Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Start Boston

Welcome to Boston, the largest city in New England. Boston is awash with things to do, and if you’re hoping to combine revolutionary heritage with cobbled streets and one of the best park systems in America then there’s no better option on the East Coast. Discover Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, located along the waterfront with plenty of opportunity to eat and shop. Enjoy your chance to explore the city before you meet your Appalachian Mountain Guides tomorrow at 07:30 hrs.

  • Day 2

White Mountain National Forest and Highland Center at Crawford Notch

This morning you leave Boston for the start of your backcountry walking adventure in the beautiful White Mountains National Forest in the East. You’ll meet your Appalachian Mountain Guides and your group and have a welcome meeting, where your guides will brief you on the adventure ahead. After lunch you will enjoy an easy 4.6 miles hike which is a great way to get to know your group and stretch your legs, before heading into the stunning White Mountains National Forest.

    Meals included: Dinner
  • Day 3

    Galehead

Hut From here on out, your true backcountry experience begins. Start early with a drive to the Gale River Trailhead and hike up to the Garfield Ridge. Your destination is Galehead Hut, which is the most remote of the White Mountain huts and boasts stunning views from the porch. After arriving at the hut, the summit of Mount Galehead can be climbed before dinner. As the sun sets in the surreal landscape, prepare yourself and your camera for sunset.

By advancing to the summit of Galehead Mountain, this adds one mile and 250 feet (76m) in elevation

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 4

    Zealand Falls Hut

Today you reach South Twin, a wonderful section of the trail, but you’ll need to be prepared for a steep ascent of 350 metres (1,150 ft.). En route to the next hut you’ll scale the trail over Mount Guyot and Mount Zealand. You’ll pass lakes on the trail where you might want to take a dip depending on the weather. In the evening you can enjoy talks conducted by the hut hosts who are specialists in the flora and fauna of the area.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 5

    Mizpah Hut

Choose to hike one of the oldest maintained trails in the USA, the Crawford Path, or summit some of the ‘Southern Presidential Peaks’ on the Webster Cliff Trail, part of the official Appalachian Trail. The Crawford Path is a hike along the Webster Cliff Trail and allows you the opportunity to summit Mount Webster and Mount Jackson.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 6

    Lakes of the Clouds Hut

Over the next few days the stunning alpine scenery will leave you awestruck. Today you’ll hike to the wonderfully named Lakes of the Clouds Hut. This is the highest hut on the tour and you’ll be treated to some incredible views of the Presidential Range. This area can have extreme weather changes and you may experience high wind speeds as you hike through this rugged terrain. The Webster Cliff Trail goes from the hut up to summit of Mount Clinton. Just beyond the summit, you pick up the Crawford Path to go over Mount Eisenhower, Mount Franklin, and Mount Monroe. In the afternoon you head up to Mount Washington with light packs (2.8 miles / 4.5km - 3 hours).NB: The entire day from Mount Clinton onward is above the tree line and all summits are weather permitting.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 7

    Madison Hut

Hike along the backbone of the Presidential Range and, weather permitting, you’ll be in for a real treat. With the opportunity to summit a selection of peaks, make sure you also take the short and easy hike to Star Lake, which offers beautiful reflecting views of Mount Madison.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 8

Joe Dodge Lodge at Pinkham Notch - Boston

This morning you’ll have the chance to summit Mount Madison or take a less strenuous route back down. This is dependent on the group’s stamina and whether there are enough customers for two Appalachian Mountain guides. When returning from Mount Madison down the Air Line, you’ll enjoy excellent views of King Ravine. In the late afternoon you make your way back towards Boston where the tour ends upon arrival. The plan, subject to hiking time, is to arrive back to Boston at approximately 17:00 – 17:30 so it is advisable not to book a flight prior to 21:00.

Essential Info

This In-depth tour offers an experiential journey of the White Mountains section of the Appalachian Mountains. This tour has been specifically crafted to suit those looking to travel shorter distances but dig deeper into national parks and monuments, and benefit from specialist guides with expert local knowledge. This tour includes more meals, plus a host of unique hikes to ensure a once-ina-lifetime holiday experience.

Visas

United States

British, New Zealand, Swiss and most EU passport holders do not need a visa (and enter the country under the Visa Waiver Program), provided they are in possession of an onward air ticket when entering the USA. Visas for the USA are required by some nationalities and it is always best to check with the relevant embassies. All passengers travelling to and from the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are required to hold a machine-readable passport (MRP). A MRP has the holder's personal details, e.g. name, date of birth, nationality and their passport number contained in two lines of text at the base of the photo page. This text may be read by machine. The US now charges $14 for the visa waiver program and must be paid by credit card. The US authorities have introduced a mandatory requirement for all passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme to register for an Electronic Travel Authority. As of 21 January 2016, any person who has travelled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria since March 2011, or have dual nationalities of these countries, may no longer qualify for the VWP. For additional specifics about the VWP please consult the VWP information on the U.S. Embassy London website. More information and all necessary Internet links can be found at www.exodus.co.uk/Usvisa

Vaccinations

United States

There are no mandatory vaccinations required for this trip.

Eating and Drinking

All meals are included whilst on trek.

Weather

The autumnal tour departures are famous for the changing colours of the forest and tour space during these months sells fast. It is worth noting that the weather can be more temperamental with a greater chance of rain. Therefore it is a trade off; if you prefer a higher chance of rain and glorious views of vibrantly coloured forest, or if you prefer a greater chance of clear weather when hiking the trails during the summer months.

Is this trip for you?

This tour is operated in partnership with our sister company Grand American Adventures (GAA). As such the departures are not exclusive to Exodus and groups may be a mixture of Exodus, Grand American Adventures, and other clients. This trip is booked through Exodus and you will receive the same award winning customer service that you are used to. GAA operate with the same core principles used by Exodus and champion the benefits of small group travel.

This is true back-country hiking and although not for the faint-hearted, the rewarding scenery is simply incredible so nature lovers and photographers will be in heaven. With daily trekking beneath and above the tree line and expert Appalachian Mountain Club guides leading the way, this tour offers a rare and privileged glimpse into the flora, fauna and trails along the White Mountains section of the Appalachian Trail. This is your chance to leave behind the modern world in favour of magnificent vistas, excellent hiking company, and a back-to-basics experiential trip of a lifetime.

You’ll be walking from point to point and there will be no transport available until the final day, so a degree of fitness and good hiking experience is required. You will be carrying your own luggage on this walking tour, so please ensure you have a well-fitted and adjustable backpack. This is a true ‘back to basics’ natural experience and an incredible journey for the more adventurous traveller. Due to the strenuous nature of this tour it’s important you are physically fit and have no serious pre-existing medical conditions which could affect your enjoyment of this tour. It’s necessary that all persons joining this tour fill out a medical form to confirm this trip is suited to you.

We recommend adding additional days onto your trip to explore everything that Boston has to offer.

Although each tour follows an itinerary, there is a certain amount of flexibility and from time to time your mountain guide may suggest changes. This may be due to trail conditions, bad weather or advice to alter the itinerary due to storms. Flexibility is key and often a side diversion will be a highlight of the tour. Hikes cannot be guaranteed and may vary depending on ability, group interest, local weather conditions and time of year.

Accommodation

1 hotel and 6 nights in basic huts

For over 125 years the White Mountains hut system has offered hikers young and old a bunk bed for the night in spectacular locations, with all the necessities. The huts are basic in nature and without the modernities one would usually expect when staying in a city hotel. Please be clear these huts cannot be compared to a hotel or lodge and hikers will be sharing a dormstyle room with travellers on a multi-share and multi-sex basis. There are varying rooming arrangements from six bed dorms to 60 bed dorms (not all in one room) and although we have requested the smaller dorms with fewer beds, this cannot be guaranteed until arrival at the hut. There is no way around this as they generally work on a first come and first served basis.

Please note there are no showers available and bathrooms have only cold running water for washing. Please bring your own towel and wash cloth. There are no single supplements available.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.

a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
