A running focused fitness week aimed at improving fitness and speed

With deserted beaches, vast forests, numerous lakes and rivers, Estonia is the perfect destination for a week of outdoor activities and fitness. This week aims to improve your general fitness and stamina with a running focus and the goal of improving your 5km running time. Our week begins in the picturesque capital of Tallinn, staying in a delightful spa hotel. From here we will kick start the programme with a mixture of running, spin class and interval training with enough time for a walking tour of this fascinating city. We then head to Otepaa, a small town nestled in the southern Estonian hills. Here we will enjoy a variety of cardio exercises whilst exploring our beautiful surroundings, from running on forest trails to swimming in tranquil lakes. Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Fly to Tallinn

Fly to Tallinn; transfer to hotel (approximately 20 min). To ensure we get a good night's sleep the group briefing will be held tomorrow morning however your leader will be on hand to answer any immediate questions.

  • Day 2

Coastal run, guided city tour & spin class

We have an early start today beginning with a gentle, pre breakfast jog along the Baltic coast (approximately 5km). Following breakfast our leader will hold our welcome meeting to discuss the itinerary for the week and answer any questions. After this we will have a guided walking tour of the old town. Tallinn is famous for being the best preserved mediaeval city in Northern Europe with winding, cobbled streets, gothic spires and enchanting architecture. Early evening we will have a spin class (a fun indoor static cycling session to music), after those with tired muscles can go make use of the numerous saunas and Jacuzzi the hotel has to offer.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 3

Interval session, transfer to Otepaa, hike, lake swim and volley ball

Our morning begins with a high intensity interval session with exercises designed to improve strength and speed. Following breakfast we say goodbye to Tallinn as we transfer by private bus to Otepaa (approximately 3 hours). After settling in to our new hotel and having lunch we lace up our boots and head out on a mountain hike to explore our surroundings. Don’t forget to bring your swimwear as those who wish can go for a refreshing dip in a lake (over 6% of Estonia is covered in beautiful lakes!). Before dinner those still with energy to burn can take part in a friendly volley ball match.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 4

    Running session & mountain biking

Today sees us head to the Tehvandi stadium with its 200m athletics track (situated next to our hotel). Here we will undertake a speed running session aimed at improving our 5km running time. After some relaxation time and lunch we will head out on our mountain bike adventure. The terrain will be non-technical but with enough undulation to ensure we get a good workout!

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 5

Day in Voru; trail running, boxercise & lake swim

Today we head for Voru, (approximately 35 minute bus transfer)  a picturesque small town with distinctive wooden houses and a popular ski resort in the winter. Here we find a myriad of picturesque running trails to explore on our group run. This will be followed by a boxercise session (using boxing techniques to ensure maximum cardio work out and muscle tone). Following a leisurely lunch there will be the chance for a refreshing dip in the lake before heading back to our hotel.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 6

Viking boat rowing & circuits class

This morning we head to the River Tartu (approximately 1 hour) where we step aboard our Viking Boat (depending on group size we will be in either 1 or 2 boats). This will be a test of upper body strength as we power ourselves down the river. It won’t all be hard work as once we have had a good enough work out we can switch on a motor and cruise down the gentle stretches of the river, whilst listening to stories of the Vikings and their traditions told by our captain. The afternoon will see us returning to the Tehvandi for a circuits class.

    Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 7

5km run, boxercise & abdominal strengthening

Essential Info

Visas

Estonia

British passport holders do not require a visa. Other nationalities should check with the relevant authorities.

Vaccinations

Estonia

There are no specific health risks.

Eating and Drinking

All breakfasts are included.

Lunches and dinners (not included) will be taken in the hotels or in local restaurants. Cuisine in Estonia is often centred around pork, veal, fish, potatoes, sauerkraut and soups such as borsch (beetroot soup with meat). Dumplings are also very popular. Desserts include mannavaht (a cream made of semoline and juice or fruit), pancakes and rhubarb pies.

Weather

The climate of Estonia can be described as a typical European continental influenced climate with warm, dry summers and fairly severe winters. Summers are fairly short (mid June to late August) and temperatures are likely to be around 22 degrees celsius. That said the weather can be changeable throughout the year so it could rain at any moment and the nights can get surprisingly chilly so pack for all seasons, even in the height of summer, with a rain jacket and warm jumper.

Is this trip for you?

This Moderate/Challenging week is for anyone looking to improve or maintain their fitness with a week of fun and carefully tailored fitness activities. You must already have a base level fitness (as a guide you should ideally be able to run a 5km distance under 35 minutes or go to the gym/cycle 2-3 times per week). Throughout the week you will be concentrating on strengthening and cardio with the objective of returning home feeling fitter and healthier. We also aim to work towards improving your 5km run time.

If you are unsure what your time is or would like to work on your fitness, we would recommend joining your local parkrun. These are free, weekly timed runs that are open to everyone, and are safe and easy to take part in. Exodus are proud parkrun sponsors and if you quote your parkrun ID while booking a trip you will get a free official parkrun top to wear on your travels and at your local parkrun! For more information on parkrun and our partnership see: www.exodus.co.uk/parkrun

All activities are optional.

Although we have given a detailed itinerary please note that the running order of activities may be altered giving the leader the opportunity to ensure the best itinerary is offered and fits with local weather/events.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.

a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
