    Fascinating and fun week away

This was our first visit to the southern French/Spanish border area which has a history of conflict over centuries. We stayed in good hotels in quiet, picturesque coastal towns and had lovely walks with views over hillsides, vineyards and the coast. The group was small and sociable and the food and drink excellent.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The highlight for me was visiting Pla de Tudela where Salvador Dali painted the surreal rock formations.

What did you think of your group leader?

Our French guide Kevin was calm, friendly and well organised. He was very considerate and helpful, gave us lots of background information on our visits, recommended excellent restaurants and was very good company.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

You need a range of lightweight clothing; we had a couple of heavy downpours (luckily not while walking!) and some fairly hot sunshine when walking in the open. Good walking shoes/light boots are essential for the rough paths. A sit mat came in useful too!

    Fantastic trip!

Great trip to a less visited part of Spain anf then to France. Catalunya is wonderful - green mountains, rocky coast, vineyards and pretty towns, good food and wine. Our French guide Kevin looked after us very well and made the trip special!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Walks in Cap de Creus (landscape that inspired Salvador Dali ) and French vineyards and rocky coast

What did you think of your group leader?

Kevin was the best tour guide ever - looked after us so well , he even brought hot water, coffee, tea and biscuits for our breaks. Very knowledgeable, kind and good fun.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Bring good walking boots and be prepared for all weathers. And mosquito repellent. We were incredibly lucky with our weather but it does rain at times.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It would perhaps be nice to spend a bit more time in Cadaqués. Could Exodus please organise more guided trips to Spanish Catalunya , to the area south of Port de la Selva ? The other trips are mainly self guided and it would be great to see more of this region.

    Walking French & Spanish Catalonia

A wonderful first run walking trip in the Catalan area! The tour group of 6 met in Port de la Selva, Spain a fishing village along the Mediterranean Sea. Our leader, Kevin, led us out in various routes along the coast and in the national parks, viewing unique geological formations & spring plant growth with wild flowers all along the way! After 2 full days of walking from the village we left Spain, hated to leave our friendly little hotel, via car and drove across the French border through vineyards and beautiful landscape. One of my favorite days! After entering France we parked the car (picked up later by Kevin) and walked through the countryside, vineyards, hills, and through an ancient fort. There was a beautiful view down into Collioure as we followed a rocky pathway down into the town! The next day, Thursday, was our free day to explore the area. It was fun to wander around the town and back up to the fort. Collioure is full of little shops and restaurants, plus a helpful Information center. On Friday we took the train, just around the corner from our hotel, on a quick ride to Port Vendres, nearby active commercial port. We were glad to have our trekking poles on the up and down paths along the coast (I actually used them on most days!) It was a great day and marvelous views of the Mediterranean. The last day we went by train over to a beachfront town, interesting to compare with other beaches we have seen. We had a fun afternoon with an impromptu winery visit, crossing a babbling brook, and climbing our way out of the beach along the coast. The last night was a special tapas evening in a local quaint restaurant on a winding artsy little lane. We were sorry when it was over! The two of us set out by bus, taxi, then train back to Barcelona for a few days before heading home!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

One of my favorite days was the day that we crossed from Spain into France and had a great walk through the countryside, then down into Collioure. The other favorite was the day, Friday, we left Collioure via train to Port Vendres and followed the coastal path. It was a beautiful day!

What did you think of your group leader?

Kevin was a terrific leader! He had learned the routes and highlights every day. Amazing because we were the first run of this tour! Kevin was really good at pointing out botanical and geological features, and especially the rocks and gullies along the way that gave us a caution. He was excellent at anticipating any problems we might have! In addition, Kevin was great in guiding us and had a pleasant manner with all our questions.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Great trip for early spring! Take trekking poles if you normally use them. Along with sunscreen, hats, varied hiking clothing, comfortable shoes or hiking boots. Try all the local food and enjoy the surrounding environment. Learn a few words in Spanish, Catalan language, and French that will help communication and smile when you try to pronounce them! Everyone was super friendly! Barcelona is just a few hours away! If you choose to go or return that way.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Really a great trip! I would like to do it again!
