A breath-taking week in the Tuscan mountains

I attended a ‘challenging week’ this September, along with 13 other like-minded, energetic walkers! The walks, arguably the most important part of a walking trip, were very varied with some woodland, some high ridge ways, some scrambles etc, all of which were breath-taking. The days were fairly long – we were generally walking for 6-7 hours daily – but the variety and beauty of the scenery meant I was sad to end each day! The accommodation is fairly simple but the owners are extremely friendly (and very good cooks!). The company was also great; our group got on really well and I couldn’t have asked for a more caring, knowledgeable, experienced guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational moment for me was standing on one of the mountain peaks, at over 2,000 metres (definitely earned lunch!), and having absolutely beautiful views every direction I turned, without other walkers, cars or houses anywhere in sight. There wasn't anywhere else I wanted to be in the world, except in that moment on the mountain top.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader, Sara Bull, was fantastic. She went out of her way to ensure we all enjoyed the trip, whether this meant adapting the walk depending on weather, lending out her spare gear and keeping up our pecker with a constant biscuit supply! Sara is extremely knowledgeable about the region so has a plethora of suitable walking routes which can be chosen on the day to suit the weather conditions and the needs of the group. She also has a great sense of humour so you will be kept well-entertained. Make sure you ask her about a certain blue face mask!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This was a 'challenging week' and lived up to this grade. Although it suited me perfectly, make sure you are prepared for long days of walking, some scrambling and a far amount of ascent. Don't be fooled into thinking you will be rambling around little farms and vineyards, as I had imagined a holiday in Tuscany may offer - this holiday far outdoes this expectation but take it from me, big mountains are involved! Make sure you take all your gear; some days we wore shorts and t-shirts yet others we needed several layers, hat, gloves etc. Lastly, pack your swim wear! The outdoor pool may be on the chilly side in Autumn but it is very refreshing after a day of walking.

Great holiday in the Dolomites

This is a really lovely trip offering walks of different grades in the stunning landscape of the Dolomites. Throw in a cosy hotel, good food, a few cold beers, and a group of like-minded companions and you really have a fantastic holiday for anyone with a decent level of fitness.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking along a ridge on a sunny day with nothing to worry about except what I would have for my lunch!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric and Emily were fantastic. They really did their utmost to make sure we all had a wonderful experience and it worked!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are reasonably fit because you will enjoy it all the more if you are.

Beautiful Coastline

A very good tour for someone who can walk a bit, doesn’t mind steps and appreciates this stay at a hotel in a quiet village above Amalfi.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walk of the gods was fun and exhillerating. We walked about 5 hours from the hotel all the way to the bottom of the steps at Positano. Couldn't think of a better way to justify a gelato at the end.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo was punctual, knowledgeable and hard working. Not only is he the village tour guide (he lives there) but he's the village taxi driver and overall entrepreneur. He is the Del Boy of Agerola.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are many stairs. You are staying at top of a cliff. Everywhere is down. Steps are the norm. There are extra expenses not included in trip notes, such as extra guides, tour buses and entrance fees. We used an extra 50 Euros each which did not include the spare day when we went to Pompei. Bring plenty of room for food. You normally get a 2 hour restaurant stop at lunchtime and there is an excellent 3 or 4 course meal waiting at the hotel too.

montenegro, bosnia and herzegovina

I have been on several of your trips, but this one rates as one of the best. Anaid our guide was very knowledgeable and gave an unbiased account of the homelands war which was extremely interesting and made me want to learn more about the Balkans, so already looking in the brochure for next year.

Most Inspirational Moment

The way Anaid our guide brought the history alive in conjunction with visiting the museums made me feel that I could understood what the people experienced.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was extremely knowledgeable on the history of the countries. In addition he ensured everyone was okay and that he genuinely wanted us to enjoy our trip

Advice for Potential Travellers

Start reading the Cellist of Sarajevo before you go and finish it while you are there

Excellent tour of China's major sites (ACE)

This tour was very comprehensive, taking in many of China’s top sites. This does mean alot of travelling between points but what you see definitely makes up for that. The hightlight for me in Beijing was the Great Wall appearing on a steep ridge. Onto Xian the scale and individual details of the Terracotta Warriers amazed everyone. Seeing the Giant Panda’s so close and active by being first visitors of the day was brilliant. This is busy trip with optional shows in the evenings and stunning Yangshou a chance to improve your Cooking, Cycling and Calligraphy skills!

Most Inspirational Moment

Crusing down the Yangtse surrounded by mighty cliffs, the excursion on smaller boats up the side gorges ending up being rowed in wooden boats was an adventure

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chris (Christened Panda by the group) was fantastic with 15 years experience she made the sometimes complex journey on trip smooth

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring a robust cup for overnight trains (there are 3) and a wheeled case as China's stations are big and in the centre of cities often a trek to the bus. If your a big city fan think of booking additional sites in Shanghai to relax after the trip.

Fantastic trip

A fantastic group walking holiday in the scenic South of France exploring hidden gems in the countryside. Our guide, Stephanie was absolutely great, organising us and looking after the well being of everyone. Menton was a good choice for base as it was a vibrant and pretty town, with a good beach (though stony), many shops and restaurants along with an interesting museum.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip combined local walking with using the areas transport system. It was lovely to explore on the local buses and trains and visit medieval villages in the hillsides. Having group lunches together overlooking a fantastic view of the riviera or a small hidden village was wonderful. Good team spirit in the group resulting in very chatty and lively group dinners.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Stephanie was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. She welcomed us with a smile and was friendly and encouraging to all throughout the trip. Her organisational skills were superb and she was keen to give choices on the walks if some of the group wanted to visit a particular location. Stephanie was very knowledgeable about the area and always willing to answer questions and give advice.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There was quite a lot of downhill walking, so worth practising if you don't like going downhill.

Cycling in Croatia

An excellent holiday. A fantastic group, and an excellent group leader and driver. A beautiful country and excellent intinerary. We had a good mix of challenging and more enjoyable rides. A well organised trips the only thing that really let it down were the flights – they were indirect with short connection times, and the flight home left at 6.25 in the morning – not a great end to an otherwise excellent trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Exploring the various islands and taking in the beautiful scenery from the bike was very inspiring - I will definitely return to Croatia.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader, Vladimir, was very good. We enjoyed his company, he was good fun, very organised and very knowlegeable. He was also very calm and reassuring in a couple of difficult moments. The only disappointment was on day two when several of us had to take the support bus instead of completing the ride as we ran into some time pressures. We would have preferred to have started the ride an hour earlier so we could have finished it comfortably.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The brouchure suggests you need a good level of fitness but not so much experience on a bike. However, I think some level of bike experience is desirable. Most of the rides were on road or track but we had a couple of short off road sections, plus the first two days had quite challenging hills. I'd also suggest all travellers bring their passports, E111 cards and insurance details with them at all times. Sadly we had a couple of injuries that were more difficult to resolve as the individuals were not carrying these items with them at the time. I'd also recommend cyclists ensure they have snacks to bring with them on the bike as some days we went quite long distances before a lunch break.

4 Wheel Drive Desert Explorer

This was a fantastic holiday with a real wilderness feel. We camped in some stunning locations miles away from any other people and the scenery and wildlife were incredible.

Most Inspirational Moment

Wild camping out in the middle of nowhere where the stars lit up the night sky and there were no other humans for miles around. Watching a huge herd of elephant bathing and playing in the waterhole. Finding a family of desrt elephants and wathcing the eat and play.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hans was incredibly well organised. He lead the team well and the way they set up the camp each night and the amazing food that they created over the camp fires made the holiday experience exceptional. Mathias was the guid in my vehicle and he had eagle eyes for spotting the wildlife, he was very knowledgeable about all things Namibia; there were no questions he couldn't answer and he had a great sense of humour so there were lots of laughs on the long drives.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for all extremes of temperatures, we had some very cold nights but also some warmer evenings and some hot days.

Highlights of the Dolomites

This was a most outstanding trip, with excellent walks of grade 5. The scenery was magical, the Dolomites being very different to many mountain ranges I have previously walked in. The transport of both buses and ski lifts to the start points worked perfectly. It is an area I would highly recommend for its history and breathtaking ups and downs!

Most Inspirational Moment

All the walks exceeded my expectations, including the scrambles and climbs.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Emily and Eric were brilliant and looked after us well, chosing the walks to fit the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Have no hesitation to book but come out fit, you'll enjoy the walking all the more.
