EVEREST BASE CAMP

The trip totally met my expectations in terms of difficulty, quality of accommodation expertise of tour staff etc.. so the trip was definiteley what it said on the tin. Talking to people on the blog site is a really useful way to find stuff out as many people have done similar or even the same trips.

Most Inspirational Moment

Even though this trip was over christmas, I had no major expectations of having much of a christmas, especially given we were at 4,000m, the night time temperatures were about -10 C and the accommodation and food were limited accordingly. How wrong could I be. A superb group of people we enjoyed christmas decorations, a christmas tree, swapping xmas presents, music, drinks dancing and just fabulous fun. All repeated again in Lukla before our final flight to KTM. I had a fantastic time..

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader led the group extremely well.. He was extremely consultative and only pressed a specific point or course of action when it was supported by reasoned logic. Extremely non-confrontational he led almost as a friend rather than a leader which I think is great credit to his skills.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go in December / winter time be prepared for the cold. The hut communal areas only get warm once they light the stoves which may not be when you want it !. The rooms obviously have no heating and are extremely cold. The best tip is to make sure you have one or two aluminium sigg type drinks bottles which you can fill with hot water before you go to bed and use as hot water bottles. It helps enormously. You need a good quality sleeping bag (per the notes) and thermals..

OUr trip returned to the UK on the 30th December however I had arranged my own flights and returned on the evening of the 1st Jan. In essence I was able to enjoy New Year in Kathmandu. I can thoroughly reccomend it... It cost me £22 in the 'Yak and Yeti' for an evening of complimentary food and drink which extended into the early hours. Great music and disco, I would suggest not to be missed !

CYCLING CUBA

Just spent an amazing two weeks cycling in Cuba.  Sunshine, exercise, beautiful cities, countryside and beaches and the local people were really friendly.  I feel like I’ve seen it all, but still dieing to go back again.  The cycling was challenging, we had a really sociable group of differing ages, couples and singles and everyone got along really well.  Added to that the music, dancing and of course, the rum, it was most definitely one of my best holidays ever.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling into the Sierra Maestra mountain region and arriving in a little paradise with a natural rock pool and waterfall, having a massage and a delicious meal al fresco with a few Mojitos and Cuba Libres.  Inspiration to go on another Exodus holiday for sure.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was superb, nothing was too much trouble.  His local, political, social and historical knowledge really gave us an insight into how the Cuban people feel and live.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go with the flow.  The Cuban people don't have the luxury of constant water and electricity like we do, I showered by the light of my headtorch one morning!  It all adds to the Cuban experience.

Suggestions

I'd definitely recommend this holiday to anyone who enjoys cycling, meeting new people and really getting out into the heart of a country.  The Cuban people have very little, but they are still content and that's something that could teach us all an important lesson in the capitalist world of wealth and possessions.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

Probably the holiday of a lifetime, never again though!!  It was an amazing experience: great people, great food, great scenery and a bit of walking.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the crater at Gilman's point, I almost cried.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The head guide (Simon) and the assistant guides were all really friendly.  When we got up higher they were always making sure we were ok, willing to walk slower if you liked.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Summit day (going from 4,700m to 5,900m) is hard, probably the hardest thing I've ever done and the thing I'll measure all future endeavours against!  I'd say I'm very fit and I struggled once we got above 5,000m; I wasn't sure whether I was going to pass out or puke (thankfully I did neither).  Other people who were fit struggled, but then some people who'd done no training made it ok, so as lots of articles I read before the climb said, fitness is no protection against altitude sickness.  I didn't use diamox, some people did; there seemed to be no correlation between taking it and not feeling awful.

Suggestions

When you start the climb on day 1 you could be anywhere given you're in Forest.  From day 2 you know you are somewhere completely different. The food was really good and you wouldn't believe how much can be carried up a mountain.  We certainly did not go hungry.Nights are cold so make sure you have a good sleeping bag.  Woke up on day 3 and water outside the tent had frozen, woke up on day 4 and the bottle next to my pillow had frozen.

INCA TRAIL & THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

Avery good trip.Should have flown out at least a day earlier to avoid arriving at Lima hotel at 1am and then setting off again at 5am! Would have liked time to visit clay lick while in amazon.

Most Inspirational Moment

First sight of Machu PichuFlora and fauna on Inca trail

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very good

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go a day early

MARRAKECH & THE SAHARA

The trip was a good mix of sand, hills and town!  We got to see lots of ‘real’ local life and felt quite remote but arriving in the ‘city’ was a bit of a shock to the system after all that peace and quiet!

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably seeing people still relying on donkeys for work and washing clothes in the the stream - humblimg to realise how much we have that we probably don't need.  Mind you, getting a better mobile signal in the Sahara than I do at home was also quite up there!

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very good. He made sure he spent time with each member of the group each day and made sure all needs and fitness levels were catered for and felt inclusive.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book a few days more in Marrakech - the time we had on this trip wasn't long enough. Also, change your money back before you go through passport control. THere are no money exchanges once you are in the waiting area and the airport shops only take Euro.....

Suggestions

Really enjoyable for a weeks trip, would recommend it.

PETRA & WADI RUM BY BIKE

This is a fabulous way to see Jordan since it’s such a small country and you can drive through it in a matter of days. I never imagined desert scenery could be so spectacular!

Most Inspirational Moment

On foot, it was coming to the end of the siqq to see the sun beaming through and the Treasury on the other side; it was a truly Indiana Jones moment! On the bike, it was the huge descent from Mount Nebo toward the Dead Sea, breaking around each hairpin and flying at about 30 mph on the straightaways. Both were awesome!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowlegeable guide and great cyclist. He made sure that the most fit got a great workout and the least fit enjoyed the cycling at their own pace. He never made anyone feel out of place, regardless of their ability.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Drink loads of water! I never had any pain or soreness because I drank a good 3 litres a day. And I'm not much of a cyclist.

CLASSIC KENYA SAFARI

A very well organised safari which matched the description in the pre-travel notes. Excellent guides.

Most Inspirational Moment

My first sight of the Rift Valley was jaw-dropping, followed later on by a walk with the best wildlife guide I've ever walked with (Joseph - Lake Elementaita Lodge).Sunset on The Mara was beautiful, a magical experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledgeable and professional.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the excellent travel notes prior to booking so you know what to expect. Unlike some other companies, Exodus aren't afraid to put in the not so pleasant parts of the trip, eg 3 hours on dirt roads, so you really do understand the itinerary.

Suggestions

Wish I'd chosen Exodus before now!

EVEREST BASE CAMP

A simply incredible experience that I will never forget! The trek was well organized and yet relaxed, allowing me to fully soak up one of the most stunning places on the planet…Exodus are the right people to go with… their years of experience in the Himalaya are priceless, the Sherpas they employ are amazing and the lodges they choose to stay in really make the trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

There are so many… The mountains you see are indescribably beautiful, the Sherpa people are some of the warmest and friendliest I’ve ever met and there were so many amazing places… Tengboche being perhaps the most visually stunning!Reaching Base Camp and Kala Pattar felt amazing and it was only thanks to the great Leadership of the Sherpas that this was possible.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ngima Gellzen Sherpa was fun, caring and extremely well organized. He got everything spot on throughout the 3 weeks that he looked after us. I cannot speak highly enough of him! Also to have such an experienced guide like Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, who has climbed 3 of the 8,000+ metre peaks already at only 26 years old, was a real bonus!Mustn’t forget Gyalzen Tammang, our Yak man from Lukla. He too worked very hard throughout the trek and looked after our gear really well!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Whatever you do, read every review on the Exodus Web site, Study the Trip notes like you’re taking an exam and read at least one guide book on Himalayan Trekking. Find the time to do all this and you will have the right kit, the right routine and the right frame of mind to fully enjoy your trek. If you don’t you can end up with the wrong expectations of what you will experience, not to mention some illnesses that can really change the whole trip for you! You don’t have to be fit to do this trek, but it makes a massive difference to how much you get to enjoy it. It is however essential to listen to every piece of advice a Sherpa gives you! They know what they’re doing and do make your well being their absolute priority.

Suggestions

This trek is unforgettable… I am so glad I did it! I would recommend the trek and Exodus to anyone!I can also highly recommend going to the Himalaya the first 2 weeks of December. The skies are generally crystal clear at that time, which makes a massive difference to view on the flight in to Lukla and has left me with a collection of incredible photos from the entire trek. You do have to be prepared to cope with the extremely cold nights though, which with the right gear and an open mind is fine for anyone to deal with.

CORSICAN MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES

Corsoca is a beautiful island with superb scenery , well organised , well led holday , weather was very good. The group worked well , supportive of people of different speeds of walking , some fun characters & good stories.

Most Inspirational Moment

Several times we walked from the woodland into high open areas with superb views. My wife & I and I are keen to do the GR20 at some stage.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledgable of the routes - never any doubt. He led at an appropriate speed for all and knew about local history , flora & fauna. He was flexible e.g. the train service on Corsica is a variable feast & he was able to adapt to alternatives  when appropriate.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Corsica isn't high on awareness as a destination , but well worth a trip. Good beaches on the day off walking , but would bother with the bus tour of Ajaccio.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

So………having took the plunge and booked the last two remaining places on the Kilimanjaro treck, we were obviously a little nervous at the shear thought and magnitude of what we had just done, particularly as we’d never walked or climbed any large hill never mind a mountain! So to cut a long story short, we walked three mini mountains in the UK during the 8 month run up to our adventure. These constituted Scaffell Pike in the Lake District, Kinder Scout in the Peak District and Snowdon in Wales. The biggest of these being Snowdon at just over 3500 feet high, which paled in comparison to Kili at over 19,000 feet!  Needless to say these walks along with some stamina work at the gym twice a week enabled us to reach the summit of the worlds highest free standing mountain, meet some amazing new friends and bring back some awesome memories and an experience that will live with us forever.  We must also add that Exodus provided a service that we can only describe as excellent right from the booking staff in the UK through to the guides on the mountain itself.  What are you wainting for?? Take the plunge!! Lee & Abi Shaw (Rongai Route October 2010)

Most Inspirational Moment

Wow, there were many, but a few that stand out are;when our group were feeling the effects of altitude sickness and fatigue at the end of day 2. We all helped each other through with immense support and team bonding.  The other being when Abi my Wife unexpectedly beat everyone to Gilimans point and then said come on let's get to that true summit...lets nail Uhuru Peak! This after being one of the team that suffered badly with altitude sickness during the previous few days. Finally; to reach Uhuru Peak and see the curvature of the glorious blue skies, the clouds below us and the warm sun shining down on Africa and our beautiful planet.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was called Abraham, he was knowledgeable, inspirational, great support and a very good leader. With his help, 12 out of 12 people in our group reached Gillimans Point and 11 out of 12 went on to reach Uhuru Peak.  I think these results say all we need to say about the leadership qualities of this highly regarded man.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't go overboard with a fitness regime.  You're not running a marathon, rowing in a boat race or swimming the English channel.  You're walking and walking very slowly at that.  The best thing you can do is simply walk long distance and up a few steep hills with a loaded rucksack on your back. Try to do this every weekend or every other weekend combined with two evenings in the week doing 30 to 45 minutes cardio excercise.Walk slowly and try to drink 5 to 6 litres of water per day. Yes you might not be thirsty and you will be needing to urinate every hour or so, but trust me this is the best way to avoid altitude sickness. The ones who suffered in our group were the ones not taking enough water on board.  Also try to eat well, all the necessary foods are provided, but take a few snacks such as nuts and dried fruit to eat during your walks. Equipment:  This is very important, if you go without the proper equipment you will fail.A good water proof Gortex jacket is a must - Try Berghauss or similar (Spend approx £ 100 or more on a good one)Boots - Good worn in boots are critical to your success. Make sure they are very comfortable and supportive around the ankles, it is crucial that new boots are worn in (weekly useage a minimum of 4 months before you go) I bought a pair of Meindl Burma Pro MFS - £ 170 and these were exceptionally comfy, warm and dry thorughout the treck.Layers: Take wicking material (don't forget a good thermal layer trousers and long johns - Trust me you'll need them at night time and for the higher altitude walking days)Rucksack: a 30 to 35 litre capacity with H20 bladder capability is a must. It is important to go and try a few on, don't buy what looks good, it must feel good!! You don't want back ache, pulled muscles or strap burns before you attempt the summit. I can highly reccomend Osprey rucksacks - They manufacture some of the most comfortable and light sacs available. Mine is an Osprey Kestrel 35 litre with airscape and adjustable back setting and it's fantastic. Don't bother with the air mesh sytems that sit off your back by an inch or more, they don't work on these distances and only make your back ache. It is more important to have the rucksack against your back, not sitting off it!  Your back will carry weight all day if you carry it properly against your back.   A good down jacket is very warm at camp, but these can cost anywhere between £ 80 and £ 350. RAB jackets are the high end ones. I bought a RAB summit jacket at a reduced price of £ 90 from the RAB factory shop near Derby - It is so warm it's like a furnace! Finally listen to your guides! They know best.

Suggestions

Our group was a mixture of young twenty somethings up to 60 somethings. a 50/50 split of males and females, British and Canadians. We all got along amazingly well! Canadians and British normally makes for a good friendly cocktail.
