Cancellation Policy for Family Emergency

Hello, wanted to get some feedback from other travellers regarding Exodus' cancellation policy.  Here is my situation.  I paid in full for my trip on Oct 3rd (it was not due until Oct 5th, but did it just in case) and was planning to set up my insurance the following week.  On Oct 4th, my father had a serious stroke and lives across the country.  I will not be able to make the trip in December, and Exodus will not give a partial refund or let me apply part of the funds toward a future trip.  I clearly understand the policy, and know this is out of policy since I did not purchase trip insurance immediately upon booking.  Would like to know other's thoughts on this.  Do you think this is too bad, tough luck your $1300USD is down the drain?
