Ancient & Modern Japan

Stunning trip. Taka, our guide, was just superb, and really helped make the trip as incredible as it was. Loved visiting all the different places, and using public transport

Most Inspirational Moment

Taka, our guide! Matsumoto Hiroshima

Thoughts on Group Leader

She was just superb. Super calm in EVERY situation, but absolutely effective. Great sense of humour. Very clear and controlled. Managed people missing ferries and buses with grace and calm and her communication was brilliant in each of these scenarios. She looked after all of us in every circumstance. For me, she was a big part of why the trip was so brilliant.

Trek Darjeeling, Sikkim & The Singalila Ridge

This is our third trip with Exodus and as before it was well organised.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the highest mountain on earth.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rajeev was a fantastic leader. He helped to reorganize the trip when the weather has unseasonal heavy rain. In fact we preferred how the trek went ahead as opposed to the original itinerary. It was a brilliant trip and Rajeev is fantastic.

Spectacular

What an excellent trip! The hikes varied in terrain and vistas, from coastal walks to levadas to mystical forests to mountain tops, but all were spectacular and each day was as good as or better than the one before. Paulo was a wonderful guide, knowledgeable about the island, its history, culture, flora and fauna. We were fortunate to have very good weather, and even more fortunate to have a group that gelled beautifully. Not only did everyone get along well, but everyone was fit and hiked at a similar pace. (We understand from other reviews that that’s not always the case.) First hotel in Machico was pretty dated, but good location and breakfast. The hotel at Porto Moniz was the best of the trip, modern, well-equipped, great food – and right across the road from volcanic pools. Very scenic. The hotel in Funchal was fine and in a great location.

Most Inspirational Moment

How to choose? The first two walks which featured incredible sea views were hard to beat, but the sunrise from the peak of Pico Areiero may have topped them. Quite magical.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paulo was terrific. He did a great job briefing us at the outset, and before the next day's hike, making sure that we had realistic expectations. He set up a WhatsApp group to share information and photos, and provided us with restaurant recommendations for the nights when we weren't eating at the hotel. He shared interesting information throughout each hike, and made sure that everyone was doing well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring hiking poles, and be prepared for the challenges of the trip. Exodus does a good job of describing what the hikes involve; pay attention so that you make sure you're choosing the right trip for you. So long as you're relatively fit, you'll love this. Also, I was surprised that some reviewers complained about having to buy lunches from local supermarkets for their hikes. Really, that was no problem at all. We stopped at a local supermarket each morning as we set out - sometimes there were prepared sandwiches that you could purchase, sometimes not - but it was easy to pick up some fruit, power bars, trail mix and cheese that was perfect for hiking (you could get sliced meats and buns, too, if you wanted). Final tip: on your free day in Funchal, be sure to take the cable car to the top and tour the beautiful Tropical Gardens, then take the "toboggan" (wicker sleigh) ride down - it's unique to Madeira and good fun.

It was a good title.

Had the most amazing time. Mohamed showed us a lot of fascinating places and explained the Moroccan way of life. He was an excellent tour guide. Some people had problems with their accommodations. Mohammed got these issues dealt with quickly and efficiently. Mohamed was enthusiastic, energetic, positive and very helpful. He explained everything very well. Kind, considerate, responsible! He is an excellent tour guide. We enjoyed the diversity of the country. Each day was another new and exciting adventure. We learned a lot. The riads were a true Moroccan experience and the hotels were also very nice. The Moroccans were polite, respectful, helpful and very friendly. We are truly are grateful to have had this experience in Beautiful Morocco. We enjoyed the small group experience and met nice people on our tour.

Most Inspirational Moment

It was all amazing. A fantastic tour! We got to see so many parts of the country. Very unique and diversified. Dromedaries, Desert, Hamman, Atlas Mountains, Seeing Villages, Listening to local Musicians, Madenas!! Food was incredible! Hearing the call to prayer was a unique experience. Perfect itinerary. We also did a balloon ride on our free day. It was beyond anything we could have imagined.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was beyond EXCELLENT! AMAZING!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring something for diarrhea as many of the group had problems with this issue.

Great mix of activity, culture, and information

This was our first Exodus trip. We loved the group size (11) and its compatibility, mix of activities, and the incredible knowledge of the tour leader, Michael/Miguel. On most days we were out and about from 9 to 5. The terrain was lovely – hills and mountains surrounding rolling pastureland and olive farms. We saw and walked through so many white villages, and some of us took an extra 4 hour trip to Ronda, one of the most famous. The hiking was moderate. For me, the oldest by several years at age 75, it was at times tough because of the many ups and downs with the inclines occasionally too steep and long. The other 10 handled it with less trouble. Our tour leader, Michael/Miguel, knew everything about farming, geology, plants and animals and birds, and the history of the area. We all marveled at the extent of his knowledge! The farmhouse we stayed in was lovely with good food (the paella the last night was the best!), though the rooms lacked good lighting and the beds seemed a bit soft. This is a fun trip to go on for the activity, lovely scenery, and variety. We combined it with 2 days in Malaga and 4 in Granada and found every day rich and magical.

Most Inspirational Moment

The hike in El Chorro gorge on the Caminito del Rey and walking through El Real Alcazaba, the royal palace, in Seville (tickets many in our group bought on their own for our day in Seville.)

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was excellent -- well organized and incredibly knowledgeable about everything -- plants, farming, geology, birds, animals, and human history.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You definitely need to be fit to do this trip. Be prepared for some challenging uphill stretches, fortunately not continuous. Since Exodus ranks hikes 1 through 7 not 1 through 5 I'd say that there are some parts of the hikes that are 3's not just 2's.

India Tiger Safari

Tour was well organised and our tour leader Vijay was excellent

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a tiger in the wild was amazing, and we had 3 excellent sightings - saw 9 in total. The elephant sanctuary was also great - we all really enjoyed it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vijay was a great leader. He was enthusiastic about everything & very knowledgeable about the tigers and birds. Very friendly & very organised. Always tried to ensure everyone was ok.

Wonderful holiday

What an amazingly beautiful country Jordan is. I would encourage anyone to visit. The tour took in a wide range of activities- history and religion, beautiful vistas and walks, local experience such as a hammam and meal with family (many were concerned this may feel exploitive but in truth you dinned as you would in a restaurant and was a nice alternative) . The drive round the desert was breathtaking, and sitting by a camp fire as the skies darkened in Wadi Rum memorable. The tour was not unduly fast paced allowing for down time – which for me is essential as a break from work. Jordan felt safe and welcoming – sadly empty because of conflict that doesn’t really touch Jordan (for tourists ) despite its proximity – so both wonderful to have places like Petra to oneself (almost) but heartbreaking to see the impact on a country and it’s people.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole trip was one inspiring moment after the other, so hard to have a highlight. A varied well paced tour with lots of different activities - but optional extras could be declined if so wished by any traveller, allowing you to tailor your trip to your preferences.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Amer , couldn't have been better. His passion and love for his country shone through as he shared his stories and history about all of the sites we visited. He integrated into the group so well, putting a bunch of strangers at their ease and facilitating the group's cohesion. I particularly liked that he would share his knowledge and insight of a place and then allow us to explore in our own time - so you could do something at your pace and choice without feeling you were on a school outing. He encouraged us to remember our fellow travelers and that each of us would want different things and go at different paces. I cannot recommend him more highly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would encourage a visitor to arrive a day early to enjoy wandering round the markets in Amman (hotel well placed in downtown for this). If you are debating whether to go or not - do book - you won't regret it! Don't pack binoculars - they will hold up your luggage, may be confiscated or held by hotel whist you stay. More hassle then its worth

India Tiger Safari

Very well organised. Great locations, food and very knowledgeable and helpful guide. The weather was perfect and everything went according to plan.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the tiger in all the parks. Sometimes it was only a glimpse of one. Learning about the jungle and being in it was quite an experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very helpful. Always available. Very patient and polite.

A fascinating and enlivening adventure

In a couple of action packed weeks we were able to experience the extraordinary variety of the Vietnamese landscape and culture, including beautiful coastal and mountain vistas, lively cities, colourful and inspiring temples, historic sites, engaging cultural events and wonderful food.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sailing for a day and a night through the breathtaking vistas of Ha Long Bay in a luxurious boat exclusive to our group, like a private yacht!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Huy Nguyen was a knowledgeable, engaging and highly efficient guide and organiser, who brought the places we visited to life, but on top of that he added a very special personal touch, in that he was alert to the needs of every individual in the group and went out of his way to respond positively to the specific requirements of individuals and to reassure individuals who were worried.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for very hot weather and (when we were there in November): very heavy rain

Highlights of Ancient Greece

The expedition was simply wonderful and passed all expectations. The Guide was so knowledgeable – dates and places and people at her finger tips and such a lovely person. She also told us much about Greece and Greek society. She organised everything so well. I had long wanted to see these sites and learned far more than I expected to and extended my thinking on how we all live as a human race. Food was usually fresh and interesting and hotels fine everywhere

Most Inspirational Moment

Nestor's Palace near Pylos found in the Odyssey and I think Epidaurus.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Stefania was a wonderful guide - she knew so much "off the top of her head". Always interesting with history so well conveyed. Very lucky to have her on our trip
