Cycle Trip - Prague to Budapest

A very good trip for our small group of 7. We averaged about 60km of cycling per day and that was ok, except when it got windy and we had a couple of wet days, which slowed progress. The group got on very well and we did experience different levels of cycling capability, so there was some waiting periods for some, but no-one worried about this.
Day planning was excellent with the guide co-ordinating things well.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling through the forests of Czech Republic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dana was excellent, communicated well, socialized well and is obviously very knowledgeable about this part of Europe; thanks Dana, come to NZ some time and see us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be cycling fit prior to commencing the trip and take clothing for all weathers.

Suggestions

Yes! This trip we found was very expensive for what we got (we have been on other trips in different parts of the world), not at all discounting Dana's efforts on our behalf. We think that the least Exodus could do would be to supply each cycling participant with a complimentary 'cycling t-shirt' as a reward for cycling with Exodus. This would be excellent marketing for Exodus and we think would encourage people to book again with Exodus in the future. We have received this gesture from other cycling groups. We note also that Exodus do have clothing available on their website but no discount for 'paying travellers'. Please consider this comment seriously and if you want to refer back to us, you have our email address. Thanks and remember to look after Dana, she is wonderful.

Another great trip with Exodus!

To start, I would have given an excellent review but for the fact (1) that it’s not very well vehicle supported because of where we were riding. No one had any issues, but for those who would like or are used to significant vehicle support, this is not. It is less than posted in the website; and ((2) the bikes were not very good. (We did the Vietnam bike ride and that was fully supported and had much better bikes). But, the bikes were serviceable.

That being said, the trip was wonderful as the route was beautiful, the places were interesting, the guides were nice, and Peter had a wealth of knowledge about the places. And, to boot, our fellow riders were a great group.

The weather varied, so be prepare for heat and rain. And, the small towns frequently did not take credit cards so be sure to bring lots of cash (or get it from ATM).

The hotels were fine but I think some US travelers would find it significantly different from what they’re used to if, for example, they went with Backroads. For example, a couple of the places had no hair dryers, and one only provided soap. But, we wouldn’t trade this trip for one with the US companies. You ride more with exodus and you get more days. And, who needs a hair dryer when you’re going to have helmet hair anyway? But, I know some people care.

I wished the trip was longer so you could have spent, for example, another night in Vienna. We arrived early and spent time in Prague before the trip started and stayed an extra day in Budapest at the end. We highly recommend that, if you can swing the time. (I guess we’ll have to come back on our own and do Vienna again!)

Overall, great trip. Our second with exodus. Our first was through Vietnam-that was an awesome trip!!! We’ll be back!

Most Inspirational Moment

Vienna-magical! Loved the symphony and the palace!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Peter was great. Hard working, sweet, and knowledgeable. I think we may have overwhelmed him at times with our antics!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Nope

Prague to Budapest Cycle

The riding and scenery, including all towns/cities we stopped at were off-the-dial fabulous.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were too many great moments to single one out. While the major cities more than lived up to their reputations, the wonder of the smaller places we had not heard of was a most welcome surprise - especially the absence of tourists there.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Extremely caring but not the right leader for our cycle trip. He was unfamiliar with the route and his cycling skills were not great. For example, he would often stop without leaving sufficient space for all others to stop safely.

Advice for Potential Travellers

learn the rules of group riding before the trip and obey same.

Suggestions

The only major complaint is that it regularly took 8+ hours to cycle less than 3 hrs, with the result that we always arrived at the day's destination too late to have any time to chill. The rides should be more regulated with fewer, or at least shorter, stops, other than in places that deserved long stops. Also the trip should start with a brief lesson on the rules of riding in a group - ignorance of these rules resulted in several accidents.

Prague to Budapest via Bratislava and Vienna

A collage of cycling and walking tours, learning local histories and enjoying old cities, castles and rivers, mixed with meeting and making friends with the touring group. And don’t forget the food.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was no single "ahh" moment - there were many, with each turn in the cycling path or new vista in sight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Peter not only led the ride and walks, but provided constant narration about what we were looking at. Always ready to answer questions and always working to make our program great. His enthusiasm, if not patience, shone through and was contagious

Advice for Potential Travellers

Aside from being in good riding shape, open your mind to the places and people with whom you are traveling.

A Great Ride!

The best way to see the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary is by bike and taking this fabulously guided tour. These countries are well versed in cycling and have bike paths that go for miles and miles and are in good condition. There is some cycling that happens on main roads but cars are very accommodating of cyclists. The most difficult terrain is in the first couple of days with a lot of undulating hills. For this it is best if you have some cycling experience. Strangely enough the terrain turns flat about half way through the trip which is good for a while but believe it or not as scenic as the countryside is, you’ll find yourself wishing for the odd hill or two just for variety and believe me that’s not something I thought I ever would have said.
Transfers on the bus are minimal compared to other trips which is good because the bus is small and we had an excellent driver so safety was never an issue.
The accommodation included a mix of hotels and pensions. You can expect twin beds which is noteworthy if travelling as a couple. This is the European way and in most cases the beds could be pushed together if you wanted. On only one occasion did we have beds with the springs being not far below the surface and in another there was no hot water which was disappointing after a long days cycle but on the whole they were very satisfactory and everything was well organised upon our arrival. They were also centrally located which was a bonus in the bigger cities.
The spread at breakfast was excellent at every stop. However, I should mention that if you’re gluten free like myself, it is more of a challenge. I picked up some supplies in Prague and carried them with me. Also, the restaurants and cafes we stopped at also don’t cater to gluten free and throw in vegetarian and it can get tricky. Our guide was really helpful in trying to ensure I at least got something at lunch and dinner. There are regular stops near shops to pick up supplies.
You will find the bikes themselves to be heavier than what you’re used to but you soon adapt. They were safely locked away each night and spares are carried in case there are any problems along the way.
Our starts in the morning were at reasonable times which is great if like myself you’re not a morning person. At the end of each day, the following days information would be shared.
There are plenty of breaks throughout the day starting with morning coffee, followed by lunch and an afternoon break on longer ride days. There were a few occasions were it would have been better to push on especially when it was pouring rain and you were soaked as stopping for a lengthy time only allowed you to get cold. My suggestion would be to poll the group and possibly do shorter stops especially when the weather is bad.
Our group spent almost the entire trip together including at night and free time. Dinners were often followed by nightcaps in the hotel bar. A great way to end the day!
It was extremely helpful in the bigger cities that our guide gave us an overview as it really helped us get our bearings for our free time. Our morning tours of some of the smaller towns were a great start to the day and the scenery was spectacular.

Most Inspirational Moment

Surviving the two days of hills and pouring rain and wind when you at times couldn't see what was in front of you. The beauty of the places we visited and the overwhelming sense of history. Getting to know the various people on the group and hearing their stories. Seeing my own cycling ability improve over the days. Stepping out from the metro in Budapest and seeing the Buda side of the city in the late afternoon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dana our group leader was fantastic. She was a wealth of historical information which she was more than willing to pass on to us and educate us about the history behind the countries we were travelling through. Also, her ability to speak the languages was naturally beneficial especially when it came to my getting fed. There were 15 people in our group with a range of cycling abilities and she did an excellent job of keeping us all on track and getting us from A to B each day. She stayed with us at times when she didn't have to and really she was just a lot of fun. Her back up, Hainek was also a lot of fun. He could be relied upon for great discussions on world affairs and knew all the best spots for ice cream. He held up the rear of the group with good grace and always had a smile.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ensure you have water protected rain gear from top to bottom. We ended up using shower caps over our helmets but had nothing to protect the legs and feet. The temperature was cool the morning so prepare to have some layers. Saddle bags were provided so you don't need to being one and for the women, bring your own saddle if you can, I wish I had!

Suggestions

Overall a really great, enjoyable trip and I look forward to the next one!

Stunning, fantastic holiday

Gorgeous architecture, scenic and peaceful cycling route and (mostly) fabulous weather.

Most Inspirational Moment

This is a tough call as it was ALL so stunning however Bratislava was a real treasure and it was possible to see most of it in the short time we were there. Shopping and wandering through the streets was beautiful and visiting the UFO Tower to see incredible sights over all of Bratislava as well as enjoying the restaurant (with excellent service and delicious local cocktails) was very special.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We just loved Dana. She was amazing, very organised and really managed the tour so that is suited everyone.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Enjoy - it's a marvellous trip!

Suggestions

I would like some more information on activities to do in our spare time upon arrival in each place. Also the joining instructions are incorrect in Prague - the airport bus does not join the metro at the place mentioned - apparently this changed 2 years ago.

Prague to Budapest bicycle

It was a good trip. We rode about 30 miles/day, sometimes with hills (northern Czech Republic), but later fairly flat. The riders were in good shape. There were opportunities to rest throughout the day, having beverage/snack/lunch breaks. The lodgings were fine and clean. The breakfasts provided at the lodgings were very good & varied to suit most traveler’s desires. There was good information provided as we traveled about the culture & history of the area. The other travelers were very friendly throughout the trip. It is a very good value for the dollar (or pound or Euro).

Most Inspirational Moment

I feel that the information provided regarding the cultures & histories about the various areas was most interesting.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader was very informative & helpful. I can't think of anything that she could have done better. The assistant leader taught me some things about riding my bicycle which was very helpful. The van driver was very helpful as well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be ready to bicycle. Although nice, this is not a leisurely trip as after bicycling all day, the riders have about 90 minutes to shower & dress so that they can go out to dinner with the others. If you are looking for something more leisurely, check out Exodus' bicycle trip from Vienna to Budapest.

Suggestions

Often the seats of the bicycles were lowered at the end of the day in order to get them into the van. We were not informed of this &, as they had been lowered only a little, were not aware of the change until it started showing up with sore knees. As a result a day and a half of bicycling had to be foregone with the time spent on the van or in the hotel. Also, prior to booking this trip, the information person led us to believe that it would be easier than it was.

Four Countries in 10 days !

This was my 12th holiday with Exodus (my 9th cycle tour) and one of the best, so it is not often I feel that I wish to write a review, so here goes !
This tour is a great way to see four countries and four capital cities of central Europe, all in just 10 days. Our group comprised a friendly bunch – a mix of English, Australian & Americans and with me, the token Scot of the group !We were lead by a very professional team of Dana along with Hynek and driver Lubos.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were a few highlights and memorable moments on this trip. A few of them were: - 1) the free day in Vienna, and I would recommend the morning bike tour round the city centre. We all took this optional tour and it was worth it to see the highlights of the city, and still leaving the rest of the day to see the sites in your own time. 2) I also really enjoyed the cycle from Vienna to Bratislava. I cannot think of any other tour where you cycle from hotel to hotel (capital city to capital city !). 3) Cycling along the Danube, particularly on the last day which included a short ferry ride. 4) The most fun evening was the wine tasting, which we all really enjoyed !

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dana was a lovely person and a great guide. She ran a trouble free tour in a friendly and very professional manner. Assisting her was Hynek who was also great at the back of the back of the group. Our driver Lubos was always there to help with loading/unloading the bikes & luggage and was always keen to try & improve his English !

Advice for Potential Travellers

The first three days or so were hilly but after that the ride is flat.

Suggestions

Go for it !

Well managed bike tour

A well planned tour, very enjoyable and educational.

Most Inspirational Moment

Riding through the Czech National Forest. Seeing and learning the history of the iron curtain.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very accommodating, mature and approachable. It's a real bonus that Jan is from Slovakia and he understands the history and background of the nearby countries. One of our fellow rider had a 'minor' accident on the trip and had to receive medical attention. I think the leaders handled the situation very well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get into decent cycling shape before going on this trip.

Suggestions

It's obvious that this trip had gone through a few iterations of improvements. I think Exodus does it part to conduct its tourism business in a socially and culturally responsible manner.

Fabulous trip

This has turned out to be one of my favourite Exodus trips. Packed with beautiful scenery, fascinating history and varied riding to suit everyone, it’s a real treat. Jan, our guide – supported by the ever-smiling Hynek and Lubos – made everything run brilliantly and created a really fun trip for us.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Czech countryside was a lovely surprise. It's hilly at the start but nothing too tough if you're reasonably fit and we had some lovely downhills too and some cracking views. Every day had special moments, often the surprise of suddenly finding yourself in a forest or the joy of seeing the vastness of the Danube in the last few days.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jan was absolutely superb. He was incredibly knowledgeable about all the areas we visited and our group really appreciated his thoroughness. We also loved the frequent inpromptu stops to pick and eat whatever fruit Jan spotted en route. Top tip - if you want to try lots of fruits you might not get at home make sure you ride near Jan! Jan was also great company - loads of fun - and I also really liked that he wanted everyone to ride at their own pace. This meant everyone felt comfortable and as a smaller group we made really quick progress.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip has a great mix of country and city and it's a brilliant way to get to know something about 4 different countries in just 11 days. It's definitely worth travelling to Prague the day before - it's a lovely city and very welcoming and accessible. Budapest at the end feels very big, busy and urban in contrast to the rest of the trip but I enjoyed having some extra time to explore it.

Suggestions

The wine and beer tasting evenings were a nice bonus. We had some great evening meals too - including for veggies like me. Prepare yourself for massive portions!
