Tanzania is Africa at its most iconic – the Serengeti plains, the spice island of Zanzibar and mighty Kilimanjaro

Tours in Tanzania

Tanzania holidays have so much to offer. For this is a country that boasts Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar, to say nothing of the Mikumi National Park, Usambara Mountains and Mount Meru.

It's a country to be recognised both in terms of wildlife and beauty. And for many people, Tanzania is the ultimate safari destination. The Serengeti is home to the extraordinary migration and to be there in the early months of the year is always rewarding. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. To stand astride Uhuru Peak watching the dawn is a remarkable achievement. The climb is tough but not technical and we use the Lemosho and Rongai routes, the least trekked trails on the mountain.

As a contrast to the exciting game areas and the mountain, Zanzibar is a beautiful jewel in the Indian Ocean. With a fascinating spice and trading legacy, crumbling Stone Town has streets full of character, and the beaches on the north and east coasts are stunning. Whether it's diving, snorkelling, fishing, swimming with dolphins or pure relaxation, Zanzibar has few equals, if any.

Highlights of Tanzania trips

1. Mount Kilimanjaro: The highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro rises more than 4.5km high above the plains – it's so high that even this close to the equator it's still capped with snow. It has become especially popular because it’s not technical and requires no specialist equipment, allowing adventure nuts without much trekking experience the chance to take on one of the most exhilarating challenges of their lifetime. This is not a trivial trek, but exceptional views, mountain beauty, contrasting climate zones as you ascend and an incomparable sense of achievement as you reach the 'Roof of Africa' make every tough step worth it. Whether you choose the Rongai or Lemosho route, Exodus allows an extra day to acclimatise, which can make all the difference to reaching the summit.

2. See the Serengeti: The natural spectacle of the Serengeti has been so heavily documented that just the word conjures up images of treeless wide plains, teeming with wildebeest, zebras and gazelles harassed by lions, cheetahs and leopards hiding in the long grass. Now imagine seeing that in the flesh, African sun on your face, wind in your hair as you follow this famous migration on a game drive. This is one adventure holiday experience you don’t want to miss.

3. Gaze across the Ngorongoro Crater: Rich natural resources and the 600m-high walls keep the abundant wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater from ever migrating and have created a natural 'zoo'.

4. Zanzibar: The idyllic island of Zanzibar combines heavenly beaches, exceptional diving and a traditional way of life on the shore, in the cobbled alleys and chaotic bazaars of the towns. It's a place where you can spend one day snorkelling in clear seas with dolphins diving in the distance, then eat from street stalls as you inhale the pungent smells of the spice market the next.
