WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

Great scenery interwoven with fascinating history, excellent leader and lovely hotel base for the week.

Most Inspirational Moment

The scenery is just breathtaking, but if I had to choose a moment it was probably the walk around and into the crater on Vesuvius.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine did pretty much all she could to make sure the group had a good week. Very friendly and open, Christine has made very good local connections which help in making things run smoothly. Christine uses her knowledge of the area and its people to enrich the walks. Excellent job!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Many people would probably find walking poles useful, whether for going up or down (or both), particularly the longer flights of steps.

MARRAKECH & THE SAHARA

Morocco was my first Exodus experience, and if this trip was anything to go on, it won’t be my last. It is a truly beautiful country, and one that can be more fully exploited by this trip, taking in the variety of everything the desert, mountains and city has to offer…

Most Inspirational Moment

Sitting on top of a Saharan sand dune watching the sun set and the stars come out will be a moment difficult to top for any future trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abdullah, our group leader, was simply sensational. Always watching out for the group, but never in an oppressive school-master way, his sense of humour and enormous passion for his country and his job really made the trip special.

Advice for Potential Travellers

With long waits at airports on both the outward and return journey, make sure you're prepared. Though I didn't myself, some fellow travellers managed to find a few Moroccan dirham available in the UK which came in enormously handy when getting to Casablanca and realising that the departure lounge has no way of obtaining money, and only one solitary café for entertainment. Similarly, the airport lounge in the outbound flight remains something of a mystery for me, with nowhere to change dirham back (and some shops not even accepting anything other than Euros) despite being a closed currency.

CYCLING IN GREECE

A great holiday combining visits to historical sites I’ve always wanted to visit along with cycle touring and great food. All of the hotels except the one in Athens gave an opportunity for a swim after cycling in either the hotel pool or the sea (in one case, both). We were extremely well looked after while cycling by both Christiana and Christos who kept us supplied with ice cold water at every cycle stop along with either snacks or fruit.  Some of the scenery on our tour was spectacular with Mycenae and the road approaching Tolos being particular favourites of mine.  The memory of some of the delicious meals we ate will stay with me for a long time.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the historical sites and museums

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, both Christiana and Christos looked after us extremely well throught the holiday

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you take your swimming costume

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

A great taster for what Mont Blanc has to offer!   This trip has definately put the Tour of Mont Blanc way up on my "to do" list as a result!

Most Inspirational Moment

Encircled by mountains and blue sky.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon did an excellent job finding alternative routes as our end of May departure (first of season) was thwarted by too much snow on the routes meaning we were unable to do much of the stated itinerary.  But its a credit to Simon that we still managed to get out every day, enjoy challenging walks, beautiful views and overally a great experience of the Mont Blanc region.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes are spot on - you need to take the full range of gear and you will wear it (especially for the first departure) - waterproofs, gloves, woolly hats, sun hats & sunglasses all in one day!

CHIANTI: WALKING & WINE

This was our first walking holiday and we will definitely do it again, we loved it.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip to Sienna was a fabulous day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nothing was too much trouble, he interacted wonderfully with the whole group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is what it says it is, follow the guidance notes before you go and you will have a fabulous time.

PERU EXPLORER

This 3 week trip is sensational from start to finish especially if Wilbert Ramos is your guide.  Desert, the Andes and Inca Trail, Lake Titicaca and Amazon rainforest, the Peruvian people, many ecosystems in which the flora and fauna vary considerably, tremendous food even on trek…what’s not to love….including the fabulous group of people who were Wilbert’s "family" as we travelled.

Most Inspirational Moment

It's virtually impossible to select one particular moment - there are so many...Lake Titicaca's Uros Islands and people who welcomed us into their homes with open arms; Islas Ballestas for the birdlife; the changing scenery from the coast and desert up into the Andes and then into the Amazon basin; learning the difference between vicuna, alpaca, llama and guanaco; Cusco; the beautiful knitwear and jewellery - I defy anyone to resist temptation!, and the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.  All the Inca sites we visited were fascinating, and our guide was able to tell us so much about this period in Peru's history. For me all of these are the defining moments but especially the Inca Trail - reaching the top of Dead Woman's Pass, walking through the most beautiful forests on both the Pacific and Amazon watersheds, almost running up that last flight of Inca Steps to the  Sun Temple and seeing Machu Picchu and Huanya Picchu below.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wilbert Ramos is an experienced, mature guide to whom you warm instantly. He clearly loves his country and is passioante about what he does, wanting so much for you to enjoy every possible experience/aspect of your trip.  There aren't enough superlatives to describe Wilbert - he's an equal first in quality of guide I've met in many years of travelling. He's caring of his clients and staff driving buses, other guides, staff in hotels and when trekking, knowledgable, goes to extremes to help, nothing is too much trouble and he's tremendous fun to be with.  Marks out of 10?  20 at least.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want to travel in the southern half of Peru then this trip is a superb way in which to see the diversity of the  country, meet the people, try out different areas food and to trek - but you don't have to trek, you can spend more time in Cusco. If you want to trek the Inca Trail AND visit the other areas included in this trip then you do need to book early so Exodus can get your permit.  Go for it, it's worth every penny.

NATIONAL PARKS OF THE WEST

This was an absolutely amazing holiday that met and exceeded my expectations! We went from one breathtaking moment to another everywhere we went.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walk through The Narrows at Zion was glorious - you do need waterproof shoes/sandals for this as there are large and slippery rocks to negotiate, we didn't need a wetsuit but we did have our swimwear on just in case it got particularly deep. I also loved the Monument Valley jeep tour with the Navajo (stay for dinner and you'll drive back under the stars) and Bryce Canyon and its Hoodoos were 'awesome'.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex was fantastic! He took very good care of us all and was extremely well organised and knowledgeable. Often the group split up to do different walks or activities and he always made sure that could be accommodated. He was endlessly patient, despite our constant stream of questions about everything from the colour of American cheese to gun legislation, and he did his upmost to ensure that everyone was having a great time.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely take waterproof sandals/shoes so that you can do the Narrows walk. Take a good camera (plus charger) as there is so much you will want to take photos of. Unless you can read on a bus, don't bother taking a book as you won't have time to read during the day and you will be far too tired to read at the end of it!

PERU EXPLORER

This was a trip that made you feel you had experienced Peru not just had a holiday, this was due to the variety of the places visited and the excellent guides.  The trip was non stop and you need to be prepared for the fact that you have early starts and a lot of travelling and not a lot of down time but how else could you see so much in three weeks? I would do it again tomorrow.

Most Inspirational Moment

Machu Picchu obviously is what most people and myself went to Peru for and it did not disappoint, the achievement you feel when you trek, reach the Sun Gate and look down towards Machu Picchu cannot be described but also the Peruvian people who made us feel so welcome and their smiles were contagious, it is such a colourful country beautiful.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wilbert looked after us all and made sure that we were getting what we expected from the trip and more, he shared his wealth of knowledge, his love for his country, people and beliefs and he was very careing and considerate. We all felt so sad to say goodbye to "Papa Wilbert" as we called him and he will forever be thought of with affection by us all I am sure.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travellers Cheques are difficult to change and I would not take them if I return, also when you change US dollars to Sol ask for small notes at the bank as these are needed and large notes cannot always be changed outside of the cities. We flew from Heathrow to Madrid so to have a few Euros to get a drink or snack if needed is a good idea. Toilet roll is a must as not all toilets have paper and plenty of wet wipes or hand sanitiser. Make plenty of notes on the little things the guides tell you about or things you do, you can read up on other things in the guide book but as you see and hear so much you may forget things, notes can be read when you get home and relax to help you remember the little things that made the trip extra special. An extra day in Lima at the end would have been a good option as we travelled straight from the rainforest which meant you had an extra flight and travelling time on an already long journey also a nice hot shower before travelling would have been good.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

I have just come back from my trip in the Atlas mountains and it has been a really extraordinary experience. Not only were the landscapes stunning throughout our journey but the view at the top of Toubkal was amazing! The simple and happy life of the Berber people is truly inspirational and I hope to carry that forward with me in my day-to-day life.

Most Inspirational Moment

I have loved every minute of the trip but definitely Summit Day was the most inspirational moment for me! A great personal challenge, both mental and physical and what an achievement to be at the top! What I have also truly enjoyed was being disconnected from everything and going back to what really matters. Like the Berbers would say, only two things are important: good health and happiness!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Lahcen was funny, kind, open-minded and very helpful. Always happy to answer any questions we had and share the fascinating life and culture of the Berbers.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare for both warm and cold weather. Although for us, Summit Day was rather warm, it can be very windy at times. Make sure you have the required level of fitness and can follow the pace set by the group leader (which is honestly perfect), especially on Summit Day, so as to not penalise the whole group. If you are interested in helping out local communities, please bring pencils or books for the kids. As we walked through the mountain villages and met with children there, I wish I had pens with me to give to them!

CYCLING IN GREECE

The tour is very well organized and operated by knowledgeable guides who were able to tell us about Greek history as well as showing us the pertinent sights along our route.  The bicycles which were provided were in very good shape and the guides maintained them well during our travels.      The accommodations were excellent with hospitable hosts in each place.  While the meals were not included in the tour, the guides were very responsive to the group in chosing restaurants each day which enabled us to taste the delicacies of the particular region.   I particularly appreciated the sensitivity of our guides to the environment.

Most Inspirational Moment

I really appreciated visiting the large amphitheatre at Epidaurus, which gave me a strong sense of Greece being the cradle of western civilization.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christiana was superb, not only in her organization and knowledge but in providing a very personal touch in leading the tour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be sure to allow a few days in Athens before or after the tour.  Also, be prepared for hot weather even in May!
