background to everything we saw.  Above all though, he has a wicked sense of humour and took great pleasure in having fun with the guests. He was fun, very personable and engaged very well with all of the Group.  I would say that he is the perfect guide and the best one I have ever travelled with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take sturdy shoes for Petra - not necessary to take full walking boots.  Take something warm for the evenings as it can get a little chilly at times. Don't expect to drink alcohol wherever you go - it is a dry country and only the biggest hotels sell alcohol. Many of our meals were with soft drinks which was a surprise for those not expecting it. If you have time and can do it - add a few days on at the end of the trip to chill out in Aqaba - there's not a great deal there but to relax in the sun and by the Red Sea is great and there are a few very good hotels to choose from.

THE INCA TRAIL

An excellently run trip with lots of time to acclimatise.  Be under no illusions day 2 climbing up the steps to the top of Dead Womans pass is a killer, but so worth it when you get a glimpse of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate

Most Inspirational Moment

There are so many.  the group waiting for me to finally get to the top of Dead Womans pass before us all taking the final step together.  The first glimps of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate.  Sitting quietly imagining what it would have been like all that time.  Camping on what felt like the top of the world.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was great, very knowledgeable and helpful

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take walking poles, they are invaluable and can be picked up fairly inexpensively.  A saviour for tired legs and really helpful for all the down hill walking.

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

This was one of the most amazing trips i’ve done so far! Amazing scenery, people and a great company to do it with. Thank you!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many! I loved the small villages we passed through that had such happy children wanting to say hello and high five. I thought the temples in Cambodia were awe inspiring. The home stay was fantastic! The entire trip was amazing!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Are group leader was exactly what is required in a group of are size and willfulness. Authoritive when required, Caring and supportive when neccesary, Fun and amusing, but above all, very informative, social and instructive. Thanks Nee.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Enjoy the trip rather than thinking of the next destination. Its very easy to think about the next cycle stop and power through until all the cycling for the day is complete, with out actually enjoying the scenery, views, and place to its full extent. The holiday seems to go so quickly when you do this. Just slow down a little when passing through villages and gorgeous scenary and remember you can stop for photographs at anytime.

TREASURES OF SICILY

An island with so much to offer the visitor, a sunny climate, natural beauty, ancient relics and tasty food! Our enjoyment was enhanced by an obliging tour leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were treats in store every day and even when the weather interfered with plans the alternatives were also enjoyable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Salvo worked hard to share his love of his country in a way that appealed to us all.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Add a couple of days to the end of your trip to visit Piaza Almerina, the fantastic roman mosaics are inspirational, we are so glad that we went, I cannot think why such a splendid place is not on the tour, but as we went on our own it meant we could spend longer there which was a bonus.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

Jordan is a wonderful country. The trip packs all the main sights in yet still gives time to enjoy them. The trip emcompasses something for everyone. Beautiful sunny weather and blue skies and not too crowded either.

Most Inspirational Moment

I have always wanted to see Petra and it was just amazing. First sight was on the nightime event outside the Treasury which although short is a magical experience and well worth a first introduction. The next day was a full day sightseeing. Never realised it was such a massive site. The walk to the Treasury was fantastic and later in the day the walk to the monastery was equally as good. Breathtaking. My feet certainly ached at the end of the day. The second full day there involved the walk to the High Place and yet more time to soak up the atmosphere.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The tour leader was excellent. Very well informed and full of information about Jordan and the various places visited. Also just the right amount of information as well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just go and enjoy. Make sure you have good comfortable walking shoes for the two days in Petra and something to wear on your feet for the Dead Sea "float". Currency exchange is readily available but make sure you get small notes. They tend to like giving out 50 and 20 Dinar denominations which is equivalnet to £ 50 and £ 20. Country feels perfectly safe. Go now while tourist numbers are low. On our second day in Petra the place felt quite deserted. Even obtained pictures of the Treasury with no one else around. Probably don't go in summer as I would imagine it would be unbearable walking around Petra for a couple of days.

HIDDEN TREASURES OF JORDAN

A great holiday! Great archaeological sites, stunning views, good company, and an excellent tour guide (Zuhair). And GREAT FUN!

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting Petra, floating in the Dead Sea. Visiting the neolithic village near Little Petra, and Jerash. Visiting all the museums, Wadi Rum and the forts. Everything really.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Zuhair was very interesting and informative on Jordan past and present, with a good sense of humour. He tried hard to please everybody, and to go 'the extra mile' in taking us to places not included on the itinerary.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Eat at the Heef wa Reef in Amman, about 50 yards from the El Fanar Hotel. Very cheap and very tasty (esp. chicken and rice). Also did takeaway salads which are good to buy for next day's lunch.

SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

Spectacular holiday made very special by the company present

Most Inspirational Moment

Stunning scenery

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tallis was superb and a great asset to the tour

WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF BOTSWANA

An excellent trip. I have done safaris in South Africa, Namibia and the classic Kenya Mara trip, but I have never seen so much wildlife. Elephant, Lion, Leopard (first time ever) and all the usual beasts of the plains. One day we had just set up camp and someone called "elephant coming". I looked to see it less than 20m away looking straight at me. Luckily there was a vehicle between him and me. That is how wild the camping is, especially in Moremi and Savouti.I am incredibly unfit, yet I enjoyed the walks in the Delta and managed to stay comfortable whilst camping, something I haven’t done in 30 years.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a pride of nine lionesses stalk a group of zebra. They failed to catch one but seeing the skill and organisation was impressive.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sam and his team were brilliant. They gave lots of very relevent advice that always worked out, they were very knowledgable and could drive along the roughest of roads and still spot the smallest animals before anyone else. The food they cooked was better than anything most people could cook on a campfire. Proper food like stews, caseroles but also fish & chips or steak. All three were hard working, very friendly and very helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do:the Okavango Delta flight. Great value for money compared to the  helicopter flight in Vic Falls the dinner cruise at Vic Falls. They'll run it even if only 2 people are on boar. Good food, unlimited drink and seeing hippos and crocs as they settle in for the night. If you do the helicopter flight over the falls, take the short Flight of Angels. The longer flight is not worth the extra $125. The DVD is a waste of money.Don'tHave an afternoon sleep, no matter how hot it gets. You won't sleep that night. Read a book and keep hydrated. take too many gadgets that need recharging. There will only be one facility to recharge and that is in the vehicle and can only be used one item at a time. Invest in extra batteries and charge them before you go. Worry about being taken to local "craft shops" or workshops were you could be pressured into buying local souvenirs. One group member actually had to ask to be pointed towards a souvenir shop.

DUBROVNIK & THE DALMATIAN COAST

Our first Exodus experience exceeded expectations and provided a superb introduction to Croatia and the cities, countryside and culture of the Dalmatian Coast. An ideal mixture of city tours, countryside walks, free time and jolly evening meals with the "team".

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to pick just one, but first entering Dubrovnik in the evening, with the walls floodlit and alpine swifts screaming overhead takes some beating.  Trogir, Diocletian's Palace at Split, Korcula Island (Agroturismo Grubinjac evening meal not to be missed!), Ston, and everything about Dubrovnik will linger long in the memory.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marija was extremely knowledgeable about the area (she lives in Split) and about Croatian culture and history in general. She inspired confidence from first meeting at the airport and kept everyone informed and supported individuals as and when required. Her varied choice of restaurants provided the venue for an entertaining group meal every evening if desired. She ensured that the group gelled from the first evening at the Tragos Hotel in Trogir Old Town.  The city guides she fixed up for Split and Dubrovnik were excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you stay at the Hotel Liburna in Korcula, try to get a sea-view room from an upper floor; these were (reputedly) very nice.  Our ground floor room facing in the opposite direction, looked out on an overgrown grass bank and the bathroom was smelly, with original communist era fittings and plumbing.  The room itself was fine and the Hotel interesting in style and ideally located. Walking shoes/boots advisable for Korcula walk on loose stones for much of the way.

SIERRA DE AITANA TREK

This was a fantastic pre winter trip, close to home. The region is spectacular, walking is challenging, food was amazing and the group were great company. It exceeded all of my expectations.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summits of each mountain climbThe sunset on the final day of walkingJose's passion for the region and his committment to the local communityEnjoying the generous supply of Spanish wineThe hospitality we received at both sets of accommodationThe tranquility - on most days we hardly saw any other walkers

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose was incredible. He has a great sense of humor, is extremely knowledgeable, and a tremendous patriot for this region of Spain. His community minded attitude, and respect for the environment, was inspirational. You couldn't ask for a better host and guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The weather at this time of year was really warm on most of the days. Plenty of sunscreen and water required
