Hi Gill. Yes, I will be joining you with my husband.

Hi Gill. Yes, I will be joining you with my husband.

Hi Christine

Great to hear from you.

Are you on the Sri Lankan airlines flight from Heathrow?

I'm going with my cousin but we are flying separately

Have you been to Sri Lanka before?

Gill

Hi Gill

Sorry, I did reply from my phone but for some reason it didn't get sent.  Yes, we will be on the flight from Heathrow, is that the one you will be on? This will be our first trip to Sri Lanka so not really sure what to expect. How about you?

I'm on the Sri Lankan Airways group flight from Heathrow but my cousin isn't. I've just contacted Exodus and there are 6 people on the trip altogether but I forgot to ask if they were on the group flight. If you want to meet before the flight I will have a very distinctive carry on bag - a black Jansport backpack with a blue/green/yellow bird design on it and a green turtle hanging from it.

We've both been to Sri Lanka before, on the same trip (Exodus Discover Sri Lanka) but at different times. I went 12 years ago and absolutely loved it. It's incredibly beautiful and interesting and the people were lovely. We both wanted to go to the north, which wasn't possible when I went before, but also to go back to some of the places we'd been to previously so that's why we booked this trip. I'm interested to see what Galle is like in particular as it was still devastated from the Tsunami when I went.

Hi Gill, yes it would be lovely to meet you before the flight and I am sure between us we will find you.  I do have a  question you may be able to help me with.  Exodus have advised us to wait until we reach Colombo airport before we exchange our money and have assured us our guide will allow time for this.  Do you remember if you did this before?

Hi Christine

Yes, we will be able to do this, and change back again on the way back. The Sri Lankan rupee can’t be taken outside the country. I’ve had the same in a few places, eg Russia and Cuba. The guide will wait for us to do what we need to do and will probably have good advice on where to get the best exchange rate, how much to change etc. We should also be able to use ATMs in some places but it’s best to take some cash to change just in case your card doesn’t work - you don’t want to get stuck without any funds. I usually find the advice in the trip notes is good but sometimes things have moved on a bit. ATMs may be more frequent and more usable than they suggest, or they may be exactly as described. See the money section of this, about half way down the page https://www.travelex.com.au/travelex-hub/travel-guides/sri-lanka

Hi Gill, thanks for that I feel reassured now.  I have read shoulders and knees need to be covered in temples which is what I would expect and generally I dress respectfully. I do however have shorts which finish above the knee - only just! and a strapless, ankle length sun dress. Any idea if these would offend? I have looked at photos showing tourists in vests and 'short' shorts so am unsure.

Hi Christine

I dont feel qualified to advise you on what to wear but see what your guide book says and read this

https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forums/asia-indian-subcontinent/sri-lanka/dress-for-female-travelers-to-sri-lanka?page=1

Also bear in mind that we will not be staying in tourist beach resorts but will often be off the beaten track.

What am I planning to wear? Mostly t shirts with short sleeves and cropped trousers that go just below the knee so that my shoulders and knees will be covered, but that’s what I’ve mostly been wearing this summer anyway. I’ll probably take some shorts that go to just above the knee for the beach and long trousers for the evenings. I’ll have a sarong and a long sleeved shirt in my day bag for covering up at temples if what I’m wearing isn’t enough there.

Hi Gill, very many thanks for that.  It's been really helpful.  I did read some guide books but the forum really answered my questions in more detail.  I also have crop trousers and t shirts ready to take, so think I'm on the right track.  Like you I will also have a sarong and long sleeved shirt in my bag if necessary.  Not long to go now, I'm really looking forward to the trip.  See you soon.
