Cuba cycling

I would like to see if anyone else out there is on this one or has done it

Hi everybody. I am not a keen cyclist and therefore have to get a bit of kit together for this tour to Cuba. Do I need to buy a proper pair of cycling shoes or can i use a pair of stiff soled shoes?

I did this trip in March 2011. It was my first cycle trip and I had a fantastic time. I highly recommend it.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to stay in touch using with the UK using a mobile in Cuba. I have just looked at EE roaming charges and at £2.50/min they are painful!

If you are not a seasoned cyclist, my tip is to wear a second pair of padded shorts for the first couple of days!
As far as I remember, the roads used are good quality tarmac - there is only one short stretch of unpaved rough track.
I prefer to use a cycling-specific pair of Shimano sandals in hot climates ( India, Borneo, central America and also this trip) - that way it doesn't matter how wet they get - and you can also run into any rivers or the sea to cool off withot fear of cutting your feet!
