CYCLING VIETNAM

A tough experience but thoroughly rewarding when you completed your day of cycling.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling downhill through Bidoup Nui National Park, 30kms of winding roads in the glorious sunshine and wind against you, the view was amazing.Riding through the villages and children coming out and high-fiving youSeeing the amazing gravestones in one of the villages, known as Ghost CityWatching how happy and content the Vietnamese people are even with the simplest things in life, teaches us westerners some things as we have so much and are still never happy!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tom was brilliant!  He couldnt help people enough and had so much knowledge. His quote summarised the trip - 'Everyday is another best day'

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you practice riding even if you are reasonably fit.  I thought I was quite fit as I play netball and do bootcamps and am quite active but nothing prepared me for those long days on the bike and especially the hills!  Make sure you take lots of padding for your backside!

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: KVITAVATN

A brilliant week, exceptional leaders, fabulous tuition and an all round great place to be.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sunshine and diamond dust air with mountains as far as the eye can see - magical

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ilse & Mary are inspirational, know how to get the best out of people whilst having a laugh.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

An absolutely brilliant experience, exceptionally hard last couple of days and definately not for the faint hearted.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the high point at Uhuru Peak was probably the most satisfying as opposed to inspirational moment.  There were many inspirational moments ranging from meeting and walking with the other members of the group[ and likewise meeting and walking with the excellent guides.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader 'Florence' was of the highest standard and although just my second trip with Exodus I have to say it is what I have come to expect.  Florence and his assistants were exceptional throughout the trip providing encouragement and support to everyone, this leads to an increase in confidence knowing you are in safe hands and help is at hand should it be required

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for it if you feel you can but build up your fitness level to a degree higher than you think you might need, this is not a walk in the park.

CYCLE NICARAGUA, COSTA RICA & PANAMA

very professional and a great experienceKevin Hill  is a wonderful operater, and his team are really slick and love what they do.group travel just dosnt get any better than this trip

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting my butt kicked by guys 20 years older than me. Made me want to try harder

Thoughts on Group Leader

I think Kevin Hill and his team are just wonderful. Kevin really is the best I have come across in years it just dosnt get any better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just get out there and into this trip it really is a great experience

ATLAS PANORAMA

This is a perfect 1 week package for someone who wants a break from their routine, to see some incredible landscapes, feeling small against nature and to see the sun!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Being in a completely different context with the sun on my face - in great company. Wandering back to our Gite with a break-off group, stopping to take in the scenery and bathing our feet in the river.

Thoughts on Group Leader

A true professional - good knowledge, kind, experienced.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely take 2 loo rolls - just in case! And if you feel the cold like me - take long johns and a long goose down jacket for the gite.

UNDISCOVERED ATLAS

This was a challenging walk in the most extraordinary terrain.  It was beautiful in the extreme, made even more beautiful by the emptiness and tranquillity of the surroundings.  No tourists other than ourselves, and uplifting contact with the friendly and hospitable locals when we met them.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably the stunning night sky shimmering with a myriad of lights, completely unavailable to us in this form in England.  The trip was worth it for this alone.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was a first class leader.  A young local man, clearly highly focussed on his job as our leader, but yet full of humour, knowledge, and humanity to us as demanding, stumbling, inept tourists - well some of us anyway.  He was instrumental in making our experience as exceptionally good as it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Reasonable fitness, good walking boots, and walking poles all help in making the trip more enjoyable.  It can also get cold at night so a good sleeping bag is a must.

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

Great week that allowed the group to be as active as they wished. Amazing food and lovely, warm accommodation.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many although the memory of trekking through the forest at night to make and throw a snowball of " wishes" into the rapids will stay with me for some time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marti was great - passionate about the Park and ensuring that everyone enjoyed themselves in a non competitive environment.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Took me a full week to recover in return to the UK!!! I was shattered but it is really up to you how much activity you do on free days and afternoons. Extra activities are a tad expensive so be prepared.

CLASSIC VIETNAM & ANGKOR

This was an excellent trip made even better by a particularly congenial group of fellow travellers.  Our guide in Vietnam, Nam, was truly Mr Fix-it, even lending me his watch for the duration of the trip when mine was out of battery.  Vietnam was a fascinating country and the trip should really be sub-titled ‘A Gastronomic Tour’.  The food was great throughout

Most Inspirational Moment

My most enjoyable day was our first full day in Hoi An when we went on a bike ride round the surrounding countryside, seeing the local herb farms and even taking in a local festival of thanksgiving for the rice harvest.  That evening we had a delicious dinner with a local family. In the afternoon I also collected a dress I'd ordered - made in just 24 hours.

Thoughts on Group Leader

As I said above, he was very good.

Advice for Potential Travellers

In your Trip Notes you said that Malaria prophylaxis was essential but my surgery did not agree and I did not take anything.  The airport at Siem Riep was very well organised for producing visas on entry and it only cost $20 - cheaper than getting in advance in England.

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

We chose this holiday as it gave us the chance to try out lots of new activities so even if we didn’t see the Aurora Borealis, we’d have a great time. We had high expectations of this holiday – and it exceeded them all!

Most Inspirational Moment

Hearing the cry 'Northern Lights! Northern Lights!' at about 1230 a.m., scrambling into our clothes to run down to the lake and watching the Aurora was fantastic. The brilliant blue sky against the almost lunar landscape of the Riisintunturi National Park on our dog-sledding trip. Cross-country skiing through the woodsThe Little Bear trail - a great morning of walking with some of the other members of the group: beautiful scenery, lovely companyThe guided trek to Castle Rock - the guide's knowledge really added to our enjoyment

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teddy/Bjorn was brilliant: good fun, knowledgeable, great teaching manner. All the staff should be commended for their work - always smiling, ever helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You really don't need to take very much luggage at all - we used our own thermals, socks and hats but everything else we used belonged to Basecamp. Do take a belt. If you want to take photos of the Northern Lights, you'll need a camera that you can set to an exposure of 30 seconds to a minute.

CUBAN HIGHLIGHTS RIDE

An excellent trip which exceeded our expectations. We had a great time in a country in which we always felt very safe. Cuba is wonderful, such a fascinating country, well worth visiting before Western influences and an increase in tourism change it irrevocably.  As others have commented, you cycle with some really nice people on these trips.

Most Inspirational Moment

The caves in Guajimico, the music in Trinidad and Havana, the constant backdrop of the Escambray mountains, the iridescent turquoise waters of the Caribbean or the sunset in Hanabanilla, but there wasn’t just one inspirational moment, there were lots of them throughout the trip. For us the best day’s cycling was the optional ride in the Valle de los Ingenios, the best place visited was Trinidad and the loveliest location for a hotel was Guajimico on the south coast or Hanabanilla beside a lake in the Escambray hills. If you have extra time in Havana, it is a truly inspirational city.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very good – professional, patient and well organised and offered us some very interesting insights into Cuban life.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would support much of the advice given by other contributors to these reviews. 1. Take plenty of sunscreen, insect repellent and toiletries, toilet rolls and plenty of cash (ATMs are few and far between). Also take a padded seat cover to put over your seat and padded shorts. We would also strongly recommend that you take immodium with you. 2. If you enjoy snorkelling, take a snorkel – a number of people in our group regretted not having one when we stopped at a couple of excellent spots for snorkelling. 3. In Guajimico we were offered a trek in the afternoon of our arrival.  It is excellent, not a ‘trek’ but a leisurely one and a half hours stroll through the woods along the coast, a swimming opportunity in an idyllic little cove and a visit to some caves where we saw some bats. 4. In Trinidad there is a rest day which gives you the opportunity to have a rest, go on a catamaran trip or cycling in the Valle de los Ingenios. Most went on the catamaran trip (the usual boat trip with bar facilities, lunch and some free time on a beach) but my wife and I cycled in the Valle de los Ingenios  – for us it was the best day’s cycling as the valley with the Manaca Iznaga tower is a Unesco World Heritage site and the views were wonderful. 5. At the Havana hotel, the Occidental Miramar, we would recommend the à la carte restaurant El Patio – it was our best meal in Cuba, a little more expensive than other meals but still under 50$ for two. 6. The group tour of Havana at the end of the trip is too short for such a fascinating city.  My wife and I booked a two weeks holiday in Cuba – 3 nights in a hotel in old Havana, the 8 nights cycling holiday and 4 nights in an all inclusive hotel beach hotel in Varadero – and would thoroughly recommend it.
