WALKING THE PICOS DE EUROPA

A superb walking holiday, with great daily walks – and a brilliant guide!

Most Inspirational Moment

It's difficult to say one inspirational moment.  I think it was all of the walks, each dealing with varied terrain - but, always led by Alvaro, a guide that couldn't be better.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Superb!  Alvaro really loves the Picos de Europa; he knows a lot about the area and was always happy to share his excellent knowledge of local flora and fauna.  Also, he had a very good sense of humour so there were a lot of laughs!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Going in late March can result in inclement weather.  It was forecast to be wet all week, on and off.  However, we did have 4 excellent, mainly dry (and quite warm) walking days.  Our 'day off' in Llanes was very wet - and our last walking day - lots of snow!  Potential travellers should be aware that walks are not always as advertised; they have to change due to weather, particularly early or late in the season.  The optional activities for the day off may change, too, according to the weather - for example, our only (and preferred) option was a day trip to Llanes on the coast.  If you are likely to get travel sick, avoid the back row of the minibus - the winding mountain roads are likely to bring on nausea if you are susceptible.

A TASTE OF CUBA

A really fantastic trip in so many ways. Although only a week we packed so much into it that it felt like longer! It truly provided a great taste of Cuba.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day there were inspirational moments - the beautiful Vinales valley, swimming in the Bay of Pigs, the stunning architecture in Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Havana, our guide reading a letter from Che to Fidel as we drove to Santa Clara to visit Che's mausoleum - just to mention a few. And of course the dancing (which we participated in!) and music everywhere we went!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide, Tony, was also inspirational. The perfect combination of professionalism and great fun. He was always willing to organize any extras for us and shared so much knowledge about his wonderful country. Our driver, Alex, also deserves a mention. Not only was his driving excellent but also his salsa dancing!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Change more money at the airport than you think you'll need. I certainly managed to spend a lot. Perhaps it was all the mojitos!

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

After the cold UK weather an ideal break at this time of year, warm and mostly sunny, a mix of pleasant walks, fine food, a touch of sightseeing and not too crowded this early in the season.

Most Inspirational Moment

The stunning walk from Fira to Oia on Santorini, dazzling ever changing views of the caldera, finishing with the while marble streets of Oia.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Well organised, knowledgeable, easy going, delightfull company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Certainly this year in early April a light jacket for the evenings was useful.

CYCLE MOROCCO'S GREAT SOUTH

A great trip taking in some fantastic and ever changing scenery along largely very quiet roads. Not only do you get to experience the hustle and bustle of Marrakech’s bazaars but you get to cycle the through towns and villages that few tourists ever see. A great leader and a great group. A great leader

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for it!

VIETNAM ADVENTURE

This was an amazing introduction to the variety that is Vietnam – every day had its special memories so it is impossible to identify a single highlight.  The guide, Chinh, was brilliant and his passion for his own country was contagious.  The peoples of Vietnam must surely be the most charming, friendly, smiling and laughter-filled peoples in the world!

Most Inspirational Moment

As is obvious from the above, picking out one individual memory above all others is impossible.  Should it be the Marble Mountain Pagoda?  The homestay and preparing (or at least attempting to be of some help with our efforts) the evening meal, the war museum in HCM City, or the ready laughter and good humour of the Hanoi shop keeper as my wife attempted to haggle a bargain price?  Or the Cu Chi Tunnels, Halong Bay, the overnight train from Hanoi to Hue, the ...?  I can't choose.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Absolutely excellent in every regard.  He was instrumental in creating this memorable holiday and a large factor in so many of the warm memories we carry from it.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light.  Buy any extra clothing you need when in the country.  You'll be glad you left room in the case for your purchases.  And don't be put off by accounts of the traffic and road-crossing experience.  It's actually quite exhilerating.

AMALFI COAST: POMPEII & PIZZA - FAMILY HOLIDAY

Very relaxing family trip

Most Inspirational Moment

Enjoyed Pompeii and the beautiful villages on the Amalfi coast. The walk of the Gods was fantastic too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travel sickness pills/bands for boats and windy roads.

WALKING THE FRENCH RIVIERA

Beautiful villages to explore with spectacular views and a hotel right on the beach – what more could you ask for?!

Most Inspirational Moment

Realising our hotel was overlooking the sea. It was wonderful to be able to walk from the hotel and stroll along the promenade whenever I wanted. It was also fantastic to finally see the sun!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Stephanie is a superb leader, extremely knowledgeable and experienced, we all felt very lucky to have her as our guide. Her English is brilliant but she is very happy to chat in French for those who wish to practise their language skills.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is lots to see and do in Menton, several of our group visited the Jean Cocteau museum and reported back that it was great. There is also a fantastic food market and limoncello shop so leave room in your case if you want to take some treats home.

WALKING IN MADEIRA

Fantastic holiday – we did 5 walks that were all between 8-16km (with one day off in beautiful Funchal), and these are, IMO correctly graded as "Moderate". They which were challenging enough so you’d feel sufficiently tired and like you’ve accomplished something by the end of the day, but not too hard, so you don’t need to be an experienced mountain climber to cope.  Our group got along really well, and the weather was perfect for walking – sunshine on most days, 20 degrees and a warm breeze. A success all round!

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching the sun come up at the top of the mountains. We were above the clouds - magical!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide was superb – a local who had grown up on the island, and who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about its beautiful landscape, nature and culture. Everything was extremely well organised, our guide looked very well after us (both in terms of safety and general advice on where to eat, shop etc.). Friendly, funny and very patient. A real credit to Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

April/May seems a good time to visit - not too hot for walking and lots of flowers and plants in bloom. Madeira is still a bit of an unknown in tourism, so not too overrun. Do bring a swimsuit even in April - even though it was only 19 degrees, the humidity meant that it felt warm enough to go for a swim!

WALKING THE FRENCH RIVIERA

I would certainly  recommend this walking holiday, it proved very interesting. The location is marvellous  with the hotel front overlooking the sea and the  hills behind encompassing these wonderfull walks with such splendid views.

Most Inspirational Moment

The lunch spot on  the last walk, friday, sitting on the ridge in pine trees in the plesant sun with views  to the south down to Menton and north to the southern Alps  with their snowy tops.  A most beautifull location to be at.!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Could not be bettered ! Plesant, well informed, French.  Stephanie looked after us so well. The prepared pack of local information was comprehensive. On the one slight medical concern we had on a walk she acted very confidently...she is excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks are not for the weak willed, the ascents need grit, and this could be harder  as the summer progresses. I used a walking pole and was very glad I had taken it with me.

CLASSIC VIETNAM & ANGKOR

Excellent variety of things to see and do. Small congenial group.

Most Inspirational Moment

Overnight cruise in Halong Bay including  sea kayaking through a rock tunnel to an enclosed bay with wild monkeys.Exploring the Chi Chi tunnels - I knew about these of course, but experiencing them first hand and understanding the ingenuity and determination that  created them and kept them functioning was fascinating.Loved Hoi An - relaxing after the bustle of Hanoi.Angkor Wat for its scale, Bayon temple for its artistry and doing my Tomb Raider pose among those incredible tree roots at Ta Prohm.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dat was very personable and fitted in well with the group. He took us to some great places to eat that we might not have discovered for ourselves, especially the Night market BBQ in Ho Chi Minh City and the newly opened Little Menu restaurant in Hoi An. I'm sure a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make all the arrangements flow smoothly. In Angkor, we had less social time with our guide but he was very knowledgable and made a good selection of 4 temples each with something different to offer.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although guide books say you can get good coffee in Vietnam, I found it almost undrinkable. It was often like tar and the biggest problem was that I just couldn't find unsweetened milk. So if you like white coffee without sugar, suggest you take both coffee and some powdered milk (kettle in all hotels on this trip)Don't take too many clothes; you will be packing and unpacking a lot. Laundry services are easy to find, very cheap (outside the hotel) and quick. Loose silk or cotton pants or tops are very cheap and there are lots of T shirts, trainers, sandals etc if you need them + you will need space in your luggage to bring stuff back.Save your shopping for Hoi An; best quality, best variety and rather less hustle and bustle than Hanoi. If you are in the market for a handbag (or belt, wallet etc) Siem Reap has lots of crocodile, snake, ostrich and sting ray leather goods - not cheap but certainly cheaper than UK for this quality.
