MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

This was my first trip with Exodus and i have been completely converted ! From our initial enquiry the service we have received has been exemplary and everything was taken care of which we would have not been able to organise in the timeframe  as solo travellers.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip was a real cultural feast it is not possible to pick just one moment but we really enjoyed our timebrowsing in the souk and the trekking in the Atlas

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lassan our group leader was superb he always went the extra mile and was great company as wellas a superb guide. His knowledge of Morroccan history and politics was very informative as washis knowledge of the Flora and Fauna of the region which added to our experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This particular trip does call for a good level of stamina and fitness but is well worth the physical demands.

Suggestions

I would go again tomorrow ! A great country with very friendly people .

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

I had a great time: the landscape, the other people on the trek, the guide and muleteers, the physical effort, the sun, the wind. It was just as challenging as I wanted it, and as the colours are quite different from what you get in the European mounatins, definitely worth the trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

It-s hard to say, but I will go for the moment just before the peak of Toubkal when finally we could see over all the other mountains, that view was inspiring after the efforts to get up there, and the early start :)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide (Lahcen and Hassan) was great, excellent at pacing and had a good feeling of how fresh people were. Plus a lovely chap, funny and very knowlegeable!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Not much, I recommend the trek, also good in terms of value for money I think. If you want a week off from work, take this one. The business of Marrakech and the peacefulness of the moauntains are great!

Suggestions

Maybe one thing to add is that you should take some cereal bars or similar as sometimes it takes time to get food in the evening. I prefer to eat a bit when trekking, and even though we got offered nuts, spicy and sweet, that was only at the rest points.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

Good standards of guides, equipment and food. Well organised and reliable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Having the chance to climb two over 4km high mountains

Thoughts on Group Leader

Brilliant

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get on the trip and enjoy yourself

What a week!

This is a great trip where 8 days felt easily like two weeks, giving you total immersion in another way of life, forgetting all about whatever you’ve left behind to get there.  There’s a bit of everything – plenty of fresh air and hot sun (plus a bit of snow if you’re lucky); freshly squeezed orange on the trail and mint tea at every turn; the camaraderie of campsites and the celebration of reaching the summit; followed by the sheer craziness of Marrakech.

Most Inspirational Moment

The summit of Toubkal definitely gives you a top of the world feeling (we were very lucky and had about an hour and a half there).  Once up there it's worth making some time for yourself to pause for a while, after all the excitement of the photo-taking and whiskey-sipping (see below), and just sitting quietly and taking it all in, watching the birds drifting around and feeling the majesty of the mountains. I was inspired by the hard work and dedication I saw around me from the people who made sure we had a great time.  Especially our chef (Lassan) who was always joking around and still managed to make us some fab food, popping his head in the tent for a quick "bon appetit" at every meal.  Just the sight of him had us all grinning and wondering what was going to happen next!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both guides Mohammed and Yehye looked after us very well throughout the trip, really bringing Morocco to life wih their stories and personal insights into Moroccan traditions (especially at the hammam in Aroumd - thanks Mohammed!).  I had some very honest and fascinating chats with both of them about the political and social realities of their country.  They were patient, kind and genuinely interested in everyone in the group, and keen for us to have the best time. They were also very generous with their nuts!! (and dates and figs - easily beating our Tracker and Go bars for some quality en route snacking)

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a hip flask for a welcome celebration at the summit (it's a "dry" week!).Take a camelback or similar for at least 2 litres - if you have to keep stopping to open water bottles you might not drink enough of the stuff.  You can buy bottled water everywhere so don't worry about taking purification tablets.  I also took another bottle so I could have 3 litres every day.You don't need a mattress for camping - these were provided and very comfy (a bit like those foam covered sun lounger ones).  Just bring your sleeping bag.   Remember a head torch for those late night comfort breaks.Walking poles are helpful on the descent but not essential if you've got strong knees.  I was fine with one.Stay an extra night in Marrakech at the end - it's all a bit of a culture shock when you get back there from the mountains but after a day you are ready to enjoy it!

Suggestions

I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of this holiday: the many altitude-induced giggles with co-trekkers - especially my new friend and tent buddy; the beautiful scenery, with goats and mules trudging; not forgetting the unique experience that is Marrakech on a weekend in 44 degrees (!). JUST BOOK IT!

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

A very enjoyable trip. Members of the group got on well together, which helped the trip go well.

Most Inspirational Moment

For a first timer like me, summitting Toubkal was just awesome. The hard graft in ice and snow to the top was worth every grunt and breath.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Mohamad was excellant. Lots of local knowlege of geography (naturally) with local customs, social life and economy. Helped us appreciate where we were more.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes! read and understand the course notes. some menbers of our group didn`t and were a little caught out.

Suggestions

We were advised to take crampons and ice axe as the weather had not cleared, and all group members did this. The group was of mixed ability and experience, and some raced on and others found it difficult and lagged behind. There were only two guides for 16 members who did a great job, but were very stretched to look after all of us. On a good note we all got up to the summit, and down again safe and sound.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

Loved the Atlas mountains, especially the Mt Ouanalrim trek. Guide was fantastic, maintained a steady pace and was very knowledgeable. Not as challenging as i was expecting. Am now addicted to Moroccan mint tea!

Most Inspirational Moment

The Mt Ounankrim climb was much more interesting than Toubkal, the views from the summit were amazing and there was no one else there to share them with.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mohammed was a great guide. We were amazed that he was able to be so energetic whilst fasting for Ramadan.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Watch out in Marrakech, we were short changed by a market trader but were distracted by someone else so by the time we noticed it was too late to complain.

Suggestions

Definitely worth a visit.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

Fantastic. The whole trip was perfectly organised. From being met at the airport to our bags always being at the relivant stop on time etc.Our guide was great. Very friendly and certanly knew his stuff! The trip wasnt quite as demanding as I was expecting. But that is by no means Exodus’ fault. I would without question recommend Exodus to friends and family, Im planning on using them again this year.

Most Inspirational Moment

Using our crampons and ice axes for the final ascent.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great. Friendly and knowledgable.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

Mohammed was an excellent guide..

Advice for Potential Travellers

Last day is pretty openended so book a walking trip of the city

Suggestions

Two days in the ciy is enough, people are great but be careful of the snake charmers..if they get your camera it'll cost you to get it back..

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

What a beautiful place the Atlas Mountains are. I kept thinking how lucky I was not to be at my desk at work and enjoyed every footstep on the dusty trails and every breath of mountain air.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walks took us up and over a high pass before descending into the valley of Aroumd.  It was a long days walk, but so beautiful along the way and we stopped at various points to gather our breath, cool down in the shade, acclimatise, chat to the group and take in the views. After a comfortable night in the Gite (for the girls at least) there followed another long walk the next day which took us up through the valley pass to the Neltner Refuge (Toubkal basecamp).  But when I got too tired there was a backup ... the mule !  What a way to travel.  I think I'll be trading in my car very very shortly. There were stops for drinks and snacks along the way, so again, a very manageable day.  However, all those little luxuries disappeared for the summit day, but the hard uphill battle was soon forgotten when we reached the top and looked out at the mountains spread out beyond. Stunning.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader (Rachid) was very kind and friendly. Our bags were always there before us, our rooms ready, and Rachid spent time explaining the culture and sights as we travelled along. However, the pace was a bit too fast for me (I am notoriously slow - and this group were also extremely fast) so I quickly lagged behind.  This didn't bother me in the slightest though - apart from on the day after the ascent when I would have liked to have done another walk, but didn't think I could keep up with the pace set, so I didn't go (went litter picking around the Refuge instead in an eco warrior kind of way!).  The assistant guide (Hammid) was always at the rear of the group, so I was always in safe hands. Plus he had the "emergency" mule, so was quite a popular fellow. Rachid also stopped frequently enough so that I (and other laggers) could catch up, and that was fine.  Rachid and Hammid worked hard the whole week to make sure the trip ran smoothly and that we had good lunches and dinners.  No mean feat for a large group.  Legends both.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A couple of bits of advice - (1) take a thin sheet / sarong as this is useful for the more basic accommodation units (like the Refuge) to separate you from the rather over-used mattresses and concrete pillows ! (2) unless you are the dominant snorer, ear plugs are quite useful..., but be prepared for a broken nights sleep at the Refuge anyway as the dorms are quite big and altitude has a funny effect on some people. (3) take some coloured pencils, crayons and small notebooks - the kids in the villages go mad for these and you will probably be cleaned out in a matter of minutes (I was). I really enjoyed the food that was prepared by our cook, but some of the others in the group didn't enjoy so much vegetarian food or the sweet / spiced (cinnamon) flavours.  However, it's fresh fare and someone else cooks and does the washing up - how can anyone complain about that...!

Suggestions

I loved this trip and would like to go back and amble through the mountains at a more leisurely pace (with maybe a couple of mules just in case I got tired...!). Conversations with the locals took a long time, and sometimes I had to rush off to catch up with the group. But I guess that's the clash of cultures ...!

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

A great trip which is challenging but not technical with the reward of standing on the highest peak in the Atlas mountains.   The trip is in  my opinion very good value for money.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of mount Toubkal this was the reason for going. Knowing that at that time I was the highest person (well along with the rest of my group) in North Africa.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rashid was very good , knowledgeable and always had a smile on his face. On  the first day the pace he set appeared brisk taking into acount the temperature and that he had not had time to gauge the capabilities of the group. He always however had a colleague bringing up the rear. Thereafter, particularly on summit day the speed was more sedate.Went out of his way to arrange mule rides for some of the group on the final days descent to Imlil

Advice for Potential Travellers

First  if travelling by own steam, when arriving at Marrakech airport make sure you ask what the airport fare to the Hotel is before agreeing taxi ride. The trip notes give you an idea what to pay. taxi drivers will try to take advantage. We travelled in  September and it is hot  when the sun rises above the mountains, particularly at the lower altitude and as there is little shade.  Make sure you have plenty of water . Be careful what you eat the day before you start on  the walk having a dodgy stomach can seriously ruin  your trip. The refuge (base camp)  is fairly basic we had a room for 16 hence it may be difficult to sleep  also you are up early on  the two summit days . The climb up to Toubkal is not technically difficult although the path is rough and dusty and a times is fairly steep.  My opinion is that the descent is trickier as there are points which can be slippy so walking poles may assist.Food on  the trip is generally good a lot of cooked vegatables. If you like alcohol be warned the Hotel in  Marrakech may be one of the few places you can order it.Try the Italian Ice cream restaraunt  about fifteen minutes from the hotel on the way to the Souks (which  will take around 45 minutes to walk).

Suggestions

if you are an experienced hill walker in The Lake District or Scotland this trip will not present too may problems. Your fellow group members and expedition leader will no dobt drive you on and if you do get tired you can always ride on a donkey !.Go for it.
