Well & truly worth the views

Loved my week in Morocco & up in the Atlas Mountains. Hassan, our guide, was exceptional. It was hard work & you definitely need to be fairly fit. But for all those days walking up & down, the views were worth it, especially in winter.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Perfect. Hassan was incredibly knowledgable having grown up in the mountains. He kept us entertained, was up for a laugh and never gave up on me. It was a hard slog. Him and Mohammed were just great. Exodus are very lucky to have such people working with them.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is demanding. You need to be fit. Walking uphill for prolonged periods was hard. Don't think you can wing it!

Discover Costa Rica

A holiday of contrasts. This trip takes you from the Caribbean to the Pacific and back. This was a bird spotting trip of a lifetime. In total between us we spotted 180 birds including the elusive quetzal. We walked in rain forests, we floated on waterways and mango swamps and we sped through delightful mountains. We woke up to the sounds of howler monkeys and bird song and we went to sleep to the chink chink of the frogs.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sitting watching the humming birds in front of our lodge. Saying hi to the agouti mundi in our garden. Zip wiring over the rain forest canopy. Trekking to the second waterfall. Swimming in the hot springs at night during a thunder storm.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Gustavo was so enthusiastic about the birds. He worked hard to ensure we spotted as many as possible. He also made sure that the expectations of the non-birders were met by balancing birding with cultural and social information. Our driver Orlando was also great, he kept the bus immaculate, and was always at the door to lend a hand out and he did his fair share of bird spotting too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes, take waterproofs and if possible waterproof luggage because it does rain and walking boots. Make sure you book your seats on the plane. Try to avoid travelling via United States airports , the immigration process and security is confusing and takes a couple of hours. So unnecessary for people in transit.

Great walking holiday

Fantastic week’s break in southern Spain; well organised; strong walking in ideal temperatures. Just what we were looking for.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose is an excellent leader. His enthusiasm for and knowledge of the area was inspiring. His attention to detail as particularly memorable especially in the sandwich that he provided for our lunch often eaten on high mountain ridges.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get reasonable fit and bring walking poles.

Fun and Enjoyable

This was my fourth exodus cycling trip and the ‘routine’ was the same, across different countries. I’m impressed by the way Exodus find the excellent leaders and support staff. The bikes do the job, but don’t expect perfection – even so I wouldn’t contemplate bringing my own bike. The cycling is easyish for the fit and challenging (but doable) for others given the heat, especially. The main hill with all its bends I would equate to Alpe d’Huez. Some had to hop on the bus – but don’t let that put you off.

India and its traffic is unique and not for the nervous rider, but ride in a straight line and follow the cyclist in front and be aware and you will come to enjoy the manic experience. But there were lots of byways and some great views over the mountains at times.

We had some excellent food,much better than on the Rajistahn (don’t let me put you off) trip and in some ‘interesting’ local roadside eateries. Eat before inspecting the kitchens is my advice! I came to no harm.

Most Inspirational Moment

India (and Sri Lanka) is/are so different to the West and I can't believe that people wouldn't be inspired by this amazing country. Most of the people don't have what we have, yet they are charming, excited, genuinely pleased to see you. It is embarrassing to appear to have so much when compared to their simpler lives (I hope I'm not being patronising). Being able to cycle from coast to coast is amazing and to experience the contrast between east and west India. A real highlight was the overnight trip/stay on a boat in the Backwaters. A time to chill.

Thoughts on Group Leader

As always the guides, leader, assistants, mechanics, water bottle fillers and driver etc were magnificent (all 4 of them). How they cope with us daft europeans only they can say!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Things don't always runs smoothly. Chill out. Go with the flow. Enjoy. Previous reports had said you couldn't always get a beer at the end of the day dues to laws/culture. Our leader had it all sorted and clearly we had a few 'alcoholics' on this trip judging by all the bottles loaded on the bus. This trip could have been named the 'Kingfisher' tour due to the numbers of these birds we saw in kerela and the number of bottles of this wonderful Indian lager that were used to rehydrate!

Something very different in Morocco!

3.5 days of trekking in the high Atlas and a wonderful tour in Marrakech. Day one is just a hike to the refuge (simple), then in the afternoon we opted to practice our crampon and ice axing. A long day, but not terribly physically challenging. The second day was Toubkal and was a little more physically challenging as it’s an early start and the altitude starts to kick in. Also, some of the ways to get down from the summit were a little difficult to manage. The third day was the most difficult from a technical perspective. Not quite as physically challenging as Toubkal, but lots of crampons, ice axes and harrowing climbs/descents. The final day is a walk back to your departure point for Marrakech. The tour of Marrakech was amazing and I learned more than I’ve ever known about Islam and Islamic history. Totally fascinating!

Most Inspirational Moment

The teamwork and guide support was inspirational. There's also something about looking across miles and miles of mountains to the Sahara that's inspiring as well!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan and Muhammed were both fantastic, supportive, and quite understanding when things got a little (okay, that's an understatement) difficult and emotional.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be ready for a challenge, but it's definitely all worth it when you're able to look back and say "wow, I did that!" ...and there are a ton of hilarious stories...

Cycle Namibia

This is a well organised and diverse trip. Good cycling, great and varied topography and wonderful wildlife. This is just such a good way to see a good cross section of Namibia. The campsites were terrific set in some wonderful locations and to get swimming pools in some of them is a real bonus.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were two great moments for me. Climbing the giant sand dune for sunrise was brilliant. The colours and shapes and shadows are awesome. The camp site in the Etosha NP was great but watching the wildlife at the water hole late into the evening was pure theatre.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sven and his team were brilliant. So flexible and attentive. They worked so hard to make this trip a success for each of us in the group and the food in camp was terrific. How they manage to produce such great food is beyond me. Fantastic.

Advice for Potential Travellers

In November, be prepared for high day time temperatures. By noon temperatures were reaching close to 40C and Sven, our guide, quite rightly would end our rides by then each day. So do not expect to ride all day. There are also some lengthy transfers but these are needed to ensure we saw as much of the country as possible. We used these to catch up on sleep after early starts. Don't expect to see many village people. The cycling and transfer routes do not really take you through many villages.

Annapurna Sanctuary trek code TNS 151107

This is a wonderful trek with beautiful and varied scenery and a good length- neither too short nor too long. We were fortunate in having good weather, a group that gelled really well and an excellent leader.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Gele Bishokarma, was excellent. He ensured that everyone was looked after and that everything ran smoothly. We felt we could have complete confidence in him which helped us in turn relax and enjoy the trek to the full. His team ( assistant guides and porters ) were also really helpful and friendly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

While the trek is within the capabilities of most people it helps to be fit to enjoy it. Probably the most important bit of kit is your boots. Make sure they are well worn in and not too tight bearing in mind there is as much downhill as up.

Cycle Kerala and Tropical India - The best Guides and support driver anywhere

Our Exodus staff were amazing. They took care of us so well, knew the best and quietest routes, stopped for tea and snacks at just the right moment. They took great care of our bicycles too.

I enjoyed being able to see a part of India from a bicycle instead of a car or bus. the tour took us from an interior city to a beach town on the Arabian Sea. We cycled up a long and high hill to Ooty and the next day down 2000 metres on a winding road through beautiful tea plantations. LAter we cycled along the coast. the houseboat trip was lovely and super relaxing.

Most Inspirational Moment

MANY GREAT MOMENTS:. Making it up the hill to Ooty, when a young boy stopped to pick up and return my water bottle which had fallen on the road, when children said hello to us as we rode by, when families asked us to pose with them for photos, meeting great local people, and yummy food, seeing tea plantations, and the Arabian Sea, swimming in the warm sea at sunset, meeting the others on the tour - the most humorous group I have ever met.

He was excellent. thoughtful and considerate and knowledgeable, and calm and great to be with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for crazy traffic in the cities and large towns and go your own comfortable speed.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to say with so much to choose from but Turtles hatching and making their first precarious journey to the sea at Tortuguero was a reassuringly rewarding sight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Antonio was excellent. His willingness to reveal his comprehensive ecological knowledge was more than we might have expected. Although he must have lead many groups along the same path, his infectious enthusiasm was undimmed and happily shared. He enjoyed a good relationship with the group who responded to his clear advice and instructions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack frugally and pack your first days riding clothing in your hand luggage as it is not uncommon for hold luggage to go astray for a while. Not the fault of Exodus.
