A WEEK IN JORDAN

Jordan is a country with a big history and this is a short trip. The itinerary is therefore ‘well packed’. To get the best from the holiday you should expect to use the time to learn as much about this history as possible. Shopping etc will probably have to done before of after the official trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The simple act of giving an orange to one of the young children running a 'nick knack' stall close to the monastery in Petra. This gave me a small appreciation of the warm hearted nature of the Jordanian people and really made want to return and explore the country in a more leisurely manner.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danny must rank as one of the best guides I have come across. He was amazingly knowledgeable about his country and was clearly passionate about sharing this knowledge. He was very proud of his country and showed this with enthusiasm. He could not have done more for the group and was always available to help (sorry about phoning with our Amman taxi problems when you should have been resting ready for your next tour!). The time he spent with the group to ensure we had as trouble free time as possible seemed to go above and beyond what I would expect to be reasonable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This can be quite an intense week. To get the best from Petra especially expect a strenuous couple of days with a very good level of physical fitness to fully explore the site. Don't expect much free time to do your own thing but do expect to see and do a lot in a short space of time.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

This is a fantastic trip full of history and culture. Jordan is a wonderful place to visit, the people are very friendly and you feel very safe and well looked after. If you would like to visit the middle east this is the trip for you.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many wonderfull highlights to this trip it is hard to decide. Petra is amazing and takes your breath away when you see the Treasury for the first time after walking through the Siq as was the long walk up the steps to see the Monastary and the high place of sacrifice. You definitely need the 2 days there to take it all in. The Wadi Rum is perhaps my favourite place of the trip, its so peaceful there and you feel truly inspired by the stillness of the desert. Our bedhouin hosts provided a delicious meal and made us feel very welcome in their camp. sleeping under the stars just finished the experience off perfectly. The camel ride in the morning was the perfect way to end our time there, a real 'Lawrence of Arabia' experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danny our guide was fantastic. His knowledge of all the places we visited was amazing and he brought the history of each place to life. He was very passionate about his country and wanted us to experience the best that Jordan had to offer us. We were a large group so we all had differerent demands but he was always willing to accommodate everyones needs.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is an action packed trip with not much time in some of the places have any 'free' time to look around or shop which may be frustrating for some. You get a free afternoon on the second day in Petra and there are plenty of souvenir stalls to brouse round and grab a bargain. The jewellery is particularly good quality here and the bedhouin traders always happy to barter.  There's a lot of history to take in in each place so it does help to have one of the guide books like 'The Lonely Planet' to refer to. Take a sleeping bag and plenty of layers for the night in Wadi Rum, it does get very cold at night.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

This is a fast-paced trip packed with activity; very much designed for anyone fascinated with the ancient history of the middle east. I loved Petra and Wadi Rum and thankfully we had enough time to really explore those places and the sunny weather to go with the visits … however, other aspects of the week were not so good…

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra has to be the highlight of this trip - it didn't disappoint.  The sheer scale of the ancient city was mind-blowing.  I loved exploring the heights above the heart of Petra and would particularly recommend the exhausting walk up to the Monastery and also the place of High Sacrifice.  Spooky!Wadi Rum was also a brilliant experience - we had an evening meal cooked in a desert oven.  So tasty! My third highlight was Jerash - a vast Roman city, situated to the north of Amman. I just wish this visit had been included at the end of the trip and not on day 1 when we were all exhausted from our 3am arrival the night before!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader, Dan, was extremely knowledgeable about Middle Eastern ancient history and was keen to share this with us.  However, sometimes his zest for his subject - and his desire to keep to the planned itinerary - created an inflexibility as regards tuning in to the needs and wants of the group.  A number of the female members of the group would have liked more opportunities for good quality shopping ... for example, we were rushed through the row of shops and stalls lining the main street in Madeba in order to reach the Church containing Mosaics ... Dan also tended to mumble, so stand near to him if you want to hear what he has to say! Our group numbered 22 so, frequently, hearing his discourse clearly was a real challenge!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take lots of immodium - about a third of our group got D and V!November is a great month to go on this trip if you are lucky with the weather...  the previous week the group had rain and cloud all week but we had sun! So take layers of clothing because even if it's hot in the day it's usually cold at night, particularly in Amman in the north. And take a rain proof jacket.Petra really is the high-light and you have two good days to explore.  If you want help to get around horses and donkeys and camels are available but can be high-spirited if egged on by their youthful owners! My sense is that on foot is best ... so take solid walking shoes for tramping over thos dusty and loose boulders and slippery steps.

An excellent trip, highly recommended. Very varied, many things to do & see.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra as Wadi Rum were beautiful, very special places as the weather was good the experience was very inspirational. The second day walk that we did with the local bedouin lady "Henna" was fantastic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danni has a wonderful easy  mannerisum,  and a gently spoken  informative way of putting across his considerable knowledge of the  history of his country  which he was clearly passionate about. He also was Considerate, And looked after us very well. Very responsible 5*****

Advice for Potential Travellers

Jordan was a bit more expensive than I would expected, so I would recommend taking a bit extra for drinks, especially alcoholic drinks.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A great experience for our first ‘group’ tour in over 30 years of travel. It was great just being able to turn up and enjoy. Thank you Exodus!

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra was the stand out - one of the best sights we have visited anywhere. We chose this tour because it gave us 2 full days there and we were not disappointed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danny was great - struck a good balance between keeping us on track and giving us space.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you do the hike up to the Treasury viewpoint - a must.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A very varied trip, history, a bit of walking, culture, desert, snorkelling, pilgrimage, plenty of sun. Jordan has it all…

Most Inspirational Moment

Lots of inspirational moments, but the walk through the canyon (Siq) and seeing the Treasury at Petra gradually coming into sight has to be the moment, especially with the full mid-morning sun making it rosy. It is better than can be imagined.Caking ourselves in mud from the Dead Sea and floating in it was amazing--your skin feels 20 years younger.Seeing the majesty of the desert at sunset and sleeping in a camp bathed in moonlight, then starlight, watching the shooting stars and gradually the sunrise.Snorkelling in the Red Sea and seeing the beautiful coral reefs, floating amongst shoals of colourful fishVisiting biblical sites, and seeing the promised land as Moses did!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very personable, full of historical knowledge and worked very hard to please a large (20 people) group. Age range in our group was mid-twenties to mid seventies, so everyone needed something different and Danny coped extremely well. Jordan is a Muslim country and alcohol availability is sparse, but he made an effort to get us to available off-license as appropriate and recommended restaurants where wine was available. Did a lot of phoning around to make arrangements for individuals. Great guy!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare to be amazed at what Jordan has to offer. It has a wealth of history as well as beautiful landscapes and really friendly people. With only a 2hr time difference, a wonderful week in a very different environment without coping with jet lag on return is a definite bonus. It is worth doing some reading on some of the historical stuff before you go. Also there is the opportunity to snorkel or dive one day, to ride a camel in the desert, to experience the spa effects of the Dead Sea and come back laden with Dead Sea products.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

With the current political situation, there was a degree of concern about being in such a volatile area of the world. but we need not have worried, Jordan is such a safe, relaxed and easy going country, and we were cared for so well by Danni, our guide.
This trip is highly recommended for anyone who wants to get to know a country well, and who doesn’t have much time. Full-on, but with Time to come up for air, I heartily recommend not just this trip, but Exodus as an organiser who really knows how to care for their customers.

Most Inspirational Moment

Having climbed to the high places above The Treasury in Petra, and to be quite alone in such stunning surroundings, having followed a suggestion from our brilliant guide , the desert calm and the amazing colours that ARE Petra take your breath away. Nobody should consider themselves a Middle East traveller until they have experienced this.

Thoughts on Group Leader

This is my fourth Exodus trip, and on every one we have enjoyed great guides. Danni was no exception. His knowledge of the trip, the places, the people and the history made each day 'come alive'. We left Jordan with a real appreciation for the country, it's people, and it's scenery - and Danni was largely responsible for this. On a trip like this, the guide can make or break things and he most certainly 'made it'. Score:- 9.99/10 (on principle I never give 10 so this is the best i could give!)

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a good camera for Petra - its the only way to relive the colours when back home. Take a waterproof camera for the Dead Sea and the Red Sea, and an insulated cover for a water bottle (Lowe Alpine do a great one) so that you have blissfully cold water when all around you are drinking tepid water.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A fascinating and varied week with a great blend of culture and delicious food.

Most Inspirational Moment

Looking up at the stars in Wadi Rum.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danny was a great leader.  Very proactive in terms of helping everyone on the tour, stepping in for example when I had received a terrible exchange rate at the airport!  Outstanding knowledge of Jordan and it's history and brilliant choice of restaurants.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was worried about 'covering up' and took long sleeved tops and trousers and long shorts.   In fact, short sleeved t shirts and shorts (though obviously not too short) are fine when going round placed like Petra where there are lots of other tourists.  I would recommend lots of changes of clothes, particularly tops, and Petra is very dusty and you get pretty dirty... I wish I'd taken more. You don't need to take a sleeping bag for Wadi Rum - they have lots.  Mine took up half my suit case and I didn't really need it. You might want to take a sleeping bag liner and maybe a pillow case cover. If your guide suggests the boat trip in Aqaba I would definitely recommend it.  It was fantastic - lovely boat, snorkling if you fancy it and a really nice crew.
