Discover Sri Lanka

A superb trip with so many varied experiences and one which although most of the major sites were visited also included chances to see day to day Sri Lanka and meet the people whose ever smiling personalties are one of the hallmarks of this beautiful country.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many inspirational moments that prioritising some of them proves rather difficult. The temples, climbing to the top of Sigiriya Rock, the ancient site of Polonnaruwa, exploring Kandy, especially the ceremony in the Temple of the Tooth, but above all seeing a wild elephant emerging from the forest of the Kadulla National Park and then seeing such large numbers of elephants, many with young, on the open plains of the park. Also, seeing a leopard, all be it for only a few seconds, and the other wildlife in the Yala National Park. The whale watching was also another highlight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan has won many awards for running this trip and it is easy to see why. He was able to remain calm at all times, his instructions were always very clear and he drew the group together so that although we were all strangers at the beginning, by the end we felt we had known each other for years! His hidden talent of singing on the penultimate night will always be remembered! He was able to rearrange things at a moments notice, for example when it was obvious that doing the Horton Plains trek was not really feasible in the thick mist that we encountered at the start, he managed to still get us the train ride(well worth it), and a walk to Little Adam's Peak which was at lower altitude and so therefore meant we did get some excellent views.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Most of the general advice has been given in previous reviews but one useful extra we did was to extend our stay by 2 nights to include Colombo which wasn't on the itinerary. Roshan, however, was very helpful to us by changing our extra 2 nights in Colombo to an excellent hotel resort called the Suriya just north of Negombo and getting our transfer there to include a Colombo City Tour. A relaxing way to end a busy tour!

an experience but quite tiring

What you get to see and do is quite an incredible variation: one minute in the hustle and bustle of cities – old and new – next in the snow on mountains, then in the desert and next on the coast! Through all of this you get to experience what Morocco is in terms of a modernising African country but you also get to see that it is not all modern ‘1st world’ living, it hasn’t forgotten or left its past; for me the latter was why I came on this trip.

Even for a premium trip some hotels etc and their locations weren’t great; generally cold, damp and you weren’t exactly encourage to explore the local areas at times.

The trip downtime all but vanished and this left us with very prescriptive days which wasn’t what I expected or wanted. Add to this the very uncomfortable bus seats and you’re left feeling very drained and stiff at the end of most days, but also feeling that you’d not been able to make the most of what you visited. Sometimes you want to get lost in a city to explore it, not jolly around on a ‘follow the brolly’ excursion; for me that’s not an adventure.

Our biggest disappointment was the food. Due to the hotel locations or how your guide presents restaurants there is very little variation beyond beef (or is it goat) / chicken tagines, kebabs and salads. And despite the myriad of spices and herbs in the markets most meals were really very bland.

Overall it was quite an experience and I’m glad I’ve done it.

Most Inspirational Moment

By quite a distance the time in the desert, it is amazing. We had a little bit of time whilst at our auberge to explore the nearby dunes getting a taster of what was to come, but the trip on the camels into proper desert environments and spending the night out in the desert I would happily do again tomorrow. Seeing the wonderful changes of colour as the sun dips down across the dunes, watching the shadows grow and the landscape change is magical.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable but at times quite aloof and trip timing seemed to come from a different time zone - 8 hours journeys were 11 hours+.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would suggest that the rating of leisurely is compared to other tours they do. Whereas we found it ok some didn't; don't expect just gentle inclines or less and for winter tours bring proper walking shoes - trainers won't be good enough. At the back end of Feb early Mar it is a pain knowing what to pack. During the day in the desert it was mid 20's at night though around freezing. Cities at the start were just into double figures but Riads and hotels a little chilly, not so bad if you can get the a/c blowing warm air though.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank Steve for his review, although we sincerely regret that some of the properties on this tour fell below his expectations and that he did not enjoy the food in Morocco. We use client and staff feedback to review each property and if any concerns are raised by clients throughout the year, these will be addressed and dealt with accordingly. We are pleased that Steve overall had an interesting experience; however we have taken both his and Teresa’s (please see above) feedback on board and will make any necessary changes.

Fabulous Trip

Absolutely brilliant trip. Everything I’d hoped for. Loads to see and do. Lovely country, lovely people. Interesting and varied accommodation. Great group of travelling companions.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved it all - but the stand-out moments were the visit to St Clemente, the time in the jungle and shopping in Cuenca.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pablo was excellent - extremely knowledgeable, very friendly and highly organised. Mauricio our driver was also fantastic - I always felt very safe on the sometimes challenging roads.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Things I took which I didn’t need! 1. Mosquito net. 2. Expensive and heavy Electricity voltage converter - the cheap 2- prong adapters worked perfectly well. 3. Thermals and too many cold weather clothes - we really only had one activity where extra layers were required and even then only a fleece and light-weight jacket, although a warm hat was welcome. 4. Beach towel - towels are provided for the hot spring swim and tubing.

Wonderful holiday!

I would recommend this well organised holiday to anyone who wants to explore the diverse landscapes of Costa Rica, as well as see a wide range of wildlife – sloths, monkeys, spiders, frogs, snakes, dolphins, butterflies – as well, of course, birds ( we saw over 100 different types!) The accommodation ranged from good to excellent, and the food was varied and plentiful – not just rice and beans! We were also very fortunate to be with the nicest group of fellow travellers.

Most Inspirational Moment

A difficult question to answer, as there were so many wonderful experiences, but the three days at Drake Bay were very special.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Guillermo was the best of guides. He was patient and kind, he happily shared his love and deep knowledge of Costa Rica with us, as well as ensuring we all took all the photos we wanted. He also added several additional activities, which were appreciated.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you pack Deet, strong suntan cream and a good poncho. Water shoes for any river crossing or the sea, would be useful at Drake Bay.

Colours of Rajihstan

The trip was good, but very fast paced with very little time for any relaxation. We were extremely well looked after and the standard of the hotels were good. The palaces , forts and temples were amazing and we had a local guide to explain all about them, which kept it interesting. The mini safari was good and we had excellent sittings of tiger in the wild. The downside of the trip was the bad air pollution, in all towns, but particularly bad in Delhi . The amount of rubbish in the streets was awful and everywhere which was not good to look at constantly .The standard restaurants and the food in them was very good, and the restaurants were well chosen.
The guide we had was amazing and made the trip really good, by putting in little extra options, like palm reading and henna tattoos.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Tigers in the wild. The town of Udipur was very beautiful and enjoyed the boat trip on the lake.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was excellent, very professional and knowledgeable. He was patient and kind and went out of his way to make sure everything was arranged and timely. He also was honest and humorous. He made the trip excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure to have warm clothes for mini safari as it really is cold in the early morning on the back of open air trucks. Take plenty of hand sanitizer. Take cash to change while over there as it can be arranged very easily in the hotels, a lot of the ATM cash points dont work or are empty and queuing to use them is not great. Take plenty of over the counter medicine with you , in case of stomach upsets, as there are a lot of long drives. Read up on Hindu gods etc before you go as it would make the culture more understandable.

Winter Wanderings

We had never snowshoed before so were a bit apprehensive before the trip, but our nerves quickly dissolved when we arrived. Villa Hermani was excellent, with a strong focus on good quality local dishes and a wholesome experience. The owners Hermann and Katharina are very hospitable and welcoming. We had loads of fresh snow so the conditions for this snowshoeing trip couldn’t have been better. The trip was more tiring than regular hiking, though still was very enjoyable, and the mountain scenery was stunning. Snowshoes and poles are provided; you just need to take a day pack for extra layers, yak traks, lunch, snacks and a thermos of herbal tea.

Most Inspirational Moment

Bran castle was one of the selling points of the trip, and was great to see. We also enjoyed the walks through the forest areas and the peace and tranquility. We took one of the villa's dogs with us on every trip and it was a joy to watch them having so much fun in the snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thomas was a great group leader. He changed the itinerary to suit the weather conditions and was very attune to safety. He let the group spread out during the walks, depending on personal pace, but would stop regularly to regather and check in on everyone. He shared his wealth of local knowledge and experience and was informative and interesting. I’d be very pleased if every tour leader was as engaged as Thomas – he is definitely one of the good ones.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you keep fit in the lead up to the trip and don’t worry about the distances for the longer walks, they are all achievable and the longer walks tend to be less steep. For people who are not great with heights some of the steep sections are nerve-racking but achievable. Don't bother taking a water bladder the pipe just freezes over no mater how well insulated.

Backroads of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a really beautiful country and there is no better way to see it than on a bike with a group of like minded people cycling alongside. This was a special holiday full of interesting and fascinating things to see. It offered a real mix of both challenging and easy enjoyable cycling. Our guide Suresh was nothing short of marvellous. His attention to detail combined with his sense of humour and his care to make sure we always had what we needed was exceptional. I have been on three Exodus holidays so far and this one must surely be the best so far….guaranteed!

Most Inspirational Moment

While on safari we were lucky enough to witness a leapord and her cub come walking towards us to take water at a waterhole. They drank while watching out for danger and then wandered back off into the wild. The moment lasted about five minutes or so and was simply magical.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was marvellous. His attention to detail combined with a great sense of humour was excellent. He went the extra mile on many occasions to make the holiday memorable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

On one or two of the days the cycling is quite challenging where long distances have been combined with significant hill climbs and very hot temperatures. The bus is always available to get onto but don’t underestimate the effort required to make it to the end or top. This holiday is rated a four in effort level and having completed two other cycling holidays that were rated threes, I can confirm that there is a difference!

Great trip, great guides, read the trip notes carefully

I loved the trip – some magical moments and great rides – great company, wonderful food, superb team….Everybody else’s reviews i totally aree with, it was wonderful. But not enough reviews on here tell the full story, so here as some things to be aware of

Too long spent in the bus transferring from place to place – that was a real downer. The transfer to some hotels took hours, and when we arrived their didnt seem any reason why that location was chosen, especially in the early part of the trip in the south. The days are really full-on, dont expect any time for site seeing and lazing around. Very early starts every day.

A couple of days had rides that were almost boring – long main roads just nocking out the KM’s. I think exodus could plan these a little better. I’d have preferred more backroads, even if that meant lower quality hotels at the end of it.

Most Inspirational Moment

The downhill descent from Dalat was great fun and lifted the whole group. The cocktail party on the overnight train helped pass the time. But the kids running out to try and get a hi5 or a simple hello really made it.... and oh yes, helping a lady upright her overladen moped that had gone off the side of the road was a moment i'll never forget.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Happy Buddha was probably the hardest working guide we have had. His attention to detail was faultless - checking into hotels - and out - was a breeze because he booked rooms ahead and arranged all of the passport copies - and that can gain you 30 mins a day so priceless on such a hectic trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

the coach to Ha Long bay and back was 4 hours each way, which is a bit of a drag. We learned afterwards that there was a seaplane that cost $175, took 45 mins. We really wished that we'd pre-booked that for a flight back to Hanoi - it would have been unforgettable ! Also, you wont need half as many clothes as you think. Dont overpack, lots of opportunities for very cheap laundry. However, take a washing line so that you can dry stuff that youve hand washed.

What a fantastic experience. From beginning to end we cannot fault this brilliant trip, so well organised with a wonderful enthusiastic guide, Jorge and a brilliant driver Alejandro. We took advantage of opting for the direct flight on BA which meant an extra night at the beginning and and end of the trip, all organised by Exodus with pickup and drop-off and extra nights at the wonderful hotel in San Jose, Hotel Presidente. The wildlife had me glued to my binoculars, the knowledge imparted by Jorge and his ability to spot the furthest bird and animal never ceased to amaze us all plus the interesting information he gave us about his beloved Costa Rica.

Most Inspirational Moment

It is difficult to pick a moment as they kept coming with every new location. The varied itinerary meant that we constantly had the wooh moments. Various types of rainforest the difference between the Caribbean coast and the Pacific coast. The wonderful lodges set in mind blowing settings.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jorge was so enthusiastic and his pride and love for his country ran through every moment of the trip. He organised everything so efficiently and ended up as a friend. From every aspect he made sure we got to locations before the crowds and he made sure we used the best restaurants he knew. his knowledge of the fauna and wildlife was exemplary, theanks to him we saw at least 150 species of birds and he often had extra little treats up his sleeve.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get the direct flight from BA and enjoy the extra days in San Jose, so much to see and do and that extra day at the end allowed us to wind down and take time to reflect on everything we had done and seen plus pick up momentos from the local artisan market.

Costa Rica - Pura Vida

This was a fantastic introduction to Costa Rica, which packed in so much in the space of two short weeks. The itinerary took in both coasts and led us from the steamy heat to the cool of the cloud forest, enabling us to see a huge range of birds and some interesting animals during a range of walks both during the day and at night. Views everywhere are stunning and the Costa Rican people an absolute delight. We stayed two nights in each place we visited, which meant that we weren’t constantly on the move and could have a full day exploring each location. The travel days were also not too onerous, with time on the road 3-5 hours at a time (with pleant of breaks).

All of the accommodation was good, some more basic than others but all of a good standard. All the rooms were large with plenty of space. The food on this trip was fantastic; quite a few meals were included and were delicious. The food generally in Costa Rica is amazing – even if you order a humble burger it will taste lovely and will generally be made from high quality meat!

Some walks/trips were included and some were optional. These were all explained well and if you fancied time to chill out, you could opt out of one or more of these. I missed a jungle walk at Esquinas Rainforest Lodge but when you see the setting for the swimming pool you will see why!

If you want a trip to really whet your appetite to see more, this is it. All in all this was a great trip, not in the least because of our tour guide, Jorge. If you get him you know you are in safe hands. Pura Vida!

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a sloth moving around - they don't move that much, but when they do they can really go. Swimming in the Pacific at Manuel Antonio before the crowds arrived - warm! Who knew! Seeing crocodiles and alligators at Tortuguero. Ziplining above the forest at Monteverde. And so many more...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jorge made the trip. Pure and simple. He was inspirational, enthusiastic, funny, passionate and a great storyteller. I thought he judged our group very well and I get the feeling that he tweaks his tours to fit with the people he is guiding to great success. He said enough (but not too much) and led a few walks earlier in the morning to beat the crowds. It takes a lot to get me up for a 5.30am start but his enthusiasm got to me and I did every one. His knowledge of birds is encyclopaedic and he was very patient. Getting up early to Quetzal spot was an experience and we saw not one but two thanks to him. He shared his love for his country and it definitely rubbed off. Alejandro was a great driver, with a great sense of fun and who kept the bus spotless.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a poncho. You can get away with light walking shoes rather than boots as long as they are waterproof. some walking sandals were also invaluable. I would definitely get some local currency for incidentals (coffee, beer etc). Dollars are widely accepted but your change will be in colones and the rate is not good everywhere. Get a card loaded with Stirling which which will allow you to pay in local currency (widely available now). Easy to use your card in many places.Take a hat and gloves if you go looking for Quetzals in Savegre. DO get a direct flight to San Jose. We stayed an extra day either end in order to do so and therefore avoided the terrible experience of having to travel via the USA. It was also great to have the extra day both sides. San Jose is a lovely laid back city to spend some time in. Go on the free walking tour which starts outside the National Theatre at 10am. We had a four-hour tour on the first day with Amal which really helped us to get our bearings (you don't have to have that long, we were just keen). DO go to the bar to the left of the entrance to the Presidente Hotel (bar 303). It is a local's bar where the beer is cheap (especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and the welcome is wide. Finally, remember that you are going to lovely places which also attract other tourists. If you are looking for a tour which is remote and where you won't have to rub shoulders with other people this is not for you. We did have to share some hotels with other tour groups but this did not impact on the experience and was managed very well, resulting in the fact that it never felt crowded or detracted from the experience.
