Return to The Baltics

Having been on previous “Baltics Winter Walking” (with Exodus), we wanted to return to experience the countryside and enjoy the walks in the National Parks in more conducive conditions and we were certainly not disappointed.
We again enjoyed the city visits, this time in the warm sunshine the bars/cafes spilling out on the buzzing sidewalks, but of course at each
city remembering the struggle and hardships they endured in previous decades.
The 2000 kms we travelled was full on but in a comfortable bus and with a careful and competent driver we made excellent progress on pot hole free highways. We stopped in towns, villages, walked through pine forests down to lake sides, traversed the Baltic Sea on ferries to picturesque islands each with their own character. Our ultimate ferry across to Helsinki was more like being on a cruise ship, an array of food outlets and a huge shopping mall.

Most Inspirational Moment

Not necessarily inspiring but certainly memorable: ….and not in any particular sequence. Visiting Ivan at his small vineyard, munching on his raspberries and enjoying his home made wines. Walking along the Curonian Spit til we ran out of land. The boat ride around Trakai Castle with our own “happy hour” on board. The girls braving the cold sea and swimming amongst the jellyfish. Cold War museum….this was somewhat rushed and felt more time needed to read all the chilling material. The lakeside walk in Helsinki past the little wooden lodges. Tallin Seaplane Harbour, worth a couple of hours of anyone’s time. Beer on the Russian Train. Helsinki Library…wow, that was something else ( must mention out excellent guide we had in Helsinki).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius……Open, honest, ready to answer all our questions, and great fun to be with. Kept us all amused with his jokes but still maintaining his professionalism as a first class leader, a credit to Exodus. Also…..an expert forager indentifying various edible berries and mushrooms. Of course, one thing we must thank him for is being our “Quality Control” food taster.

Advice for Potential Travellers

In previous reviews….good insect repellent, waterproof jacket and don’t take too many unnecessary clothes. On a few days we travelled, stopped for a beer or two, had dinner and then back to the hotel. Talking of hotels, generally good apart from The Panorama in Vilnius, a soviet looking bland block, very small dark rooms, chaotic breakfast area, an area where a bar used to be ( blamed COVID for that not reopening), but hey ho, a good location with some excellent bars nearby. ….a five star tour, great itinerary and good company. Hope any of you reading this decide to do it have just as good time as we had.

A fascinating week

This was an excellent tour, well paced with variety and surprises every day.

Most Inspirational Moment

Stalin Museum and Tbilisi

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, highly knowledge, insightful, clear and interesting commentary throughout. Most helpful and attentive to everyone in the group.

Igor

Guide Igor is exceptional in his roll and an asset to Exodus . His leadership and ability to stay calm in a crisis , shone when a fellow trekker fell and required assistance and evacuation.

Most Inspirational Moment

Beautiful scenery in a stunning location .

Costa Rica Coast to Coast Ride

This was a great opportunity to see Costa Rica on two wheels! Amazing scenery and beautiful wildlife!

Amazing Experiences

We had undertaken safaris before but had never seen elephants, hippos or zebras in the numbers that we came across on this trip. We were lucky enough to see the Big 5, but think our guides’ knowledge had a lot to do with that. We enjoyed game drives by vehicle and got wonderful views of wildlife on Chobe/Zambeizi river trips. The 2 night full-service camping in the Okavango Delta was a once in a lifetime experience. The trip overall was very well organised and varied and far exceeded expectations, our group of 10 having gelled extremely well. So pleased we did this trip as we now have so many amazing photos and memories to treasure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The joy of singing and dancing round a campfire with ‘polers’ who had looked after in the Okavango Delta. There were emotional farewells when we had to leave.

Thoughts on Group Leader

‘Trymore’ by name and ‘try more’ by nature, our Group Leader was outstanding in the way he led the group and ensured everything ran smoothly. He was ably assisted by Adonis, who was also expert on the rough roads, which lead to us all having a very safe and carefree holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We travelled in July and it was quite chilly on our first early morning game drive. You will be given blankets but I appreciated the warm jacket, woolly hat and lightweight scarf I took. If you have a sense of adventure I don’t think you’ll regret booking this trip.

Discover Sri Lanka

Just back from this trip, it was our first trip to Sri Lanka and our second trip with Exodus. It was a really great trip, really varied, we saw so much and yet the pace was just perfect. A beautiful country and very friendly and safe.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many highlights but seeing the elephants on safari and at the transit home will stay with me forever.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan was simply the best leader! He had fantastic knowledge, stories on the bus were so interesting, he had a great sense of humour and we loved spending time with him. Nothing was too much trouble, a genuinely lovely person. Roshan is a credit to Sri Lanka and to the Exodus company. Our driver Abey and driver assistant Samit, deserve a shout out too, always smiling!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes carefully and listen to your guide, Roshan gave us all the tips we needed. Visit Sri Lanka, you won't be disappointed!

Castles, Hadrian's Wall & the Lake District

The Hadrian’s wall trip was a perfect mix of hiking and touring the highlights of Northern England and the Lake District. Our guide Paul Cannon was very knowledgeable of the area being a native of the region. The places we stayed were inviting and comfortable.Overall the trip was all we expected and more.
Most Inspirational Moment

Hiking at Hadrian's wall and the castles we toured

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul was friendly and professional. He was very knowledgeable of the area and took safety precautions to assure our group was doing well

A wonderfully varied, fully immersive experience of Malaysia!

An incredible two weeks on Borneo and the Malaysian peninsula. The first part of the trip involves several days of wildlife cruises, whilst staying deep in the jungle, to search for orangutans, elephants, crocodiles and various exotic birds. We were fortunate enough to spot lots of interesting animals under the guidance of our fantastic leader, Jeffry. The second half of the trip involves visiting various towns and cities on the peninsula, including Malacca, famous for its street market, Kuala Lumpur, and Georgetown, a colonial town on Penang Island. There are plenty of opportunities for tours, sampling traditional food and shopping. Finally, the tour moves onto Langkawi for a relaxing end to the holiday. This serene island, featuring pristine beaches, wonderful restaurants and vibrant nightlife allowed my group plentiful free time to enjoy another part of the country before flying home. A wonderful holiday that encapsulated everything Malaysia has to offer.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing an orangutan and its baby in the wild!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Borneo itself was an extraordinary destination, it was Jeffry’s exceptional guidance and leadership that truly brought the trip to life. His deep expertise, passion for the region, and dedication to the group made him an invaluable part of the experience. Jeffry was not just a guide, but a true ambassador for Borneo, and his presence was a highlight that will be remembered long after the trip ended.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Despite the packed itinerary, there are several free afternoons and it's worth researching things you might want to do before you travel. Some activities such as the Petronas Towers need to be booked in advance due to limited availability.

Cycle the Baltics

Brilliant time with Cycle The Baltics. This was our first cycle adventure but now plan to do more. All three countries were beautiful with such interesting histories. Cycling each day was tough but manageable with plenty of enjoying breaks.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably spending time at the freedom museum in Riga. However trip had so many different highlights from eating fresh smoked fish, going to markets and swimming in lakes.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius was a fantastic leader, full of fun and keeping us all entertained. Andrius kept us busy day and night and added his own personal touch and freely shared his life experience of growing up in the Baltic’s. The best tour leader I have ever had.

Outstanding scenery

Incredible scenery throughout this walking holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The amazing rock formations whether they were seen from the valley floor, from the top of a cliff, the top of a castle or from a hot air balloon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledgeable and flexible. Clearly knew the area well and took note of weather and other tourists when choosing the order of our itinerary.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Water was no problem, there was a massive bottle on the minibus so we could refill our bottles at the start and half way through any hikes. Every meal we had bottled water for free. The terrain was exciting - often steep slopes where I was glad of sturdy walking boots and poles. Very few problem with insects late August. It was hot (mostly 27 - 33 degrees C) but not too humid. I recommend you take ear plugs, the dawn Muslim call to prayer is very loud at 5 am and we had a barking dog throughout most nights. The balloon ride cost is variable by day. For us it was 180 Euros instead of the expected 320E. You can pay in Turkish Lira. We took Turkish Lira with us and used that throughout the holiday. Many toilets charge 5 or 10 Turkish Lira so keep hold of your low notes. The Whirling Dervish optional event was very much a religious ceremony not entertainment - an interesting experience. One evening we ate outside and had to ask for blankets as we were too cold. Do take a jumper. The day before we arrived they had torrential rain - we were lucky and it only rained a bit in the evenings but it could have been a very different holiday late August - check you take rain gear with you.
