JOYOUS Japan

i have been fortunate in doing many trips around the world and i would say that Japan is one of the top 3 countries – why

the trip covers the old and extensive past history of Japan – from Shoguns (rather violent times but magnificent buildings, and beautiful artwork) to Hiroshima (moving), and the modern with Tokyo, a city of 13million, and clearly the inspiration for Blade Runner neon city (but without the fog)

Japanese people, polite, honesty, impeccable service (only place where you really want to leave a tip – but not allowed too as considered rude), always helpful to lost tourist. I have never visited a country where i have felt so safe at any time of the day

Most Inspirational Moment

The Hiroshima display was moving. The Silver pavilion in Kyoto, its makes you realise a garden does not have to be just lawn, so beautiful and peacefull But I come back to the Japanese people, I dropped my watch at a Station and some young person ran after me to hand back the watch to me and didnt even wait for me to say thank you

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ayaka Tsukamoto Clearly in the top 3 of tour leaders i have had with Exodus (around 20 trips) the effort she put in to make sure the trip was wonderful was amazing. On our days off - she spent time making sure we could see everything we wanted and the best way to achieve it i mentioned, just in passing, whether there was an english language Japanese paper - next day there was one at my hotel door we where given guides for each city and in each guide, by hand, each page was circled with things of interest and what would be covered in the tour and where we could go on our days off Ayaka is a very lovely person and was laughing all the time - we were very very lucky to have her Channa

Advice for Potential Travellers

In Toyko there is two underground companies (Metro/ Toel) and i recommend instead of I/c Pass that you purchase from the ticket office , a metro/toel pass (800 yen- if you have your passport, 900 yen otherwise). Though you can get unused money back from I/C card for 200 yen fee - i found that i kept hopping on and off the tube (easiest way to navigate the city) and would have saved money with the pass Bring an umbrella and good waterproof for the daybag - when it rains it rains heavy all day - there is a reason why Japan is so lush and green

What to do soon

This was a trip of a life time in so many ways. It was a retirement present and a chance to prove we could still do it. It was a chance to see so many animals and different environments and to see a wonderful country determined to benefit from It’s wildlife while protecting this precious resource.
We were guided on the adventure by N’gand who was so knowledgeable and happy to share his love of the wild and his country. Melo, the cook, fed us amazing meals, whether in a layby on route or on an open fire in the bush, we were stuffed with fresh bread and tasty food. Timon and Derek just quietly work on our creature comforts putting up and striking tents, digging the “bushy bushy” and making sure that we were safe and left nothing behind except warm memories. We did games walks and drives and mokoro rides. We saw all the animals on our lists and more besides. Even the ” its just a bird” traveller began to appreciate the diversity out there. There were changes of plan, 2 punctures, one dead rear axle and so much late rain that the salt pans were lakes but all was dealt with so we hardly noticed with Nata being a good substitute, even if meeting other not so well behaved groups reminded us that bird watching needs quiet. It is a trip in the wild with dangers that we are not used to and we had total trust in our team that they would make it the best they could but keep us safe. The Falls are impressive and Zimbabwe provides time to recharge batteries (ours and cameras) as well as washing clothes. The group pulled together well, loading this arthritic pensioner in and out of the bus. We will keep in touch to share amazing photos and memories of this wonderful trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too difficult to say. Drifting on the mokoro trip through the reeds, The polers singing round the campfire. The welcome of the people. Going to sleep in a tent with lion roaring in the distance.. Walking thro the bush. All of it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

N'Gandi was a brilliant leader who was always polite and firm while encouraging us in the right way. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the animals and birds, an interest in people and respect for the countryside. He explained local customs and sensitivities as well as making sure all park rules were obeyed and that we took away only good memories. He was quietly always checking for our safety.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack less, bags get heavy and getting sleeping bags back into full cases each night is impossible. One wind proof top was all I needed, fleece was unused. Also only used trainers, boots were surplus luggage. Charging packs for cameras essential if like me you take thousands of photos. Our scarves were borrowed by those on windy hot seats!

Spectacular and Perfectly Led Trip Round Sardinia

We have just finished the May cycling trip around the South east coast of Sardinia.
Although we were unlucky with some poor weather on the first few days; the quality and enthusiasm of our leader Michelle and his assistant Alesandro more than kept our spirits up. They really were superb and we couldn’t have hope for a more knowledgable and able team to show us around and help us up some of the steeper climbs.
There were however some low points; we did find that for the price of the trip the standard of the accommodation could have been better and also we would have expected some more dinners included.
But all in all we had a wonderful trip around this spectacular part of the island; and had a really lovely group to share it with.

Most Inspirational Moment

The sun finally shining for the whole of the last day; with some stunning scenery to go with it!! The perfect way to finish.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader Michelle was amazing. Very knowledgable; able and enthusiastic. He made us feel very safe all along the trip and was an absolute pleasure to have around. Full marks!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ask for a tour with Michelle!!

Great experience

A special mention must go to the Hotel S’Adde for their warmth and hospitality in general but for their food in particular. I have dietary requirements and I usually expect to eat a limited range of food (and/or have to remind staff at every meal), especially when in a small town off the beaten track. But Michaela and her team had my diet nailed from day 1 and went above and beyond to produce fantastic, appetising alternatives every time. Frankly, you should have this as a USP in your marketing of this trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching Tiscali!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic - patient, thoughtful, experienced...

Walking in Sardinia

This was my first Exodus trio and I loved every minute of it. Having the opportunity to walk in rugged terrain with fabulous views and generally great weather, and being cheerfully cared for in a comfortable hotel made it a week to remember

Most Inspirational Moment

I couldn’t choose just one, but many of the walks were quite challenging, and worth every bit of the effort for the sense of achievement and the stunning scenery

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert was exceptionally kind and polite throughout the trip and happy to share his knowledge about the area and the environment. He frequently checked on everyone’s well being and dealt promptly and efficiently with an incident on the final day when one of our group had a serious fall

Advice for Potential Travellers

It was quite rugged under foot at times, so good boots, poles if desired and plenty of water bottles

Fantastic trip to China

A wonderful trip, packed with great sights and led by a fantastic guide Kangzhu.

Most Inspirational Moment

Lots, but the Great Walk and Yangshuo Light Show were both spine-tingling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kangzhu was amazing. Everything ran smoothly with presumably lots of arranging behind the scenes. She also created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, even with a busy schedule. She helped us all get great food, including non-meat eaters. She definitely went above what was required, helping people find particular gifts, bringing us breakfast on the overnight train and working very long hours. She was a complete star! And very good company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect a busy time!

A wonderful ride in Sicily

Everything about this ride was great. The scenery, the towns we visited, the food, the accommodation, our fellow cyclists and most certainly our guide Iris and her backup team.

Most Inspirational Moment

The ascent to the canyon of Cavagrande del Cassibile and the views from the top, followed by the exhilarating descent to Avola.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Iris was absolutely great in every way.

Beautiful Sicily

We enjoyed a wonderful cycling holiday in Sicily. We now have such an appreciation of Sicily’s rich cultural past, the delicious Sicilian cuisine and the beautiful countryside we cycled through.

Most Inspirational Moment

The thrill at having cycled up the 10km climb and then the joy of riding down the other side on day 6.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Iris is an inspiration! She is so capable, friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. Exodus are very fortunate to have her on their team. A really lovely person in every way.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Come and do the cycling tour in Sicily, you won't be disappointed !

Good walking but a disappointing holiday

I am very much in agreement with the review posted by Bex. Sardinia was beautiful, the unseasonal rain of the weeks before meant it was lush and green amongst the rockiness, and there were lots of flowers in bloom. Most walks were a mix of fairly average difficulty but with very challenging parts, often involving scrambling over boulders and up and down rock faces, which was an enjoyable mix. However the hotel and the town pull this holiday down, both the food and rooms at the hotel really should be better and this would make a real difference. There is quite a lot of time between the walks ending and the late evening meal and it was hard to make good use of this time. I could not honestly recommend this trip because of this. Cala Ganone could work with the walking routes, it is not that far away so any additional “time in bus” before the days walking would be fairly negliable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Both the gorge walk and the walk to Tiscali were really good, both had fun challenging elements and the Tiscalli walk was beautiful varied in scenary.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was perfectly personable and fulfilled the basics of being a group leader, but I have nearly always experienced having a local leader, both world wide and in Europe. My leader last year in Croatia had so much joy and love for his country it bubbled out of him. He made every day come alive with tales about Croatian history and culture which added so much to that trip. I came home from Croatia with so much new knowledge about a country totally unknown to me and a desire to return. I was very disappointed that we were not given this opportunity to learn about Sardinia

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't be a vegetarian, the food at the hotel was not great! The walking is definately more challenging that it sounds but as long as you are happy to scramble and use hands (and bums if short) to get around they are fun and doable.

An amazing Croatia adventure

This is an amazing trip with spectacular scenery and amazing history. It has great variety, with waterfalls, sea views, dramatic gorges and incredible limestone outcrops. On top of all of that, there is a wealth of history with Roman ruins, ancient Christian sites and abandoned farmhouses.

The food is also excellent as are the interesting spirits you are offered with almost every meal! My personal favourite had to be the Herb Raki, but there are lots of choices!

Most Inspirational Moment

The sudden appearance of the dramatic view over the sea at the top of Vidova Gora.

Thoughts on Group Leader

It is impossible to put into words how excellent a leader Žarak is. As well as being very helpful and friendly and highly competent at leading the group, he has an almost inexhaustible supply of knowledge about the history of the region and seems to know all the locals. He made a great trip into an unforgettable one.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you like flowers and are going in April or May, you might want to take a Mediterranean flower book as there are so many flowers to see.
