TREASURES OF SICILY

A good introduction to a fascinating Island.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the cathedral at Monreale.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Salvos is a lovely man. A font of knowledge on volcanology, flora and foods on Sicily. If he could not immediately answer a question he was able to research and let us know later. He took us to markets, deli's and restaurants where we could enjoy a variety of Sicilian foods and wines.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was pleased that I took walking boots for Etna and the Zingaro reserve for although the climbs are easy the terrain is hard on the foot and thinner soles would be very uncomfortable. This trip visits well appointed hotels so a hairdryer is not necessary but you could make room in your case for some prettier clothes for the evenings.

DUBROVNIK & THE DALMATIAN COAST

Everything we expected and more. The Dalmatian Coast really is beautiful and this is a great introduction to the coast, country and towns.

Most Inspirational Moment

Loved walking the walls of Dubrovnik. Great views and lots of history, ancient and modern.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Always bursting with enthusiasm, Kristo was a friendly and knowledgeable leader. Made sure all the arrangements went super smoothly. Found us some really good places to eat too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you like an early morning cuppa take a travel kettle - none of our rooms had tea or coffee making facilities.

SOUTH AFRICAN WALKING SAFARI

A great holiday with a mixture of walking and wildlife. After a couple of very, very, wet days the sun came out, the walking became enjoyable. We had a pretty mixed group and just about everybody enjoyed the experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Stalking cheetah on foot in Kruger.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Admire and Rob were very good indeed, as was Tsepo, the driver. The earier unusually heavy rains forced changes of both routes and accomodation, but they handled it very professionally. Admire led most of the hikes and both his and Rob's local knowledge was pretty good. Oh, and they could cook pretty well, no complaints on that score.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go in the South African summer, take really good waterproofs - and make sure you have a waterproof cover for your rucksack (bitter personal experience). Some of the transfers are long, so cultivate an interest in birds - plenty of spotting opportunities when on the road. Take a Kindle or similar too.

WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

4 days of moderate walking in beautiful countryside with stunning views of the Amalfi coast. The trip in May allows you to walk in perfect walking conditions with the added bonus of being able to see wildflowers in their natural habitat. The Hotel due Torri, a family run hotel, has friendly staff that make your stay memorable.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, the boat ride on the final day after the Walk of the Gods was the most inspirational momemnt when I could see in a panoramic view all the places I had walked in the past week.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was absolutely superb. She made everyone feel included, whatever their fitness level was. She had excellent local knowledge, spoke fluent Italian and held the group together. She even made the bus driver sing!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring walking sticks and expect to have a lovely holiday.

DARJEELING, SIKKIM & THE SINGALILA RIDGE

one of the best treks for variety and views of the himalayan range – a great intoduction for another higher altitude trek, for fitness and acclimitisation – more than a walk in the Cotswalds as advertised – and Dilip was a superb guide – could not do better

Most Inspirational Moment

views into Nepal India and Sikkim and of course the view of the himalayas from Everest to Kuchenjunga

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dilip was exceptional in every way - helpful, caring, informative,  good sense of humour, reliable and a really decent human being. He had good relationships with his staff, who were all happy, and clients.

Advice for Potential Travellers

do it - its short and join it with another trek latergood combination with trek and cultural tour

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

A great climb out to Mt Toubkal, and with a really good group of people as well.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think the most inspirational moment was getting to the top of Toubkal, which was definately hard work and quite a struggle.  To do that after nearly four days of hard walking was certainly rewarding.  I just about amanged to hold back the tears a few times when the emotions overwhelmed me - although perhaps it was just the altitude sickness!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan was a really good leader.  He was extremely welcoming and clearly wanted us all to enjoy our week in Morocco.  He even invited the group to his house for tea and some snacks towards the end of the week. On the walking aspect he kept a very good pace which wasn't too fast, but certainly pushed me hard.  He was perhaps a bit hands off to the extent that he expected you to sort yourself out most of the time and take resposibility which I think is exactly right.  He is a mountain leader after all not a nanny.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for cold night especially in April/May time.  Remember to bring plenty of strong suncream.  The toilet facilities on teh nights when you are camping are very basic and consist of a small tent over a hole in the ground - so bring wet wipes and toilet roll.  Make use of the nearby refuges when at the high base camp.  You don't have to be super fit to do this one, but it is several days of long hard walking so you should have a decent level of experience on mountains.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

This trip was everything that I expected and more. The ascent was inspiring alone but I hadn’t anticipated such an intimate glimpse of the Berber people and their villages too. My guide was A1 and the food was fantastic. A great adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

Without a doubt my most inspirational moment would have to have been the ascent of Mt Toubkal itself. The sense of achievement and the views were both incredible. However, the trek 'upwards' through the Berber villages would have to come a close second. Culturally the trip was quite mind blowing!

Thoughts on Group Leader

I was travelling alone so was instantly comforted by the organisation, communication and skill of our guide. He was a Berber and had been guiding trips to the summit of Mt Toubkal and the surrounding areas for over 20 years so had a wealth of knowledge to offer. He took stock of all of our varying abilities and waited, listened and understood, which is really important I think. He was a really decent guy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice for this trip would be to not underestimate the effects of Altitude Sickness. Thankfully I wasn't effected by this but some others in my group experienced some symptoms. Also, plan for the extremes of temperature as it can be very hot during the day but freezing during the night. So on both counts, be prepared!

CYCLING CUBA

Brilliant holiday… I wish it had gone on twice as long!

Most Inspirational Moment

cycling over crabs.... swimming in the waterfall at Trinidad... cycling through the mountain villages smelling of woodsmoke...drinking mohitos with about three shots of rum in there just because they don't use measures in cuba. ..  ...and Havana .. an inspiration all on its own.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was great :)  He had a fantastic sense of humour, he was great company; kind, likeable and funny and looked after us all really well - pretty much all the time. Don't know how he did it to be honest. ..

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't forget to bring a padded gel seat. You need all the help you can get!  and wear alot of sunscreen.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

I enjoyed the challenge, the food, the fresh air. The group was smallish and so the guide had time for everyone. Encouragement and support really made this holiday, as did the ice cream!

Most Inspirational Moment

Being at the top of Tuscany with good weather and a 360 degree view. Being above the tree line. Walking through snow in May. Realising that the ledge paths are as wide as a pavement, thanks to Sarah.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sarah supported each of us, she was quickly aware of what we could do, even when I didn't think it was possible - those ledges again!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you remember your waterproofs, just in case, don't bother with walking sandals in May.

WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

What a lovely week I had walking with three girl friends whom I met for lunch in January in a little tea shop near where we live. On mentioning I was going to walk the Amalfi coast they had all signed up and paid deposits with in 5 days. They too had such a good week that on our return home the question was, where are we going next time? we had good food, good company and the week was well organised. I can highly recommend this adventure to anyone.

Most Inspirational Moment

the views across the med sea and landscape will stay in my head for a long time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was just fantastic. could not fault her.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do go and walk the Amalfi coast. so much history there too.
