Are malaria tabets absolutely necessary?

I have been told that at this time of year, if we use good preventative measures - covering up at night and insect repellant - then we don't necessarily need to take malaria tablets, and certainly not for the whole trip. Is this too much of a risk?

Hi there, I know that Cape Town is not a malarial area - I did a trip from Cape Town to Vic Falls last year and only needed to take the tablets for part of the trip.  Am not sure about the rest of the route you are travelling though.  I would visit your GP or a travel clinic and they will check and advise accordingly and if recommended, I personally would take the tablets - I know 2 people who have had malaria in the last 2 years, it's just not worth the risk.
