Busy Two Weeks

Came away feeling that I saw and experienced heaps more than I would have done as an independent traveller. Added bonus was having a good group of fellow travellers which is always a bonus as everyone seemed to gel pretty well.

Most Inspirational Moment

The smiling faces of the children as we cycled through many of the villages notwithstanding the high fiving which played havoc with my tennis elbow!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rit is a true gentleman with a good sense of humour and top class organisational skills.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Potential for saddle soreness should not be underestimated. Padded cycling shorts, gloves, water bottle and sunglasses are essential. Best do this tour during rainy season as landscape will be likely be green and lush. For non-cyclists such as myself, I found the cycling quite demanding particularly the first few days though there's always the support vehicle should it be needed - though thankfully I never succumbed to the temptation!

Amazing - I loved the desert

What an experience – trekking in the desert is like nothing I have ever done before. I loved the space, the quiet and the rhythm of the actual walking. The stars at night were unbelievable. The food for us veggies was excellent and really varied and tasty. I felt that I had grown by this whole experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved it all - but the actual walking in the desert was really the highlight for me - I didn't want to leave the desert on day five! Burdah Bridge was fun ( when I had struggled to get to the top). Petra is huge and awe-inspiring.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had a very knowledgeable group leader who was passionate about his country. At Petra he was an excellent guide with all the historical facts at his fingertips. He also had a wicked sense of humour at times!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a large hat, suntan lotion, walking trousers with legs that can unzip, a good camera, numerous changes of clothes and a sense of adventure.

Trekking the Great Wall

Fantastic mixture of walking and cultural insights into Chinese culture and history

Most Inspirational Moment

Loads!!!! But watching the sun come up on the Great Wall was pretty special. Also, loved the early morning visit to the Temple of Heaven park in Beijing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dennis was fantastic - was great to have a Chinese guide with to provide such informed insights into China- past and present. Also helped that Dennis had a great sense of humour and nothing was too much tropuble.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Food was variable and some accommodation was a little nippy at night. But no real complaints as came prepared and the trip was excellent value for money.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

A lovely trip in a beautiful part of Italy, the walks were well planned and thought out with good variety of scenery and challenge. The group leader was brilliant and helped make the trip a really enjoyable experience. The family run hotel was warm and welcoming and the chef provided an excellent variety of meals. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who even got up extra early on our last morning to ensure we had breakfast before leaving at 6am. There were extra treats such as a seafood demonstration and a pizza night on two of the evenings, with guests invited to take part. In all my years of walking holidays I would say this was definitely the best one.

Most Inspirational Moment

It's hard to pick one out from a number of such moments. The first view of the Amalfi coast on our first outing, and many subsequent views as we took the various walks were all breathtaking. As we ascended to the top of Monte Tre Calli, the Sorrentino Peninsula came fully into view and that was well worth the steep path to the top. The Walk of the Gods must be one of the most beautiful individual walks with the amazing views of Positano, and also the walk through Valle delle Ferriere N.P. to Ravello was a memorable experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was without doubt the best leader I have met on all the walking holidays I have taken over the years. He was well organised, whilst calm and unflappable, and very considerate to the needs of all the group. His knowledge of the countryside and the flora and fauna, as well as the language, was most impressive. He was also a very likeable character, with a great sense of humour, who got on well with all the group members. And he was very thoughtful in judging when people needed a rest or a drink etc. He earned the respect of all the group and his efforts were greatly appreciated.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would encourage prospective travellers to ensure they read the trip notes thoroughly, and make sure they take walking boots as well as lightweight walking trainers, and also a walking pole for the steeper sections of the walks.

Iceland Northern Lights

Excellent trip – great group (aged 37-60, 50:50 male:female) and excellent guide

Most Inspirational Moment

The icebergs floating on the lake and the sea, with the clear blue sky behind. White Russian Cocktails in Bar Lebowski's, Reykjavik. I was surprised at how barren then landscape is - it's worth seeing. We did see the Northern lights (not the best but they were there). At Hotel Laki you can book a wake-up call if they appear!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ingibjorg (Ibi) was excellent. She is also a Ranger at the national park so very knowledgeable and she led us on the Glacier and in the Caves. She even provided hot flasks of drinks and snacks in the bus to help with the biting cold wind!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for the biting wind - take warm layers - thermal leggings, a balaclava, ski gloves. Waterproofs (jacket & trousers) are a must to keep out the wind and also you walk behind one of the waterfalls. Take walking boots for the crampons on the Glacier and also to keep out the cold. Book an extra day to see Reykjavik - there are free local walking tours - it's easy to get around and not very big but worth the effort.

Sierra de Aitana

Great walking – shame about the rain and snow (in April!) but the guides made the right decision about curtailing and altering walks where the climbs would have been dangerous in wet weather. If you want to get away from it all this is the place to be. Most days we saw no one else walking. This is an unexplored area of Spain.

Getting to the top of Puig Campana in perfect weather - fantastic views over the sea and mountains.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had 2 leaders for different parts of the week (Jaime and Jose Miguel) - both were very good and supportive. The perfect climb would have been to have had both at the same time! Very good sense of humour which is always essential. And they created great sandwiches.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take hat and gloves and waterproofs (including over trousers) even if the trip notes don't say it! You need to be reasonably fit and not to to be put off by small amounts of scrambling and difficult terrain. And steep ascents!

GREEK ISLAND WALKING HOLIDAY

The holiday started in Athens as we established our group and departed for Paros. The hotel was perfect on the edge of the coast with stunning views, the gentle walking helped to break us in for what was to come later. Then on to Santorini, a beautiful island with narrow alley-ways full of shops and café/bars. The coastal walk was exquisite meandering up and down the coastal path away from the tourist elements. Followed by a trip to the Centre of the volcano the following morning (lots of steps down!). On to Naxos and a feel for the real Greece as the walks inland showed much of the normal way of life. The walking was leisurely, but you needed to be comfortable with your balance. A beautiful countryside village was the destination. Absolutely fantastic holiday which was made all the better by an excellent guide and friendly group of travellers.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walks on the Island of Naxos provided a real feel for Greek life. Very little tourism to spoil the island.

Excellent tour leader - very knowledgeable about the Islands and extremely well organised.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You need walking shoes - not boots, especially if you are steady on your feet.

CYCLING VIETNAM

Excellent cycling, food, scenery, group of people , experiences and very likeable and knowledgeable leader, Lam.

Most Inspirational Moment

Quite a few. Cycling the back lanes and seeing the locals in their field of crops, also the Van pass both up and down. The food was excellent throughout, Lam taking us to many good local restaurants. The overnight train journey and stay on the boat in Halong Bay together the kayaking to see monkeys on the cliffs of one of the peaks were memorable. The food on the boat was best of the holiday. The hotels were all comfortable but we stayed in two 5* ones which were both magnificent and totally unexpected as part of the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lam was sociable, knowledgeable and a very good leader. Always enthusiastic, smiling and was the perfect host for the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go & enjoy it. Prepare for the 300 miles of cycling, whilst much was on the flat you still need a reasonable level of fitness, to cope with heat. You are able to have 2 laundry services along the way which are well organised and cheap.

Wonderful trip

To get an insight into the real Morocco and its varied geography, people and villages, this trip is a must. Staying in a different location every night was fine. Although there were some long drives, they were interspersed with photo stops, visits so that none seemed too long. Our driver was excellent. One lady suffered from travel sickness and was not looking forward to the Atlas Mountains switchback roads. She was fine and commented on the good driving.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sleeping out under the stars in the Sahara. Having tea at a local house in the Atlas Mountains where we were shown how to brew true Moroccan tea and to sample some delicious home made bread, pancakes and doughnuts. Yum.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was organised. The kitty meant that one didn't have to worry about money or tipping. Everything was taken care of.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Join the tour. I went because my friend chose it and I was not expecting to come home saying that it was one of my most memorable holidays.
