Ethiopia Project

Project Summary

OVERVIEW:

Kindu Trust kids at their desk in the classroom, Ethiopia projectWhichever way poverty is defined, Ethiopia finds itself at the bottom of the table as one of the poorest countries in the world. This has a direct impact on child nutrition and many children across the country do not have access to a balanced diet. Working with a local charity, The Kindu Trust, who, amongst other activities, run a nursery and club providing various activities and educational support to disadvantaged children, Exodus’ initial aim is to provide hot meals every week for each child that visits the centre based in Gondar.

LATEST UPDATE

In February 2012 two of our groups visited the nursery and club arranged by The Kindu Trust for the children of Gondar. They were impressed by the enthusiasm of the local staff and immediately wanted to help. With more and more children joining the centres, Exodus decided to support the great work of the local charity and ensure every child who visits The Kindu Trust centre in Gondar will receive one hot meal every week.
Discover Ethiopia and Ethiopia: Simien Mountains Trek both go through Gondar and clients on these trips have the opportunity to visit The Kindu Trust Centre.

WHAT IS THE PROJECT ALL ABOUT? Click here to find out ...

The Kindu Trust was originally set up in 1998 to help street children in Gondar. Today the Trust works with children from disadvantaged families as well as their siblings, families and community.  This is done through a number of ways, from sponsoring children to ensure they can achieve their full potential, implementing income generating activities (such as facilitating a group of women to come together to produce injera, an Ethiopian flat bread, which is now sold to the university), funding vocational training and other local projects as well as examining other ways of helping the community as a whole. The growing number of families approaching the Trust is testimony to the positive view they have amongst the community. Furthermore, many of the local Ethiopian staff are members of the community the Trust works with.

Amongst their various activities, the Trust has a centre where the children they work with can come. There is a nursery for younger kids and a club with activities and supplementary education for the older children. The children are encouraged to come to the centre once a week. Many of these children do not have access to a balanced diet. Exodus is raising money in order to provide a hot meal a week for every child that comes to the centre, ensuring that they receive at least one decent meal a week. This particular project will be a rolling project year on year and, on the back of which, we hope to support other projects that benefit the community at large.

WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE? Click here to find out ...

Our aim for the 2012/2013 season is to start with a simple but needed project, providing hot meals to every child that visits The Kindu Trust centre in Gondar. Having taken into account the cost of a hot meal and the number of children who generally visit the centre every week, we estimated the cost of providing hot meals every week to every child to be £1,200 a year. Exodus’ aim, therefore, is to raise enough money to cover the costs of these hot meals.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

  1. If you are planning on visiting Ethiopia on one of our trips, please make everyone in your group aware of what Exodus is doing. Help us spread the word!
  2. If you are visiting Ethiopia on either Discover Ethiopia (AYE) or The Simien Mountains Trek (TYE), you will have the opportunity to visit The Kindu Trust’s centre in Gondar. Here you can learn a little more about the work they do and purchase crafts (such jewellery, baskets, place mats and others) produced by members of the community.
  3. If you get home and find that you have a few leftover Birr (Ethiopian currency) you can send it to Tom Harari, Exodus Travels, Grange Mills, Weir Rd., SW2 0NE, London, UK. This change will be collected and added to the donations.
  4. Any extra funds will make a huge difference to help us reach our goal. You can make a donation by clicking on the link at the top of this page.
