  • Day 1

    Depart London.

  • Day 2

Arrive Male; board our boat, M/V Keana; cruise through North Male Atoll.

Following the arrival of the group flights, we transferto a hotel for the initial briefing before transferring by dhoni from the airport to board the M/V Keana, our home for the next 6 days, arriving in time for a light lunch. Today we cruise north to anchor close to Eriyadu Resort in North Male Atoll. During this time you are able to do as you please, relax on the sundeck, sit in the shade of the sun canopy and watch the beauty of the Maldives pass you by and maybe catch sight of dolphins. Our crew will try to find an opportunity for you to have your first snorkelling excursion this afternoon. The islands of the Maldives are beautiful, but what lies under the water is a veritable wonder of nature. The reefs that encircle the islands and the Atolls are just as abundant in their variety of coral as the marine creatures that live in and around them. This coupled with the amazingly clear water, make snorkeling and diving in the Maldives a unique experience that you will neverforget.

    Meals included: Lunch Dinner
  • Day 3

Cross into Baa Atoll with both morning and afternoon snorkelling excursions. Late afternoon visit to local island of Eydhafushi.

This morning we cross the channel to reach Baa Atoll. Baa Atoll has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful and unspoiled parts of the Maldives island chain. The lush vegetation and white powder-sand beaches lapped by turquoise-blue waters provide the back drop to the next few days on board M/V Keana.

Baa Atoll also encompasses many of the best snorkeling sites in the Maldives. We take advantage of this with an afternoon snorkeling safari, to see an incredible variety of fish found in the area, including Box fish, Porcupine fish and schools of Banner fish.

End the day at Eydhafushi, the capital local island of the atoll. Accompanied by a guide, time is spent exploring the island with the opportunity to meet the local people, learn about the local way of life and taste traditional Maldivian afternoon tea known as ‘hedikaa’.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 4

Morning and afternoon snorkelling excursions in Baa Atoll; evening presentation by Biosphere Reserve team.

We stay anchored in Baa Atoll and travel by dhoni to our chosen snorkeling sites. Whilst snorkeling we may be lucky to encounter a Manta ray ‘fly by’ (jumping out of the water). Green sea turtles and Hawksbill turtles are also common in the surrounding waters and lay their eggs on the atolls beaches.

This evening we are joined on board by a member of the Biosphere Reserve team whom work in conjunction with The Manta Trust, a UK registered charity to protect and maintain Hanifaru Bay. They will outline not only the work being carried out in Hanifaru Bay but also provide knowledge on what is known about the Manta ray migration to this area.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 5

Full day Manta ray safari in Hanifaru Bay.

Today we go in search of Manta rays. Hanifaru Bay in this part of the island chain is known worldwide for its large population of Manta rays. The Mantas are attracted by the abundance of plankton in this area and in the right conditions groups of more than 100 Mantas may gather to feed, flipping and turning with their giant wings in a frenzy of activity. The plankton also attracts Whale sharks to these waters and we may be lucky enough to encounter one of these gentle giants whilst snorkelling.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 6

Cruise south to Goidhoo Atoll with afternoon snorkelling excursion.

This morning we cruise south to the beautiful small atoll of Goidhoo. Although officially part of Baa Atoll in terms of administration, Goidhoo forms an atoll in its own right made up of numerous inhabited and uninhabited islands and sandbanks. The reefs here abound in a large variety of fish and encounters with small sharks, turtles and dolphins are possible during today’s snorkeling safari. This evening we gain a taste the real Maldives with a cultural dinner and traditional Bodu Beru drums and dancing.

    Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
  • Day 7

Cruise back to Male; farewell dinner.

Today we continue south before anchoring in the lagoon off the island of Hulhumale in the late afternoon. This morning there will be a final chance to snorkel these tropical waters and whilst cruising we can do as we please: relax on the sundeck, sit in the shade of the sun canopy, read a book or just watch the beauty of the Maldives pass by. Once anchored in Hulhumale lagoon there will be an optional Male city walking tour available for those who perhaps would like to stretch their legs! This evening, we are joined on board by a member of the NGO group Save the Beach who provide an overview of the Maldives marine environment.

  • Day 8

Please note that there is absolutely no alcohol allowed on the local islands – it is only permitted in the resorts and on the boats.

The Maldives has a tropical climate, plenty of sunshine and temperatures around 30°C throughout the year. Maldives has two distinct seasons; dry season (northeast monsoon) and wet season (southwest monsoon), with the former extending from January to March and the latter from mid-May to November. There can be heavy rain showers pretty much any time of year, but they tend to be short and cannot be accurately predicted seasonally.

Is this trip for you?

This is predominantly a marine adventure. You should be comfortable in the water in order to participate in the ocean excursions, but no certifications such as SCUBA are necessary.

The climate in the Maldives is tropical which means it can get very hot and humid and you should be prepared for this.

This holiday is operated at a time of changeable weather in the Maldives. These monsoonal conditions are exactly what create the plankton upon which the mantas gather to feed!

It is always possible that we may encounter the occasional day of rough seas and therefore an ability to swim is highly recommended.

Please note that the itinerary listed is a guideline and may be changed based on sightings in order to maximize the wildlife viewing experience.

An overview of flight options

Exodus is committed to making joining our tours as easy as possible, wherever you live. We generally only block book seats from London, but this certainly does not mean that you need to fly from there. Depending on the route and airlines available, there will usually be various options available for those who want to fly from their local airport.

This page aims to provide a useful overview of the options available to our clients. However, the best flight arrangements should be tailored to your personal requirements, so please contact our Sales team for expert advice.

What kind of options do I have ?

1. We can book for you: Flights from anywhere in the world - not via London

Depending on the route, this may be direct or via an overseas hub like Amsterdam, the Middle East or elsewhere. On short haul routes there may be direct flights with low cost airlines, charter flights or scheduled airlines. Exodus can book most, but not all, of these for you. The most appropriate airline may be different to that which we use for the group flight from London, but many people now travel on different airlines and meet up with their fellow passengers at the destination.

Pros Cons
  • May be the most direct route
  • Often the extra fare compared to the London flight is minimal.
  • As you will be in the hands a single airline for your entire journey, the airline will be responsible for your bags and your connections.
  • You may not be able to join the group transfers. However, we can usually arrange private transfers, or book your flights to try and coincide with the group transfers. See notes on transfer arrangements below.

2. We can book for you: Connecting flights from your local airport to London

Exodus can book connecting flights to London so you can join the group flight there. Connecting times will be followed according to airline advice, or as requested by clients. There are two types of fares we can use for this option: a 'through-fare' or a 'published fare'.
a) A 'through-fare' is where you will be in the main airline's care throughout. You change planes, but your bags are checked all the way through to your final destination.

b) A 'published fare' ticket is completely seperate from your onward ticket from London. It is usually cheaper than a through-fare but will need to be paid for and issued as soon as it is booked. This can be a problem if your tour has not yet reached minimum numbers. On 'published fares' neither airline is aware that you have connecting flights, so Exodus is responsible for timing your connection, not the airlines involved. The tickets are also usually non changeable and non refundable.

Pros Cons
  • Depending on the fare type, Exodus or the airline is responsible for flight connections.
  • Through fare tickets can be expensive.
  • On a published fare, tickets must be issued immediately; tickets on published fares can be very difficult to change if onward flight times change; bags are not checked though to your final destination.
  • Published fares are non-refundable.

3. Booking some or all of the flights yourself

You can also book connecting air travel yourself, either to London, or all the way to the start point. There may be certain airlines or routes we don't have access to, so this is always an option. However, if you make your own travel arrangements you become liable for any delays, cancellations or missed connections, and Exodus is not required to offer refunds if you have trouble reaching the start of your trip.

Pros Cons
  • You might find cheaper fares, or routes not available to Exodus.
  • You are responsible for any delays or missed connections, and the cost of the tour is not protected should you miss your flight be cancelled.

 Notes on transfer arrangements

Sometimes it is possible to travel on a different airline to the group flight from London. Where this is the case, we need to think about ensuring you meet up with the group with minimum extra cost and hassle.

  • On certain trips, it is easy to arrive on a different flight and still meet the group at the hotel with time in hand. We can usually arrange private transfers (at extra cost) or offer advice on taking a taxi to the start hotel.
  • On other trips (especially in Europe), the transfer meets the group flight and then travels some distance to the first night's accommodation. Where this is the case, our Sales team will try to arrange flights that arrive before (and depart after) the group. However, we do have to make it clear in your final documentation that if your flights are delayed, the transfer cannot wait for you. While Exodus or our local operators will do what we can to help you reach the start point of the tour, any additional costs must be paid by the client.
