CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

MY wife and I have different  levels of skill and this two grade holiday was perfect for us.  I was able to get very good coaching on basic skills and increase my confidence as we went on treks each day while my wife was able to explore more demanding routes. We could compare experiences and bruises in the evening .

Most Inspirational Moment

Dobbiaco is a beautiful location. We had perfect weather, warm clear sky and wonderful views of the mountains. Cross country skiing, in my view, is not just about technique and speed but about exploring the countryside in winter. Each say was dfferent, frozen lakes, secluded valleys, open meadows and always the magestic dolomites to take your breath away, ( what was left of it anyway).  My greatest thrill was skiing down a long open meadow and being in complete control of my skis, my speed and having time to look down the beautiful valley as it openned out below me. I knew then that I could ski cross country. The enjoyable aspect of Dobbiaco is that you are never far from a lodge or refuge that serves wonderful hot chocolate, apple struddle and a host of other things to keep you weight on the snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

There were two leaders for each of the groups. My leader was David Davis. He was a very good coach. He made learning fun and encouraged each slight improvement. The group was diverse in age and in expectations of the holiday and he managed this extremely well. There were always options to have a shorter day and a bigger lunch. On a number of occassions he skied wth me a gave me very practical tips which actually worked. Both he and Albert the second leader  ensured that we got the most out of our holiday as well as having fun in the evening.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Dobbiaco is a a great location for all grades of cross country skiing . I have expereince of these holidays in Aaustria, France and Sweden and for me this was the right place to learn and to become more confident and competant. There is a great vaiety of terrain around Dobbiaco as a many convenient stops for your creature comforts. The rail and bus services are excellent and so having a shorter day if you become tired is always an option. The hotel is warm and friendly but watch out fot the five courses at dinner.

Suggestions

A big thank you to Albert and David who made skiing challenging and fun and the holiday a great experience.

SPICE TRAILS OF KERALA

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip and it definitely ticked all the boxes. I discovered that Exodus has changed a lot since my last trip 23 years ago (!). I was pleasantly surprised by how soft camping has become (chairs!?!) and struck how old the group were. Having said that, age is just a number. Our group was without exception fit and good fun. I worked out that when not camping I would rather stay in a boutique hotel, but one can always pick on detail.

Most Inspirational Moment

1 Getting through the trecking without injury or blisters2 The craic round the campfire3 Chillling in style on the houseboat

Thoughts on Group Leader

I was initally sceptical as he did not walk with us and seemed quite remote from us. However as the trip wore on and I had discovered a complete inability to order and receive a cup of tea within two hours (delivered to me at my table - not someone else's bedroom!), I realised he was nothing short of a miracle worker in getting buses, hotels, porters etc to perform correctly and on time. Respect!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it!

KENYA & TANZANIA ADVENTURE

A truly wonderful experience.  this is my second Exodus holiday and they have both been excellent

Most Inspirational Moment

The Hot air Baloon ride over the Serengetti. (thoroughly recommended)   Seeing all those beautiful animals in their natural habitat

Thoughts on Group Leader

Linda was a tough lady, very good at sorting out problems.  An excellent driver

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a really good camera if you can and a three season sleeping bag.  If was pretty cold some nights

Suggestions

Its a bit tough packing up your tents in the dark at 4.30 a.m. but well worth it.   Boarding the shuttle ferry for the ferry to Zanzibar was horrendus, I felt I miight be crushed to death at one point.  However I loved the holiday and the food while camping was excellent.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

Good leaders who provided very enjoyable days skiing in wonderful scenery.  The accomodation was of a good standard, the food and service good although the heating was a bit over the top initially. We were dealing with an unexpected family bereavement and the trip helped us cope.

Most Inspirational Moment

The last few kilometers, when I finally managed to skate for significant distances without falling over!  In scenery terms, every day was outstanding.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both Albert and David were excellent.  Considerate of peoples' capabilities they took everyone on great outings.  They were very knowledgeable of the locality and providied excellent information.  They both contributed to a most enjoyable and sociable week.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Consider travelling by rail or take your own food for the flight.

Suggestions

I really enjoyed the region, not having been to the Dolomites before.  Would be tempted to combine X-country and Downhill skiing another time.

DISCOVER COSTA RICA

I was a little worried about the trip as I was travelling alone but this was totally unnecessary as it was a truly great group of people.  This trip was everything I hoped it would be and more.  From day one our brilliant guide and driver did everything possible to ensure that we got the most out of the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Impossible to restrict to one moment - seeing jaguars swimming the canal in front of our boat, spending over an hour watching the elusive male quetzal, seeing a tree full of scarlet macaw, being entertained by primary school children (a first for the school), visiting an organic farm and enjoying fruits of the farm for lunch (including a glass of local rum) ...........................

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rafael was abosultely fantastic.  He has a really good sense of humour and had excellent interaction with both the members of our group and our bus driver/boat driver.  He is passionate about Costa Rica - its history, culture, nature etc and is very keen to pass this on to the group.  His knowledge about birds and plants was excellent and he was a great spotter.  He even managed to add a few little extras to the trip to give us a more comprehensive feel for the country.  Our driver Francisco was also amazing - also a very good bird/animal spotter and also interacted very well with the group (family as he called us).

Advice for Potential Travellers

The temperature at night in Savegre is quite cool so make sure you have some warmer clothing.  Washing and drying clothese was relatively easy so no need to over-burden the suitcase.  Have plenty of memory for the camera you'll be taking a lot of photos!

Suggestions

If you love birds then this is the holiday for you.  But it is more than that - there are animals in abundance, exotic plants, culture, history, coffee production, swimming and more.

CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

This part of South Africa is definitely the right place to go on this type of tour. Relaxed and quality experience. Out of this world beautiful sceneries, stunning coastal routes… To my taste, the weather is just right for this physically quite demanding experience: not too hot and not humid.

Most Inspirational Moment

Breathtaking downhills.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Peter is a really fantastic, amazing and one of a kind tour leader! He is very professional and organizing, resourceful and very patient, attentive to every detail, goes extra mile to take care of you. Could not be better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do not forget to take with you all the proper gear: gloves, gel saddle, cycle shorts etc are essential for long cycling days. Sport drinks contributed to my performance on last days :-).

Suggestions

Just go on this trip, this going to be an experience of your life time!

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

Just arrived home from an amazing trip. We were impressed with Exodus throughout the whole experience.
‘The African walking company’ who took care of us on the treck were incredible, from the porters, cooks and guides they were 1st class. Simply awesome!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro was a truly emotional experience that will stay with me forever.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The head guide of 'the African walking company' was an Inspirational man, and a true leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's tough but with the right physical and mental attitude is achievable by most. Read as much information as possible before you leave home, especially regarding the correct clothing and equipment. Listen and learn from your guide & assistant guides.

Suggestions

I would definitely recommend Exodus for your next adventure. I certainly hope I'll be travelling with them again.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: KVITAVATN

Back for another year of Kvitavatn magic and yes it just gets better. It is an infectious place, keeps pulling you back.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ilse and Mary are the greatest team, they are both a pleasure to ski with. Teaching is gold star standard.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just go, you will not be dissapointed.

ANTARCTIC CIRCLE QUEST

The journey to and from Ushuaia was long and tedious but when we got on the boat things improved immediately.  The journey across Drakes Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula was a bit rough and I was sick until the Doctor gave me some very good pills. Once there it was calm.  we started at King George Island and went south, calling at various Islands as we went.  There was floating Ice and Icebergs everywhere.Everything was black(rock) or white (Ice). We saw nothing green after leaving King George. The only other colour was a bit of yellow (lichen) and some red stain on the snow.  The scenery was everywhere spectacular. Ice Cliffs with blocks breaking off and black rock precipices.  There were a few rocky beaches and one black sand beach.  We were loaned Wellington Boots and given a heavy, warm waterproof jacket for use on the zodiacs and on land.  In antarctica they were very useful and necessary but I don't think it will ever be cold enough in Enland for me to wear it again. There were penguins everywhere.  we landed at one colony and I have never seen so many creatures of one species together at the same time.  They smelled awful.. We crossed the antarctic circle and tried to land at one of the scientific bases but it was too rough. We went back north and paused in Paradise Harbour. Here it was fantastically smooth and peacefull. We saw an occasional Whale and some of the party went on a zodiac cruise to where there were some spectacular grounded icebergs. There were also seals and lots of birdsWe landed at one scientific station and I climbed a low cliff and looked into the water. I could see a penguin catching fish under the water.  On land the penguins were clumsy and awkward, under the water they were incredibly quick and active, darting here and there like dragonflies. On the last day we went to Deception Island.  This is a flooded volcanic caldera.  We entered through a very narrow entrance called 'Neptunes Bellows' and  landed just inside the entrance.  Inside the caldera, the water was warmed by volcanic activity and some people went swimming. Sadly, one thing I hadn't brought was a bathing costume. Finally back across Drakes Passage to Ushuaia, much smoother than the way out and we saw Cape HornThe journey back from Ushuaia was awful but that was British Airway's fault not Exodus

Most Inspirational Moment

Deception Island

Thoughts on Group Leader

Woody was marvellous

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring warm waterproof trousers.  One hint that I was given was to bring a clip to attach something colourfull to my pair of boots so that I could spot them amongst lots of similar pairs.

A wonderful holiday, but Spitzbergen gives you much the same scenery and the journey is much easier

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

I didn’t know what to expect when I booked this holiday with a friend … but wow, I can honestly say this has been the best holiday of my entire life (and ive been on quite a few!).  This was an adventure of a lifetime, one that I loved from the moment I arrived.  Ive never had holiday blues so bad before – I want to go back, NOW!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many moments where I stood back and thought 'Wow, life can't get much better than this'.  But one of these moments that I will never forget was during the full day husky trip.  After a couple of kilometres my team of huskies settled into a steady pace (I didnt have to hold on so tight at this point!!), I took a look at the breath taking scenary, breathed in the fresh air (was minus 32 that day!) and thought 'I am truely the luckiest person alive!'.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader(s) I had (Hannah and Ollie) were AMAZING.  Absolutely second to none.  I cannot fault them in anyway.  They worked so incredibly hard, yet made it all look so easy - and constantly made me feel like I was part of their family!  I cannot credit them enough - if there were an award, it should, without a shadow of doubt be awarded to them.  They helped make my adventure truely amazing - I will never forget them or all the new skills they have taught me!

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice would be to take plenty of layers.  The kit provided wasnt warm enough for me, but I took my own gear anyway - so was fine.  I advise 2 pairs of gloves at all times, wool socks (2 pairs at a time) and those hand warmers that you shake and keep your fingers warm for up to 10 hours.  They were worth their weight in gold, because it could get extremely chilly over there during some of the activities.

Suggestions

I can't add anymore, other than this has been the best adventure of my life!  I would love to work there myself it was that much fun!  Thank you Hannah and Ollie, this was a special trip for me and it truely exceeded all of my expectations!
