CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: KVITAVATN

In my opinion Kvitavatn remains the best choice for those interested in varied and challenging skiing in an unspoilt location. Expert tuition and leading, excellent accommodation and food also make this a memorable experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Setting out in the morning across the frozen lake with the crisp snow sparkling in bright sunshine and the cloudless blue sky promising a most enjoyable day.IlseIls

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ilse was an inspiration . She has a vast local knowledge , keeps an understanding eye on all members of the group, encourages everyone to learn more ,and has a strong rapport with each skier In short she is a great teacher.

CUBAN HIGHLIGHTS RIDE

A very well organised cycle holiday, full of great experiences and meeting some like minded travellers. The place and people were fantastic and our Guide and Driver helped make the experience memorable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Just sitting on the pavement in Trinidad listening to some street musicians playing marvellous music - we were their main audience and as a result of our support and applause the crowds gathered! The way a group of people can gel almost immediately and create friendships that we all know will last long after the trip  The friendliness of the people and stress free approach to enjoying life.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose was really incredible. So passionate about his country but also very keen to make sure we had an amazing experience. He was flexible when necessary and managed to squeeze the most out of the opportunities for us to experience Cuba.Occasionally his briefings were a little long but his humour and enthusiasm were infectious.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We were advised via Trip Notes and friends that we had to watch for 3 things. To quote "The food will be bland, the hotels average and take your own toilet paper "Wrong! The food was excellent, varied and healthy (I have never felt fitter), the hotels were of a good standard and toilet facilities just fine .Advice? Make sure you take insect repellant - we did and were grateful .... and high factor suncream.More advice? Go there! One extra piece of information - make sure you are fit for cycling, train before you go - it was sometimes demanding in the heat and the last day's hill climb with 30 degree heat was quite tough!

Suggestions

I have not travelled with Exodus before (being used to the hard slog of Charity rides) so this was a perfect balance of holiday and cycling. The organisation and itinerary were great - there was really good attention to detail. The coach was air conditioned and our bikes were stored safely on board (the bikes and mechanics were first rate too) and our driver was careful and friendly. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely use Exodus again. Thanks for doing such a superb job

ANDES TO AMAZON

A thoroughly enjoyable tour that encompassed such varied landscapes and people, as Ecuador covers a relatively small area compared to many other South American countries. We travelled from the chilly high Andes to the heat of the jungle and Pacific coast. Our guide (Pablo) was excellent. Our driver (Nelson) was careful and made us feel secure. Distances each day were not too great and most roads were good. Our accommodation and food were also good throughout. A great way to learn about and see Ecuador.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many high points - from the high mountains and snow covered volcanoes, beautiful landscapes, varied agriculture, colourful markets, varied peoples in the local dress and the delightful old towns within Quito and Cuenca. The railway journey on the rebuilt track from Alausi to the Devil's Nose switch back was great fun for everyone (not just for railway fans).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pablo was a professional - knowlegable, helpful and considerate. Cosmopolitan in outlook with excellent English. He made situations work for the benefit of the whole group on many occasions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take varied clothing as it can be cold as well as hot. The 3 night stop on arrival at Pantavi Hacienda was good and helped overcome the effect of the long journey.

Suggestions

It would have been nice to stop at Leito Hacienda for a second night or to find a hotel nearer Alausi rather than stopping in Riobamba.

SPICE TRAILS OF KERALA

The trip was well organised, the group we were with mixed well and the group leader worked hard making the holiday a great success.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bali, what can you say, he made the holiday an experience and a pleasure, allowing us to appreciate the full wonders of India and at the same time learn about the more subtle parts of the religion, politics and every day life of Indians today and in the past.

PETRA & WADI RUM BY BIKE

I really enjoyed the cycling, in spite of the cold wind at times.  I had doubted whether I would keep up (as a 60+er) but was relieved not to be quite the slowest!  The cycling was somewhat stage-managed with a Police 4 WD with flashing lights leading us and stopping the traffic to allow us to pass, a cycling guide at the front of the party and another at the back and lastly the coach behind that, to say nothing of the cycle vehicle which raced up and down our column!  We were cheered on by children on the route as cyclists, especially western female ones, are very rare!  Cycling is obviously not a Jordanian pastime.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walk up to Place of High Sacrifice in Petra and down the other side towards Wadi Faresa - the colours in the rocks were fantastic.Chatting to a lovely Jordanian family on Aqaba public beach on a sunny morning - the little girls were so keen to practise their English.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very knowledgable about the ancient history of the area and of the recent history and life of the people.  He spoke very good clear English.  A very calm unflappable person who prepared some good lunches and marvellous snacks morning and afternoon.  Most of us went home a few pounds heavier despite all the exercise!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take both cold and warm weather gear.  The temperatures varied widely over the trip.  It was very warm in the Dead Sea area and Aqaba but cold in Petra and most of us were unprepared for this.  Gloves, scarves and warm trousers were needed at times, as well as woolly hats!  Don't expect wide availability of alcohlic drinks.  When available, wine and beer are quite expensive in most places apart from Aqaba.  We found the local wine, St George, to be very palatable.

Suggestions

The Jordanian Arabs are very welcoming.  Unlike some of their neighbours, they do not hassle or beg and are so friendly. If you enjoy a mixture of culture, history, fresh air and exercise then this is a holiday for you!

WALKING IN ANDALUCIA

An easy, relaxing week of walking in excellent company. Good food (and wine) served by friendly staff in lovely surroundings. Evenings and early mornings were very cold but the bedrooms were well heated and the water wonderfully hot. The sitting room fire could have been lit a little earlier to warm it up for the evening.

Most Inspirational Moment

The afternoon spent at the Real Alcazar, Seville - second only to the Al Hambra in Granada.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Laid back, helpful and good company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be warned the pool is FREEZING in February - but really exhilarating after a long walk.

Suggestions

This is a very easy week, with relatively short walks and quite a lot of time spent at the farmhouse where there is not a lot to do other than read, play cards etc. This is wonderful for a really chilled holiday but might not suit the more 'active'.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

This was a quite spectacularly well-conducted experience from beginning to end; I couldn’t be more delighted in our choice to go with Exodus and enjoy the exemplary service from their partners, the African Walking Company.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspiring moment of the trip was undoubtedly the incredible teamwork ethic and camaraderie running through the entire contingent of porters and assistants that made the trip up the mountain with us. while I wouldn't say that reaching the top of Kilimanjaro pushed me to my *absolute* limits (as I have a high level of fitness) I do believe that the process was rendered that much easier by the real 'togetherness' that our group enjoyed. The professionalism of the crew travelling with you could not be surpassed and I can imagine that for the naive, a trek like this could quite easily take on a more sinister veneer if not given the level of support that the AWC gave us.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader led by example from beginning to end; you could tell he was monitoring everyone's progress like a hawk despite displaying an unbelievable calmness on the outside which, in turn, kept everyone at ease. His nightly chats with the group were both entertaining, informative and full of hope and optimism which went a long way towards helping get us out of bed in the mornings!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is not an easy trip, do not get it twisted; I take huge heart in our decision to travel the Lemosho route (thus giving the longest time to acclimatise) sadly vindicated by the occasional sight of casualties carried down the mountain on the last couple of days. Having carefully taken our time from beginning to end, reaching the top was overwhelming; it was my first serious mountain-climbing achievement, and has already given me the enthusiasm to save up and do it all over again in another continent when time and money permit! I would also advise going ahead with all kit recommendations and not attempting to travel light in any respect; you won't need to carry most of this stuff anyway, and given conditions can be quite bleak towards the latter stages of the trek I wouldn't have wanted to be caught short without any essentials. Having brought the kitchen sink with us, this wasn't the issue but it was for some.

Suggestions

If you're in two minds, just do it. The staggeringly beautiful variation in terrain, group spirit when reaching the higher stages and views on the way down render this the perfect starter mountain for anyone looking for a manageable challenge.

VIETNAM ADVENTURE

Would not have been the same holiday without Thang, our guide. Nothing was too much trouble and he was diplomacy itself. An inspiration who presented his country magnificently.

Most Inspirational Moment

The history of the American war and how it gave a balanced view rather than the one sided view we got when it was in progress. The resilience of the Vietnamese people and how nice a race they are

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic, a little gem.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Dont take too many clothes.

Suggestions

Ref the above comment the availability of laundry services sourced by Thang meant it was easy to keep your dirty washing to a minimum. It would help if this was made clear in the trip notes.Would recommend Exodus to anybody, the organisation and attention to detail was unsurpassed.

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

I am still on a high 3 week afterwards – what an amazing holiday.  Everything was in the right balance, the slick organisation, the variety of activities, the freedom, the excitement, the quality equipment … just everything.

Most Inspirational Moment

My husband and me tunnelling into opposite ends of the quinsi and meeting in the middle both covered in snow but still grinning.  The Huskies on the dog sledding trip leaping up and down in their sheer enthusiasm.  Snow that stays glisteningly white and doesn’t fall off trees.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ollie was great.  Well organised, always willing to help and answer questions.  Always taking us into deep snow which is much more fun.

Advice for Potential Travellers

They really do provide you with enough gear apart from a neck scarf.  Don't be lulled by the cosy dining room, always take warm stuff with you in case there is a Northern Lights call because once you go out and look you daren't go back for warm clothing in case you miss them.  Careful not to slip on the ice when climbing out of the hot tub (it was my only injury of the week).  The hot chocolate isn't free.  You don't need much cash at all - you can put everything on a tab at the basecamp and pay by card at the end of the week.

Suggestions

I was initially concerned with the cost of the holiday but have no regrets now I'm back.  It was so refreshing, fun and exciting it was worth it.  I loved the fact there was so much trust.  After a morning of snow shoeing they just said keep the kit all week and go out whenever you fancy.  We used our free time exploring the area, tobogganing and kick sledding.  In the evenings it was nice to relax in the hot tub.  We took lots of games with us for the evening and enjoyed the drum making.

ANTARCTICA, FALKLANDS & SOUTH GEORGIA

A wonderful trip.  Once youy have seen Antarctica, you understand the importance of conserving and protecting it.  Be prepared to come back as an ambassador for the region!

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to say!  The first wonder was seeing an albatross fly past our cabin window when we opened the curtains in the morning.  Then there were the hundreds of thousands of penguins on South Georgia at St Andrews Bay, Shackeltons Grave at Grytviken, and the pod of Orcas that swam past the ship at one point.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kirsten was an experienced and conscientous leader.  Excellent briefing and debriefings.  A general feeling that she knew the area well, the flora and fauna, together with the inherent risks associated with any landings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to accept that conditions in the Southern Ocean completely determine what you can or cannot do by way of landings.  Choose a ship (like ours - The Ioffe) which can handle bad conditions and on which the movement of the ocean is less obvious than on lesser vessels. Be prepared to be amazed!

Suggestions

The Expedition Team were exceptional, the Crew wonderful, the food was very good and very plentiful. Expect to put on weight! It helped to have a superb, well captained, ship like the Akademik Ioffe, which was more stable than one would imagine, even in a Force 12, in the Drake Passage. You will take more pictures than you imagine, but do spend some time not looking through the viewfinder. The DVD at the end of the trip was great. It was nice not only to have a slide show, but also all of the peoples best picture choices. The maps and daily bulletins helped to write up journals and remind us of anything we had forgotten. If you can go to South Georgia, do so. The combination of scenery, history and wildlife makes South Georgia one of the  special places on this planet. It does help if you can get the very good weather we had.If you have any desire to go - then GO!
